2 Abstract During the last decade, the number of wireless devices like digital organizers, mobile phones and laptop computers has drastically increased. At the same time, several technologies, like Bluetooth, GPRS, or WiFi have become mature and offer a high-performance wireless infrastructure to mobile users. However, there exist still many non-equipped areas where no infrastructure is available. For example, during emergency operations, rescuers may want to deploy temporarily an autonomous (or ad-hoc) network. Under these settings, mobile devices (or nodes) operate in a self-organized manner and can only communicate with their immediate wireless neighbors. To send a packet to a remote destination, a node relies on the routing capabilities of the other nodes. In a mobile ad-hoc network (MANET), problems are inherently more complicated to solve than in a regular wired network because of the dynamic topology and the absence of an underlying communication infrastructure. Many algorithms and protocols have been proposed for mobile ad-hoc networks, but very little has been done to evaluate these solutions in real environments. In most cases, algorithms are evaluated by simulation. Such a solution leads however to incorrect conclusions, as we show in the thesis. In order to avoid the shortcomings of simulations, an adequate software framework must be available, in order to ease the development and the deployment of applications or algorithms. We have developed FRANC, a lightweight Java framework dedicated to the implementation of real ad-hoc applications. FRANC is composed of an extensible library of building blocks that can be composed to build more complex applications. The thesis is not limited to practical contributions. We have also addressed two important problems that are at the root of many other distributed computing algorithms. Although extensively studied in wired networks, this research domain is however still in its early stages in MANETs. We first propose a simple broadcast protocol that disseminates efficiently and reliably a message in a one dimensional graph like a car highway. Then, we study the consensus problem and identify the necessary and sufficient conditions for solving it in self-organized networks when the participants are unknown (in the absence of crashes). Finally, we discuss a pragmatic solution to consensus with crashes based on weak ordering oracles. More specifically, we propose an implementation of these oracles and present results collected in a real small-scale wireless testbed. 3 Résumé Durant la dernière décennie, le nombre d appareils disposant d un moyen de communication sans fil, comme les téléphones mobiles, certains agendas digitaux ou ordinateurs portables a considérablement augmenté. Parallèlement, plusieurs technologies telles que Bluetooth, GPRS et WiFi se sont développées et permettent actuellement de déployer une infrastructure de communication sans-fil performante. Cependant, il existe encore beaucoup de régions où une telle infrastructure n est pas disponible. Par exemple, lors d opérations d aide en cas de catastrophe, les secours peuvent avoir besoin de créer temporairement un réseau autonome (ou adhoc). Dans une telle situation, les appareils mobiles (ou noeuds) fonctionnent de manière auto-organisée et ne sont capables de communiquer directement qu avec leurs voisins. Pour pouvoir atteindre une destination éloignée, un noeud dépend de la capacité des autres noeuds à propager son message. Dans un réseau ad-hoc mobile, les problèmes sont par essence plus compliqués à résoudre à cause de sa topologie dynamique et de l absence d infrastructure de communication. Beaucoup d algorithmes et de protocoles ont été proposés pour les réseaux mobiles ad-hoc, mais peu d entre eux ont été expérimentés étant donné la complexité de leur mise en oeuvre dans un environnement réel. Dans la plupart des cas, les algorithmes sont évalués par simulation, ce qui peut conduire à des conclusions incorrectes, comme nous le montrons dans cette thèse. Pour contourner les points faibles de la simulation, un environnement applicatif adéquat est indispensable. Nous avons développé FRANC, un cadriciel (framework) simple écrit en Java, dédié à l implémentation et aux tests réels d applications ad-hoc. FRANC est composé d une collection extensible de pièces qui peuvent être composées pour former des applications plus complexes. Cette thèse ne se limite pas à des contributions pratiques. Nous avons également traité de deux problèmes importants se trouvant à la base de beaucoup d autres algorithmes distribués appartenant à un domaine de recherche largement édutié dans les réseaux câblés mais très peu défriché dans les réseaux ad-hoc. Nous proposons premièrement une primitive simple de communication qui permet de diffuser de manière efficace et fiable un message dans un réseau unidimensionnel tel une autoroute. Deuxièmement, nous étudions le problème du consensus en identifiant les conditions nécessaires et suffisantes pour le résoudre dans un réseau auto-organisé lorsque les participants ne sont pas connus (sans défaillances). Par la suite, nous discutons d une solution pragmatique au problème du consensus basée sur des oracles d ordonnancement en présence de défaillances. Concrètement, nous proposons une implémentation de ces oracles et présentons des résultats mesurés dans notre réseau ad-hoc.
