1 Digital dynamics Dynamiques Numériques RESEO Conference 23-26/11/2011 Biographies by order of appearance par ordre d apparition Frits Lintmeijer Frits Lintmeijer (born 1956) of the GroenLinks party (GreenLeft), is alderman of Utrecht. In addition to the Culture portfolio, his other areas of responsibility are transports, monuments and archaeology, regional and international issues and the northwest- and south area of the city. After having studied sociology, specialising in mass communication and comparative socio- economical studies, he worked in the field of communications, public relations and strategic advice, both in the public and private sector as well as as an independent. He has also held diverse honorary positions in cultural, social, and ecological organisations. He especially underlines the necessity of developing alternative means of transport, as well as the importance of culture for society: Culture is not a cherry on the cake, but rather a motor which makes Utrecht even more attractive. Frits Lintmeijer (né en 1956) est échevin d Utrecht. Il appartient au parti GroenLinks (Verts). En plus de son portefeuille culturel, il gère les dossiers des transports, des monuments et de l archéologie, des enjeux régionaux et internationaux et les zones nord- ouest et sud de la ville. Il insiste particulièrement sur la nécessité de développer des moyens de transport public alternatifs et sur l importance de la culture pour la société: La culture n est pas la cerise sur le gâteau, mais plutôt un moteur qui fait d Utrecht une ville encore plus attractive. Rebecca Meitlis rebecca@hamseyarts.co.uk Rebecca has a wide experience as a facilitator, working with large diverse groups through processes such as Open Space and Appreciative Inquiry. She works with teams helping to articulate and refine values, build strategy and find creative and imaginative solutions to work issues. Rebecca s background is in Opera and Creative Learning. Her career in opera began when she was awarded an Arts Council bursary to train as a director with the Scottish Opera. She then became a staff director at English National Opera. In 1985, with her colleague David Sulkin, she developed a strategy for the Education and Outreach work of the company, now known as the Baylis 1

2 Programme. They co- directed it for ten years. Since leaving English National Opera, she has worked in a freelance capacity for many arts and education organisations including : Youth Music, Arts Council England or Creative Partnerships. She is now a Feldenkrais Practitioner and has focused her practice on working with performers. She has given classes, among others, at Glyndebourne and Warsaw Opera s Young Singers Programme. Camille Baker camille@swampgirl67.net Camille Baker is an artist- performer, researcher and curator within various art forms such as interactive and performance installation, music composition and performance, video art, web animation and experience design. She has been (among others) Executive Director/Curator of The Escape Artists Society in Vancouver, Lead Curator, Conference Director and Co- Performance Art Curator for the New Forms Festival in Vancouver, and editor- in- chief of an online pop- culture relationship support magazine ( Tales of Slacker Bonding ) during 3 years (2000/2003). At the same time, she participated in several conferences, the most recent being Low Lives 3 (April 2011) in Salt Lake City and the Digital Stages Performance Festival 2011 in London. She has recently completed a PhD project called MINDtouch through the SMARTlab Digital Media Institute, involving social collaborative «VJing» within mobile performance media contexts. Camille Baker est une artiste, chercheuse et curatrice dans plusieurs formes artistiques telles que : des installations et spectacles interactifs, de la composition musicale, de l art vidéo, de l animation web, du design. 3 Marga Wobma- Helmich Marga.wobma- muziektheater.nl Marga Wobma- Helmich is director of education, participation and programming of Amsterdam Music Theatre, the house of De Nederlandse Opera and the National Ballet. Besides opera and ballet education, she is responsible for the international programming of the theatre together with the artistic director for opera, Pierre Audi and ballet, Ted Brandsen. Before she started in this position in October 2009, she was the head of education and participation of Het Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), where she initiated the education work of the Concertgebouw as well as of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Led by Marga, the department developed an impressive programme for schools, teachers, families, young talents and amateur musicians. Marga has been on the board of different organisations, as chairman of the education board of ECHO (European Concert Halls Organisation), and the education board of the association of Dutch orchestras. She was also member of different advisory committees such as of the Amsterdam School of the Arts and the National Cultural Participation Fund. Anthony Heidweiller anthony@yo- opera.nl Anthony Heidweiller, artistic director of the Yo! Opera Festival & Laboratory, started his career as a singer in the choir of De Nederlandse Opera and is now a freelance opera maker. Today, he is not only a singer and creator of operas, but also a developer/inspirator/booster of innovative forms of opera. Amongst other innovations, he created the concept of Opera from the Heart (thirty 3 minute shopping mall operas), Opera in the Bus (community opera project in coproduction with GVU city bus company) and Water (site specific vocal journey on a water sewage plant). His work for Yo! Opera was awarded a prize by the Stichting Nationale Evenementenprijzen in 2006 for most innovative event (Opera in the Bus). In 2008, he received the Prize for Art and Cultural education by the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds. In parallel, Anthony teaches at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague and works as a freelance director. He has directed several performances, amongst others pieces for the Oeral Festival, the Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, the Nederlands Kamerorkest and Stichting Jeugdconcerten. In 2008 he was the artistic director of the Marco Polo project commissioned by the Nederlandse Opera. Who is Singing in my Street? is a community arts project developed for RUHR 2010 (Cultural Capital of Europe). From 2009 until 2011 Anthony was Artist in Residence at the Amsterdam Hogeschool voor de Kunsten. 3

De 2009 à 2011, Anthony était un artiste en résidence pour la Amsterdam Hogeschool voor de Kunsten. Geert van Boxtel geert@yo- opera.nl Geert is a free lance dramaturgue and artistic advisor. Geert works in music, music theatre and opera and is currently active for Yo! Opera and Rosa Ensemble. At Yo! Opera he assists the Artistic Director in programming the festival, developing projects and policies and supporting the team. Geert studied musicology at Utrecht University and specialized in music sociology and - dramaturgy. After his studies he worked mainly as a music and theatre producer and was manager of the music festival Gelderse Muziekzomer for three years, before focussing entirely on dramaturgy and advisory work. Next to this, Geert writes programme texts, provides introductions for classical music concerts and advises two provincial commissions. Geert est dramaturge free- lance et conseiller artistique. Il travaille dans le domaine de la musique, du théâtre musical et de l opéra, essentiellement auprès du Yo! Opera et du Rosa Ensemble. Au Yo! Debora van Stenis- Patty debora@yo- opera.nl Debora van Stenis- Patty studied Cultural and Civic Education and specialized in art education. Debora started working as a trainee at Yo! Opera and was then appointed Head of Education in She has co- developed and managed several of the creative partnerships that connect Yo! Opera to both primary and seconday schools in Utrecht. In 2010, Debora graduated as a teacher and recently lectured at the Hogeschool der Kunsten Utrecht on theatre education. Debora is also involved in the community music projects of Muziekhuis Utrecht and Fort van de Verbeelding. 4

5 Debora van Stenis- Patty a fait des études d Éducation culturelle et civique et s est spécialisée dans la sensibilisation aux arts. Debora a commencé à travailler comme stagiaire au Yo! Opera et elle est devenue responsable de leur Service Educatif en Debora a notamment co- développé et géré plusieurs partenariats créatifs établis par le Yo! Opera avec des écoles primaires et des collèges d Utrecht. En 2010, Debora a obtenu le titre de professeur et donne actuellement des cours au Hogeschool der Kunsten Utrecht sur la sensibilisation au théâtre. Elle est également impliquée dans les projets musicaux communautaires du Muziekhuis Utrecht et du Fort van de Verbeelding. Vincent Koreman vincent@incubate.org Born in 1972 in Dongen, Vincent Koreman is Artistic Director of the multidisciplinary festival Incubate in Tilburg. As one of the founders of the festival, he developed Incubate into the leading annual event for independent arts in Europe. Participation is one of the key elements of Incubate and since a couple of years the festival works with the so- called Social Festival Model. This model provides complete insight into the planning and development of the festival structure and invites everyone to contribute to the festival. Vincent Koreman sees himself as a catalyst, translating the dynamics and developments in the field of art to the Incubate audience and so dissolving the borders between the two. Vincent Koreman has a background in art education and in the past taught film and new media at the Fontys Academy in Tilburg. Koreman is also active in several municipal advisory boards and governmental organisations on the topics of education and policy. Né en 1972 à Dongen, Vincent Koreman est directeur artistique du festival multidisciplinaire Incubate à Tillburg. Étant l un des fondateurs du festival, il a fait de Incubate l évènement annuel leader en matière d arts indépendants en Europe. La participation est un des éléments- clé de Incubate, et depuis quelques années, le festival travaille sur le Social Festival Model. Ce modèle donne un aperçu du développement des plans et idées dans la structure du festival, et invite tout le monde à y participer. Vincent se voit comme un catalyseur qui traduit les dynamiques et les développements dans le champ artistique à l attention du public de Incubate, abolissant ainsi les frontières entre eux. Vincent a une formation d éducation aux arts et a donné des cours sur le cinéma et les nouveaux médias à la Fontys Academy de Tillburg. Il participe également à plusieurs groupes d expertises municipaux et d organisations gouvernementales sur les politiques d éducation. Ingvild Molenaar Ingvild@yo- opera.nl Ingvild Molenaar graduated in photography and Social Work with a specialization in art education. For over a decade, Ingvild worked as a producer in many different theatre projects, many with gifted young performers. In the past few years, she specialised in social media management and social marketing. Ingvild sees new media and the way the internet is integrating in daily life as an important change in the way people communicate. A change that implies that performing arts have to build a new bridge to their audiences, which is essential to maintain a dialogue between the arts and the audience, especially when considering younger generation. Ingvild Molenaar est diplômée en photographie et a une licence en assistance sociale spécialisée dans l éducation aux arts. Ces dix dernières années, Ingvild a travaillé comme productrice dans différents 5

6 projets théâtraux, notamment avec de nombreux jeunes talentueux. Ces dernières années elle s est spécialisée dans le management des médias sociaux et dans le marketing social. Elle voit les nouveaux médias et la place qu Internet prend petit à petit dans notre vie quotidienne comme un changement important dans les façons de communiquer des gens. Ce changement implique que les arts du spectacle doivent créer un nouveau lien vers leurs publics. Ingvild considère que ce lien est essentiel pour maintenir un dialogue entre les arts et le public, notamment la jeune génération. Maren Siebert maren@bekijkt.nl Maren Siebert has been working as Education Manager at Bekijk 't since Bekijk 't is an organisation that encourages the cultural participation of young people. Multi- media work, interactive theatre, music, film, animation and gaming are some of the tools that Bekijk t uses in its activities. In recent years, Maren started using social media as a means of communication with young people. It offers the advantage of communicating directly with youngsters, outside of the theatre or the classroom, in a media form that appeals to them. Maren uses social media not only to approach and interest young people in Bekijk t s activities, but also gives them the opportunity to participate in multimedia theatre or videos. Maren believes that social media are only useful when they reflect an honest interest in the people one is communicating with, and when these contacts are furthered in the offline world. In addition to her work for Bekijk 't, Maren is chairman of the board of the interactive percussion group Slagzin. Last summer, she enrolled in the AHK (Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten) Summer School Remix Culture, where she conducted research on how today s digital culture expresses the feeling of nostalgia. On behalf of the HKU (Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht) Master of Art Education, Maren gave a guest lecture about the influence of Digital Media on Art Education. Depuis 2006, Maren Siebert travaille comme Responsable Educative à Bekjik t, une organisation qui encourage la participation culturelle des jeunes. Bekijk t utilise notamment des disciplines comme le travail multimédia, le théâtre interactif, la musique, le cinéma, l animation ou encore le jeu. Ces dernières années, Maren a commencé à utiliser les médias sociaux dans sa communication avec les jeunes. Ces outils offrent la possibilité de communiquer directement avec les jeunes hors du théâtre ou de la salle de classe, sous une forme qui les attire. Maren n utilise pas seulement les médias sociaux pour se rapprocher des jeunes et les enthousiasmer pour Beljik t, mais également pour leur donner la possibilité de participer dans du théâtre multimédia ou des vidéos. Elle est persuadée que les médias sociaux ne sont utiles que lorsqu on les utilise pour exprimer un intérêt sincère pour les personnes avec qui on communique, et pour se connecter avec le monde déconnecté. En parallèle, Maren est présidente du conseil d administration du groupe de percussion interactif Slagzin. L été dernier, elle a intégré la AHK (Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten) Summer School Remix Culture, où elle a fait des recherches sur la façon dont la culture numérique actuelle exprime la nostalgie. Elle a été invitée pour donner une conférence sur l influence des médias numériques sur la sensibilisation aux arts dans le cadre du Master d Education aux arts de l Institut des Arts d Utrecht (HKU). 6

7 Esther Linssen muziektheater.nl Esther Linssen graduated in 1996 at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, studying with Diane Forlano, and obtained diplomas as a musician in the categories Opera and Recital. Besides her training at the conservatory, she took lessons with Christina Deutekom and James McCray. Kenneth Montgomery (conductor), Gijs de Lange (director), Ali Çifteci (actor, musician) and her coach and accompanist Peter Nilsson have been of great influence in her development as a singer and performer. Esther has worked on various concert and staged performances of operas. In 2005 she sang the role of Carmen in Opéra Mosset s Carmen Sacrée in France. Her repertoire includes Verdi: Abigail in Nabucco, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, Giselda in I'Lombardi, Violetta in La Traviata and Aida in Aida. But she has also sung Georgetta in Il Tabarro by Puccini, the Contessa in Le Nozze di Figaro by Mozart and the Little Vixen in The Cunning Little Vixen by Janacek. Besides opera, she has sung major choral works such as Verdi's Requiem and Dvorak's Stabat Mater. She also worked as an actress/singer at Amsterdam Theatre (Toneelgroep Amsterdam) in the production "Master Class and then at the National Theatre in The Hague in "Van Oude Mensen". Since 2007, Esther is part of the Ensemble Mareas, performing concerts at the Doelen in Rotterdam and Antwerp. Esther worked as an elementary school music teacher in 2009 and Since November 2010 Esther is education officer at Het Muziektheater Amsterdam. As a performer she is also currently on tour with WASLIJN, her first solo performance, combining classical repertoire with her own texts (Directors: Ali Cifteci and Ruut Weissman). Mandy Romme Mandy.romme@dno.nl Mandy Romme works for Het Muziektheater Amsterdam as new media coordinator in the marketing and communication department. She was born in 1988 in Breda, where she later studied International Media & Entertainment Management. She graduated in Next to her studies, she worked as a producer for the television production company Simpel 7

8 Media in Amsterdam from 2008 to As a producer, she was involved in the television programs: The prettiest girl in class, The Dutch poker champion and Late night stars of poker. She started working as new media coordinator for De Nederlandse Opera in Since 2011, she also holds this position for the Dutch National Ballet and Het Muziektheater Amsterdam. Her main interest as a new media coordinator is to develop new ways to use social media to market opera and ballet productions or projects. Mandy Romme travaille pour le Het Muziektheater Amsterdam en tant que Coordinatrice Nouveaux Médias dans le département Marketing et Communication. Elle est née à Breda en 1988, où elle a suivi des études de Management culturel et Médias Internationaux. Katie Tearle Katie.tearle@glyndebourne.com Glyndebourne aspires to enrich people s lives through opera. We do this not just through the quality of our productions but also through the work of the pioneering Education Department which has inspired personal, creative and community engagement and development for the past 25 years. The programme of creativity, participation and learning has three strands: youth and community work, talks and events and new work. Major projects have included three site- specific Community Operas, the Youth operas MISPER and award winning ZOË (filmed for Channel 4), SCHOOL 4 LOVERS, A HIP H OPERA and most recently, KNIGHT CREW, a new community opera performed in March The opera which involved over 100 young people alongside professional performers was the subject of a BBC 2 documentary series, Gareth Malone Goes to Glyndebourne. Katie has a first class honours degree in Music, Drama and Dance from Birmingham University. After working briefly for Opera North in marketing and press, she took an MA in Music Performance Studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and City University and embarked on a professional singing career alongside University teaching. In 1986 she founded the Education Department at Glyndebourne. Katie is a trustee of The Michael Tippett Musical Foundation and past chair of RESEO and former Regional Council Member of Arts Council England, South East. She is currently a Visiting Research Fellow at Sussex University. In November 2010, Katie won the Opera Ability Media International Award run by Leonard Cheshire Disability for her work as Head of Education for the last 25 years. Ainsi, d importants projets d opéras élaborés en lien avec le tissus associatif local, comme l opéra pour jeunes MISPER, le projet ZOË (filmé par Channel 4 et récompensé par un prix), SCHOOL 4 LOVERS, A HIP H OPERA et plus récemment KNIGHT CREW, un nouvel opéra communautaire présenté en mars 2010, ont été développés sur ces 3 axes. KNIGHT CREW, qui a impliqué près de 100 jeunes 8

9 aux côtés d artistes professionnels, a été le sujet d une série documentaire de la BBC2, Gareth Malone Goes to Glyndebourne. Katie est diplômée en Musique, Dramaturgie et Danse de Birmingham University. Après un court passage à Opera North où elle travaille dans le département marketing et presse, elle suit un Master en Etudes des spectacles musicaux au Guildhall School of Music and Drama and City University et commence en parallèle une carrière de chanteuse professionnelle. Katie est administratrice de The Michael Tippet Musical Foundation et a été présidente du conseil d administration de RESEO et membre du conseil régional (Sud- Est) du Arts Council England. Amy Bere Amy.bere@glyndebourne.com Amy Bere has been Education Projects Manager at Glyndebourne since She is responsible for the Glyndebourne Youth Opera, an out- of- school project for young people aged 8 to 18, which uses opera as a starting point for young peoples creativity. The Glyndebourne Youth Opera has a current membership of 180 young people and presents work in local galleries, Glyndebourne studio and main stage spaces, and tours nationally and internationally. Amy also programs the pre- performance Talks and Events for the Glyndebourne Festival as part of the organisation s commitment to enriching the audiences experience. Prior to joining the Education Department, Amy worked as a Creative Producer. She works closely with the Head of Education to produce New Work for a variety of audiences, including work by and for young people, as well as the work of the Glyndebourne Composer- in- Residence. Amy gained her BA from Middlesex University and her MA in Advanced Theatre Practice from Central School of Speech and Drama. During this period he was also member and then chair of the RESEO Steering Committee. He had started his career at the Opéra national de Lorraine, in the education department of the Orchestre de Nancy. He had graduated in cultural marketing from the Institut Commercial de Nancy (ICN) and completed postgraduate studies in public and cultural management. Every summer until August 2011, he also ran music holidays for children and teenagers. Since 2010, he teaches marketing of arts and culture at the Institut d Etudes Politiques Sciences Po Lille. Matthieu Rietzler est, depuis avril 2008, secrétaire général de l Opéra de Lille. Auparavant, il a été pendant quatre ans responsable du département jeune public de l Opéra national du Rhin, période durant laquelle il a été membre du conseil d administration puis président de RESEO. Il avait fait ses débuts à l Opéra national de Lorraine, comme chargé de développement du public de l Orchestre de Nancy. Il est diplômé en marketing culturel de l Institut Commercial de Nancy (ICN) et titulaire d un diplôme de 3ème cycle en management public et culturel. Jusqu en août 2011, il dirigeait également chaque été des séjours de vacances musicales pour enfants et adolescents et depuis 2010, il est chargé de cours (marketing des arts et de la culture) à l Institut d Études Politiques Sciences- po Lille. As communication officer, he creates links between the French- language and Dutch- language performing arts scene. He initiates an editorial committee which aims at providing an overview of the situation of performing arts in both Belgian linguistic communities, written by editors from each community. Wanting to experience a wider range of communication tools, he joins Switch On (Belgian market- leader in the area of photoengraving and digital printing) and starts up an independant structure to provide councel for clients on these diverse techniques and their development. He leaves Switch On in 1998 to found Tilt Factory. Originally, Tilt Factory was a creation and graphic production studio. It developed into a communication agency by gaining diverse experience with the corporate sector, broshures, mailings, internet sites, e- mailings etc. As today, performance rhymes with breaking edge technology, Tilt Factory offers its clients a team of 10 staff members who share an avant- garde outlook. Our interest in new graphic trends but also in evolving communication tools makes Tilt Factory a visual communication agency capable of offering each client the adequate tool for interesting the user of a product or service. 13 works with composer Philip Glass, she became resident choreographer and later director at English National Opera. She created choreography and opera productions for The Lyric Opera of Chicago, Los Angeles Opera, Seattle and San Francisco Operas, Netherlands Opera, Wiesbaden & Kiel Operas, Royal Opera House, BBC Proms, and Paris Opéra Bastille. Following injury, she furthered her work and pursued studies in holistic health therapeutic bodywork and Qi Gong. Clare published her own movement method - The Energy Source simple daily exercise for mind and body vitality - based on work with singers in rehearsals at the Royal Opera, and was recognized with a LaurenceOlivier Award nomination for outstanding achievement in opera. Clare is now a dance, music and holistic health animateur working to communicate the benefits of these forms for individual and community well being. She is based in Zurich where she also teaches classical & contemporary dance, focusing on holistic techniques to promote the dancer s wellbeing for a sustainable career. She regularly presents her innovative research for Tamed (Tanz Medizin Association) and IADMs (International Association of Dance Medicine & Science). She is an active member of RESEO steering committee and leads RESEO Dance Space. Clare Thurman Clare.thurman@roh.org.uk Clare graduated from Roehampton University with a BA (Hons) Dance Studies in 2002 and subsequently joined the Training Department of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD). Her role at the RAD involved planning and coordinating courses and classes for young people across the UK, and providing support in this area for international representatives. During her four years at the RAD Clare worked as Communcations Officer in the Faculty of Education providing support across the range of Higher Education programmes offered. Continuing her study Clare embarked upon her MA at Roehampton University in 2006 and joined the Royal Opera House (ROH) Education Department the following year. As Family Performances Coordinator, she was responsible for promoting special performances to those new to opera and ballet, and delivering education activities alongside each performance. 13

14 Clare completed the Community Dance Practitioner course at East London Dance in 2008 and is now Ballet Education Manager of the ROH. She is responsible for planning and delivering a wide range of education projects that support the organisation s Education strategy and focus on the work of The Royal Ballet Company.
