Quand Rachid Bouhazid rencontre Sonia, ils ont 20 ans. Ils habitent à Marseille. Rachid décide que Sonia est la femme parfaite. Elle est timide et sérieuse mais aussi très intelligente. Sonia aime Rachid aussi. Ils sont tous les deux d origine maghrébine; donc ils ont une culture similaire. Rachid est dynamique, intelligent et loyal, mais il est aussi très ambitieux et il adore sa profession de reporter. Rachid et Sonia se marient et ils ont une fille: Yasmine. In order to learn to pronounce French correctly, you ll need to recognize the spellings that are used to represent those sounds. The following chart lists common spellings of each specific vowel sound. Listed in the middle column are the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) symbols for each sound; these symbols are used in dictionaries to show word pronunciation. On the right are examples of common words containing those sounds. The speaker will pronounce each sound (indicated by the symbol in the middle column) and then each example. Repeat each sound and example after the speaker. In later chapters, you will be given specific hints on how to produce these sounds using your mouth, lips, and tongue. Although acquiring a native-like French pronunciation requires practice, the exercises throughout Débuts will give you a solid foundation, and you will gradually refine your French pronunciation skills. 8 Chapitre 1

Prononciation. In most sentences, the plural subject pronouns ils and elles sound exactly like their singular counterparts il and elle. Other pronouns have distinct pronunciations. Listen and repeat. The forms of the verb être are all irregular, following no standard pattern. You must pay attention to the pronoun, since it clarifies which person the speaker is talking about. Now listen to each sentence, repeat it aloud, and circle the form you hear.
