1 National French Contest, 2009 FLES Division CD Script for Listening Comprehension Part I For the listening comprehension section you are to use listening comprehension picture sheets pages 1-6. For each number, you will hear a statement that refers to one of the pictures marked A, B, or C. You are to identify the picture and fill in the circle of the correct letter on your answer sheet. Use a #2 pencil. This is important with our computer-scored answer sheets. If your teacher has not provided you with a # 2 pencil WITH AN ERASER, this is the time for your teacher to stop the CD and find one for everyone in the class. You will hear each statement two times. Do not fill in the circle on your answer sheet until you have heard the statement repeated the second time. If you wish to change an answer, be sure you completely erase the answer you wish to change. It is very important that all pencil corrections be cleanly erased. Otherwise, the machine may mark your answer as incorrect. Now, look at listening comprehension picture sheet page one. In order to familiarize you with the French voices that you will hear during the contest, I would like to introduce them to you. is the woman s voice ( Bonjour! ) and is the man s voice ( Bonjour! ). We will do one sample, but --désolé there is no place to mark on the answer sheet. Just listen and look at the sample pictures at the top of your picture page. Ready? Here s the sample: Person 1: Le chapeau de Monsieur Robert est noir. Person 2: Le chapeau de Monsieur Robert est noir. You would have filled in the circle with the little C inside of it on your answer sheet, right? FORMIDABLE! You are now ready

2 to begin the contest! Please remember that this is NOT an achievement test, but a contest that is given to students from first through sixth grades. You are NOT expected to know everything you hear. For students in division 1A (grades 1-3), please note that this year you will only do questions The older students, plus all immersion and partial immersion students, will continue for all 30 listening comprehension questions. I will let you know when to stop. Keep in mind also that your teacher is NOT allowed to prompt you or help you in any way during the contest. Think about all the other French students who are doing this today with you and have fun! Look on your answer sheet for number one. Ready? Let s begin. 1. Ma soeur a trois poissons rouges dans son bocal. 2. Mathieu écrit l alphabet, mais il lui manque la lettre P. 3. Mon papa est en bonne forme. Chaque matin il mange des bananes. 4. C est la rentrée et Bernard est bien préparé pour l école. Dans sa trousse il a un crayon. 5. Pauvre Claude! Il a mal aux dents! 6. Sur la corde à linge, Papa a mis deux chaussettes et une chemise. 7. Au printemps, il fait du soleil. 8. Voici mon frère. Il est toujours content.

Monsieur Boutin achète des provisions au supermarché. 12. Marie est une élève très polie. Quand elle veut répondre à une question elle lève sa main. 13. L anniversaire de Jean-Marc est le 13 septembre. 14. Sophie va nous rendre visite en juillet. Elle va arriver en avion. 15. L oiseau est plus petit que le chien. 16. Excusez-moi, mademoiselle. Pouvez-vous m apporter une fourchette, s il vous plaît? 17. Pour la Fête des Pères, je voudrais acheter cette chemise pour mon papa. Elle coûte 40 euros. 18. Titus est un chien adorable. Quand nous ne sommes pas à la maison, il se repose sur le lit. 19. Monsieur Lambert est un bon père. Il joue souvent avec sa fille. 20. Je suis sûr que le client de la voyante est une souris. Cette dame voit, dans sa boule de cristal, quelque chose de délicieux pour une souris.

4 If you are in Division 1A (grades 1-3) then this is the end of the Listening Comprehension Section for you. If you are in an immersion or partial immersion program (divisions 3A and 3B) or in grades 4, 5, or 6, then you will continue. 21. Monsieur Delacroix parle au téléphone. 22. Hourrah! Naturellement, il est midi et demi, c'est l heure du déjeuner. 26. La mère prépare le dîner. Questions 27 and 28 will not use pictures. Each question will be followed by three possible answers preceded by the letters A, B, or C. Only one of the answers will be the correct response to the question. Listen to the question and the three suggested answers. After you have heard each question a second time, fill in the circle of the letter on the answer sheet that corresponds to the correct response. Listen to the following example. DO NOT MARK YOUR ANSWER SHEET just listen! Question: How are you today? A. I am fine. B. It s raining. C. Today is Tuesday.

5 On your answer sheet you would have marked A ( I am fine. ) This was just a sample, so I know you were clever enough not to mark your answer sheet! Following its reading you will hear two questions along with three suggested answers preceded by the letters A, B, or C. As before, fill in the circle corresponding to your choice on the answer sheet. Remember, the paragraph will be read only once, but the questions will be repeated. Bonjour! Je m appelle Marie-Claire. J ai douze ans et j habite à Nice avec ma famille. J ai une grande famille. J ai deux soeurs, Gisèle et Valérie et deux frères Didier et Henri. Nos parents travaillent beaucoup. Ma mère est médecin et travaille à l hôpital. Mon père est journaliste et il voyage partout. Cependant, ma famille et moi, nous nous amusons le weekend. Nous aimons aller
