The words in bold underlined words are the interrogative expressions or question words. Où est ce que tu habites? Where do you live? J habite à Paris. I live in Paris. À quelle heure est ce que vous mangez? At what time do you eat? Nous mangeons à cinq heures. We eat at 5 o clock. You can ask questions in French using this pattern: INTERROGATIVE EXPRESSION + est ce que + SUBJECT + VERB? À quelle heure est ce que vous travaillez? Note: Est ce que becomes Est ce qu before a vowel. Example: Quand est ce qu il mange? When does he eat? Intonation note: The French often form information questions by putting the interrogative expression at the end of the sentence with the voice rising at the very end. Exmples: Vous habitez où? Where do you live? Vous mangez à quelle heure? What time do you eat? VOCABULARY QUESTION WORDS Où where? Où est ce que tu travailles? Where do you work? Quand? When? Quand est ce que tu viens? When are you coming? À quelle heure? at what time? À quelle heure est ce que tu viens? What time are you coming? Comment? How? Comment est ce que tu dis cheese en Français? How do you say cheese in French? Porquoi? Why? Pourquoi est ce que tu arrives en retard? Why do you arrive late? Parce que Because Parce que je dois étudier chez moi. Because I must study at home. 3 3 French Lesson 16 Exercise Coversation with somebody from Canada Person A is asking Person B some questions. Person B is from Canada. Play both roles using est ce que. Example: [Où/habiter] Person A: Où est ce que tu habites? B: J habite à Québec. Où/étudier? (à Montréal) Où/travailler? (dans un magasin [store]) Quand/parler français? (toujours) Quand/parler anglais? (souvent) Comment/jouer au tennis? (bien) Comment/skier? (très bien) pourquoi/être (tu es) en France? (parce que j aime voyager) pourquoi/ être à Paris? (parce que j ai [I have]un ami ici) Exercise Give me the details! Person A is calling person B on the telephone and tells Person B his/her plans. Person B responds, ah bon? Expression with Qui To ask about people the French use the following expressions with the word qui, which means who? Qui? Who(m)? Qui est ce que tu invites au concert? Who are inviting to the concert? À qui? To who(m)? À qui est ce que tu téléphones? Who are you calling? De qui? About who(m)? De qui est ce que vous parlez? Who are you talking about? Avec qui? With who(m)? Avec qui est ce que tu danses? With whom are you dancing? Pour qui? For who(m)? Pour qui est ce que vous organisez la fête? For whom are you organising the party? What are you drinking? Je bois du thé. I m drinking tea. To ask what somebody is doing use the following construction: Qu est ce que + SUBJECT + VERB +? Qu est ce que tu fais? What are you doing? Ask what they re doing using verbs from Column B and I ll answer using an item from Column C. Est ce que tu fais attention quand tu répètes les verbes? Exerise: A Party! Tonight we re having a party! Fill in the following with the right form of faire. Example: Je une pizza. Je fais une pizza. Inverted Question Structure In French a common way to ask a question is to use Est ce que + Personal Pronoun + VERB. For example, Est ce que tu + VERB? Another common way to form a question is to simply invert the personal pronoun and the verb: VERB + Personal Pronoun. For example, Parles tu? Do you speak? Take a look: Regular order: Vous parlez chinois. Inversion (for a question): Parlez vous chinois? SUBJECT + VERB VERB + SUBJECT Compare the following questions and look at the subjects typed in Bold: Est ce que tu parles le français? Parles tu le français? Do you speak French? Est ce que vous mangez du fromage? Mangez vous du fromange? Do you eat cheese? This inverted format can be used to form two types of questions: Yes/No and Information inqueries. Yes/No: Voyagez vous souvent? Do you travel often? Information: Avec qui voyagez vous cet été? NOTE: If the verb ends with a vowel then you need to add a T when using the inverted question format. For example, you don t say, Où travaille elle becaues it sounds awkward. Say: Où travaille t elle? Another example: Don t say Avec qui dîne il? Say: Avec qui dîne t il?
