Il vise à développer une méthodologie éducative afin que le contenu éducatif approprié ainsi que les outils correspondants puissent être disposés au personnel approprie. Le but est d améliorer les pratiques de management et d administration industrielle. During the last decade, Maintenance and Engineering Asset Management are increasingly recognised as importance functions within European industry in its quest for long term sustainability. The implementation of efficient Maintenance Management Policies requires adequately skilled personnel. Yet, there is a clear gap between the current industrial needs and personnel competences. This gap is striking as the current educational and VET systems lack the necessary tools to provide adequate training and competence assessment. Recently, within the EU, the efforts to establish a common framework for Maintenance Management Competence Requirements have taken a new direction as a result of initiatives of EU professional bodies, such as the EFNMS, which is acting to establish related guidelines and requirements. The ilearn2main project is in line with such initiatives, aiming at bringing the right innovative e-training and competence self-assessment tools to the right people, in order to improve Maintenance Management practice in modern production units. The tools and e- content were developed by an EU consortium comprising Universities & Research Centres (University of Portsmouth & ATHENA Research & Innovation Centre), Professional Bodies (Utek - Swedish Maintenance Society), Innovation Diffusion Parties (Latvia Technology Park, CNIPMMR-The SME Association of Romania) and maintenance-related engineering companies (ATLANTIS Engineering). The developed tools, available at have been pilot tested at several National and International events, including the 4th World Congress on Engineering Asset Management. Piloting results show a very positive reception and prospects for the innovative tools. Description: In the manufacturing sector, global competition, characterised by both a technology push and a market pull, the rapidly evolving technology and increased customer requirements present considerable challenges for industrial management and technical personnel. Modern enterprises cannot afford to under-utilise internal resources, being material or human. Performance and quality maximisation is sought, among other, through asset (equipment) and human resources (training) management. Assets and equipment should be in the best operating state from a cost efficiency point of view. Industrial personnel at the shop floor should be adequately trained to proactively support such operation. Quality, safety and performance criteria should be continuously met. Assets life cycle costs should be kept down, while securing proper operations and smooth internal logistics. The ilearn2main brings the right innovative e- training and e-assessment tools in order to improve Maintenance Management practice and self-assessment of competences. The Maintenance Management profession requires a truly multidisciplinary set of skills. Higher education courses do not offer the necessary body of knowledge in a single course. Some postgraduate courses seek to offer Maintenance Engineering training and the same applies to professional vocational training services, although, more often than not, such courses tend to focus on specific aspects of the required Maintenance skills. An important hurdle is related to the fact that maintenance 2

Due to their professional engagements, such user groups are under significant time and location constraints, often preventing them from attending a professional training course. E-Training is a viable, flexible and cost-efficient alternative for delivering Maintenance Management training. This project has developed an e-learning system and e- assessment system for Maintenance Management, namely ilearn2main ( The system developement was based on the open source LMS platform Moodle. ilearn2main enables the delivery of e-training in all fundamental areas of Maintenance Management and include a tool for the automated e-assessment of competences. This is in line with the requirement to streamline and standardise maintenance competence assessment. The system has been pilot tested with different user groups and an evaluation survey was conducted. It has been particularly encouraging to find evidence of practically uniform acceptance of e-learning technologies as a means of delivering maintenance management training. Among the survey findings are useful directions for further system enhancement and enrichment.
