The region is namely responsible for 35% of the national slaughtering of veal calves and nearly 19% of adult bovine animals. 8 05/ ANIMAL FEED In, developments made in the production of food for animals (compound feed, premixes and pet food) followed progress made in the domain of livestock production. With almost 8.5 million tonnes produced (excluding pet food) in 2011 alone, is responsible for almost 41% of the national production of animal feed. New investments principally aim to improve the productivity of sites, food safety (heat treated foods) and the traceability of products while responding to increased market segmentation when it comes to food products (100% vegetable-based feed, GMO-free sector, etc.). The development of products of a higher added value (premixes, fish food, horse food, etc.) is another much pursued area. Complementing the basic raw ingredients used, they are chosen by IAAs (agribusinesses and agrifood industries) for their specific functional (binding, giving texture, adding taste, etc.) or nutritional properties. 15 12/ Ranked 10th in the world (1% of the total volume), the production of seaweed in (90% of the total volume in France) is for the most part carried out by wrack gathering boats (65,000 tonnes), producers on foot completing this production (6,000 tonnes) and via aquaculture, representing just 50 tonnes of the total volume. This production method is set to be developed via initiatives led by private actors and the collective actions of the BREIZH'ALG programme. Naturally, a very wide range of seaweed species is present along the Breton coast and the development of these is destined for various different uses. The requirements and recommendations which set this product apart from existing products concern its production, processing and/or packaging. The number of companies displaying the CCP is decreasing due to the development of various other qualifications: IFS, BRC and official quality logos. This nevertheless remains a useful scheme for improving the quality of products.
