1 Séverine Tournois, IUT Mesures Physiques St-Nazaire Rencontre avec l équipage du vol STS-125 en préparation pour la mission de service SM4 du Télescope Spatial Hubble NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Maryland, USA 12 Février 2007 SM4 (Servicing Mission 4) est la dernière mission prévue pour le télescope spatial Hubble. En 2009, la navette spatiale Américaine transportera les sept astronautes qui installeront des instruments encore plus performants prolongeant ainsi le succès de Hubble jusqu en Les nouveaux instruments installés seront Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) et Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS). D autre part, les astronautes seront chargés de réparer en orbite les instruments Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) et Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). 2 With more than 18 years of historic science already accomplished, Hubble will be reborn with Servicing Mission 4 (SM4), scheduled for early Astronauts will use the Shuttle to bring new cutting-edge science instruments to enhance Hubble's capabilities by large factors, and will attempt two instrument repairs, as well as install gyros, batteries and other crucial devices to further its continued success through the year New science instruments Cosmic Origins Spectrograph COS is designed for high throughput, medium resolution (R=20,000) spectroscopy of point sources, allowing the efficient observation of numerous faint extragalactic and galactic ultraviolet ( A) targets. The primary science objectives of the mission are the study of the origins of large-scale structure in the universe, the formation and evolution of galaxies, and the origin of stellar and planetary systems and the cold interstellar medium. It will help determine how elements needed for life such as carbon and iron first formed and how their abundances have increased over the lifetime of the universe. I The instrument has been designed with maximum effective area as the primary constraint, and will provide more than an order of magnitude gain in sensitivity over previous HST instruments in this wavelength region. Wide Field Camera 3 WFC3 will study a diverse range of objects and phenomena, from young and extremely distant galaxies, to much more nearby stellar systems, to objects within our very own solar system. Its key feature is its ability to span the electromagnetic spectrum from the ultraviolet, through visible/ optical light, and into the near infrared. WFC3 extends Hubble s capability not only by seeing deeper into the universe but also by providing wide-field imagery in all three regions of the spectrum UV- Visible-NIR. It is this wide-field panchromatic coverage of that makes WFC3 so unique. As an example, WFC3 will observe young, hot stars (glowing predominantly in UV) and older, cooler stars (glowing predominantly in the red and NIR) in the same galaxy.

11 Tests de WFC3 en environnement spatial au Goddard Space Flight Center (1) J ai travaillé sur les tests optiques de WFC3 en environnement spatial en collaboration avec le Space Telescope Science Institute de Baltimore.

12 Tests de WFC3 en environnement spatial au Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) (2) Afin de pouvoir tester WFC3, il a fallu fabriquer un simulateur de Hubble, un système optique très complexe réalisé par le Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) et GSFC. Le simulateur est capable de reproduire les caracteristiques exactes de Hubble c est-à-dire qu il produit les mêmes défauts très précisement (principalement aberration sphérique). COS et WFC3, en plus de leur rôle de spectrographe et de camera, sont également conçus pour corriger l aberration spherique de Hubble (COSTAR n est plus nécessaire). Le simulateur de Hubble et WFC3 sont alignés ensemble à l intérieur de la chambre thermique au Goddard Space Flight Center.
