Prerequisite: Intermediate French (FRE 2201/FRE 2221 or equivalent) Description du cours: A survey of the units of speech cast in practical terms and organized by classes of sounds with particular emphasis on rhythm, vowels, nasalization, diphthongs and the complex phenomena that occur at word transitions in French. The course is taught in French, in an audio laboratory, with the instructor as monitor and with a manual designed for individualized instruction. Objectif et méthode du cours: Sensibiliser les étudiants aux «outils de perception et production» nécessaires à améliorer leur prononciation française. Pour atteindre cet objectif, nous étudierons ce qu on appelle la prosodie du français (intonation, accentuation, division syllabique et rythme), ainsi que les sons du français (voyelles, consonnes et semi-voyelles). Au cours du semestre, vous pratiquerez à partir de nombreux exercices oraux et de transcription phonétique. Manuel du cours obligatoire: Violin-Wigent, Miller et Grim (2013), Sons et sens avec CD. Textes fortement recommandés: Un bon dictionnaire anglais/français Un bon dictionnaire français Composition de la note: 1. Présence, participation, assiduité (35%): Le cours est essentiellement technique et vous travaillerez individuellement sur un poste informatique aussi bien qu avec un partenaire pour quelques exercices. Votre succès dépendra de votre motivation et assiduité. Ceci implique la préparation, avant chaque classe, des pages à étudier dans Son et sens et des exercices de prononciation à faire. Pour chaque sujet, le professeur indiquera quels exercices il faut faire individuellement, quels exercices sont à faire avec un partenaire, et quels exercices seront entendus et corrigés en classe. Il est de votre responsabilité de me contacter dans le cas des difficultés, des questions, ou (d avance, si possible) si vous ne pouvez pas assister une classe. N hésitez pas à me contacter dès que vous vous sentez en difficulté; n attendez pas que vous soyez vraiment perdu!

2 La présence en classe est obligatoire. Après la première semaine du cours, je commencerai à noter les absences et retards. Après trois heures absences, sauf d ordre médical, - 2 par absence sera retiré de la note finale du cours. Pour les retards dans le travail, et cela seulement dans des cas exceptionnels, la note sera diminuée (-2 par jour de retard). L utilisation excessive de l anglais, l utilisation d un ordinateur ou d un téléphone portable de manière inappropriée, et d autres comportements perturbateurs auront comme résultat une minoration de votre note. 2. Contrôles (24%): (6 x 4%) Les contrôles testeront vos acquis par des exercices d'écoute, de transcription, de syllabation, de prononciation, etc. 3. Devoirs écrits (26%): (13 x 2%) Toutes les semaines, il y aura des devoirs écrits à rendre. Ces devoirs consisteront essentiellement en des transcriptions (entre le français et l API et viceversa), et sont à compléter avant de venir en classe. 4. Examen final (15%): L'examen mesurera vos progrès en prononciation et prosodie par rapport au début du semestre, vos connaissances théoriques et vos compétences en transcription phonétique. À la fin du semestre, ces notes seront converties à une note finale, selon la formule suivante: A=93-100; A-=90-92; B+=87-89%; B=83-86%; B-=80-82; C+=77-79%; C=73-76%; C-=70-72; D+=67-69%; D=63-66%; D-=60-62; E=below 60%. En accord avec les reglements de l université, ces notes seront converties en GPA selon la formule suivante: A = 4.0; A- = 3.67; B+ = 3.33; B= 3; B- = 2.67; C+ = 2.33; C = 2.0; C- = 1.67; D+ = 1.33; D = 1.0; D- =.67; E = 0; WF = 0; I = 0 NG = 0; S-U = 0 Accommodations for Students with Disabilities Students requesting classroom accommodation must first register with the Dean of Students Office.
