2 Accessoires Platine polarisante universelle La platine polarisante est un matériel facilement transportable et adaptable à tous les microscopes. Elle offre une remarquable précision dans les mesures et une excellente qualité optique et mécanique. 1 Principe description 1.1 But de l appareil En complément d'un microscope ordinaire, ce matériel permet l'observation en lumière polarisée de toutes les structures cristallines : amidon, vitamines recristallisées ou aspirine, mais surtout, pour la géologie, les lames minces de roches. 1.2 Composition L'appareil se compose d'une surplatine avec disque gradué et lame polaroïd, le polariseur, et d'un œilleton avec lame polaroïd, l'analyseur. Dimensions : surplatine : 90 x 65 mm - poids 80 g œilleton : diamètre 35 mm - poids 11 g 1.3 Mise en œuvre Le microscope sera équipé de façon à obtenir un grossissement inférieur à 80 (oculaire x 7 et objectif x 10 par exemple) pour obtenir un champ de vision assez vaste. Vous ôterez les valets pour laisser la platine libre. Le polariseur (surplatine) se pose sur la platine. Veillez à bien la centrer pour pouvoir observer ensuite les cristaux en tournant le disque sans qu'ils sortent de votre champ visuel. Pour cela, mettez une lame sur le polariseur jusqu'à ce que la lame tourne sur place : le cristal central ne doit plus sembler parcourir un cercle. Recommencer la même manœuvre avec un grossissement plus fort : la platine est centrée. Enlevez la lame. Posez l'œilleton sur l'oculaire du microscope. Tournez-le jusqu'à ne plus voir la lumière. Le microscope est prêt. FRANÇAIS 1

3 Accessoires Platine polarisante universelle La lumière naturelle se propage de façon rectiligne. A cette propagation est associée une vibration dans tous les sens. a) L'interposition d'un polariseur sur la trajectoire de la lumière ne laisse passer la vibration que dans un seul sens : le polariseur possède un plan de polarisation et la vibration qui passe est parallèle à ce plan. On peut comparer le polariseur à un filtre à fils parallèles qui ne laisse passer que les rayons dont le plan de vibration est le même que les fils. b) L'interposition d'un analyseur provoque le même phénomène. c) Si les plans de polarisation sont perpendiculaires, la lumière ne peut plus passer : il y a extinction. Quand on place une lame de roche entre le polariseur et l'analyseur, le plan de polarisation tourne un peu car la lame réfracte la lumière polarisée. La lumière réapparaît donc car le plan de polarisation de la lumière n'est plus perpendiculaire à celui de l'analyseur. La couleur s'explique par le fait que la lame crée des interférences entre les rayons lumineux qui la traversent : le milieu n'est pas homogène, les rayons traversent différents cristaux à des vitesses différentes. 1.4 Observations Après avoir placé une lame sur le polariseur, vous voyez apparaître les cristaux colorés. 4 Accessoires Platine polarisante universelle En tournant le disque on voit que chaque cristal s'éteint 4 fois par tour. l'angle où s'éteint le cristal (l'angle d'extinction) est caractéristique de chaque minéral. 6 Accessories Universal polarizing stage The polarizing stage is an equipment, which can be easily transported and adjusted to all microscopes. It provides remarkable accuracy in measurements and an excellent optical and mechanical quality. 1 Principle description 1.1 Purpose of the device As a supplement to an ordinary microscope, this equipment helps observe all crystalline structures in polarized light: starch, recrystallized vitamins or aspirin, and particularly thin strips of rocks in geology. 1.2 Composition The device consists of a mechanical stage with a graduated disk and a polaroid lens, the polarizer and an eyepiece with a polaroid lens, the analyser. Dimensions: Mechanical stage: 90 x 65 mm - weight 80 g Eyepiece: diameter 35 mm - weight 11 g 1.3 Implementation The microscope will be fitted so that the magnification is less than 80 (for example: 7x eyepiece and 10x objective) to obtain a large field of view. The clips will be removed to keep the stage free. The polarizer (mechanical stage) is placed on the stage. Make sure that it is centred so that crystals can be observed by rotating the disk without these leaving your field of view. To do this, place a slide on the polarizer until the slide rotates on spot: the central crystal must no longer seem to cover a circle. Repeat the same operation with a greater magnification: the stage is centred. Remove the slide. Place the eyepiece on the eyepiece lens of the microscope. Rotate it until no light is seen. 7 Accessories Universal polarizing stage Natural light propagates in a straight line. A vibration in all directions is associated with this propagation. a) Interposing a polarizer on the light path lets the vibration pass only in one direction: the polarizer has a polarising plane and the vibration that passes through is parallel to this plane. We can compare the polarizer to a filter with parallel wires, which lets through only those rays that have the same vibrating plane as that of the wires. b) Interposing an analyser results in the same phenomenon. c) If the polarisation planes are perpendicular, light cannot pass: there is extinction. When a rock slide is placed between the polarizer and the analyser, the polarisation plane is rotated a little as the slide refracts the polarised light. The light thus reappears because the polarisation plane of the light is no longer perpendicular to that of the analyser. The colour can be explained by the fact that the slide creates interference between the light rays that traverse it: the medium is not homogenous; the rays traverse different crystals at different speeds. 1.4 Observations After placing a slide on the polarizer, we can see coloured crystals appear. 8 Accessories Universal polarizing stage By rotating the disk we see that each crystal disappears 4 times per rotation. The angle at which the crystal disappears (the extinction angle) is characteristic of each mineral.
