2 Classroom Approach This class is taught in French. It is based on the use of excerpts from francophone cinema. Communicative contexts and grammatical guides are introduced through a variety of activities. Acquisition is reinforced by interactive use of new structures and vocabulary. Daily Attendance, Thorough Preparation Outside Class, And Participation In Class Are Of The Utmost Importance. Please note that, unless otherwise stipulated, the material listed on your syllabus, should be prepared before coming to class, when possible. The homework will be in bold in the syllabus. Repeated failure to do so will result in a lowered participation and preparation score for those days in question. Evaluation of Work A. Vocabulary I would like to point out that you are expected to learn and review the vocabulary at the end of each chapter. Vocabulary will be an important component of your work since it will be necessary to use the precise and relevant terms in class. Therefore, one or two short vocabulary quizzes will be included in the work for each chapter. B. Here is a breakdown of how you work will be assessed: 1. Participation: 25% 2. Three Chapter Exams 20% 3. Comprehensive Final Exam 20% 4. Preparation (written homework) 15% 5. Quizzes 10% 6. Composition 10% CLASS STANDARDS AND POLICIES Students with Disabilities If you have a disability for which you are or may be requesting an accommodation, you are encouraged to contact both your instructor and the Office of Health and Counseling Services, G-10 Student Union, as early as possible in the term. The Office of Health and Counseling Services will verify your disability and determine reasonable accommodations for this course. 2

3 Attendance You are expected to attend all scheduled class meetings, to be on time for each class or session, to be prepared, and to stay for the entire period; excessive absences or regular absences will lower your final grade. If you are late and/or miss more than three classes for ANY reason other than extenuating circumstances (see below), your final grade average will be lowered by 2 points for every class you miss (up to 10 maximum). If you have a legitimate reason for missing a test, you must provide documentation (of illness, for example), or discuss the reason in advance with me. If you do not show up when we have an exam, your grade will be a zero. The Final Exam will be taken on the assigned day. NO EXCEPTIONS!! You must turn all of your work in on time. Any written assignments not completed on time will be marked off by 10 points a day. There will be no extensions of deadlines except for extenuating circumstances. If you have an emergency, it is your responsibility to convey that information through the Student Affairs Office, which will corroborate the legitimacy of your absence. Students who play sports sponsored by the University may not miss classes to practice or play for their team, since they register before the general population in order to avoid scheduling conflicts. Student athletes whose sport will require that they miss class more than twice during the regular season need to take a different course. While post-season tournament play can t be scheduled in advance, regular season play is prescheduled, and just as students can t register for two courses being taught at the same time, and just as athletes can t play two sports when the games are played at the same time, neither can student athletes deliberately cross-schedule a course that conflicts with the regular season schedule of the sport they play. Student athletes who have to miss class for post-season tournament play must document the necessity of their absence through the Athletic Department and make up all the work they miss; sometime before the next class meeting. Work done poorly on these make-up assignments will not count, and your absence from class will then be counted. Weather Emergencies The University as a whole cancels classes only in the most extreme of weather emergencies; school cancellations are announced on local radio and television stations and on the UPJ Home Page. While the University rarely cancels classes, the Administration does understand that non-residential faculty and students must deal with varied road safety conditions, depending on their commute. If I cannot make it to campus, I will notify the Division Office, and they will post a notice outside our classroom. Communications Technologies All electronic equipment normally used for communication, including but not limited to beepers, pagers, cell phones, iphones, cameras phones, etc., are forbidden for use in this class; all such equipment should be turned off during class. 3

4 Plagiarism and Academic Integrity As stated in the Guidelines on Academic Integrity published by the University of Pittsburgh and effective at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, it is unethical to present as one's own work the ideas, representations, or words of another, or to permit another to present one's own work without customary and proper acknowledgement of sources. You are plagiarizing when you use ideas about something from another source without acknowledging they are not your own.
