Deux configurations sont possibles : le nombre de fournisseurs à sélectionner est fixé à l avance (q fournisseurs); le nombre de fournisseurs est le résultat de l optimisation. 5

Problème de capacité : Il n existe aucun fournisseur capable de fournir la quantité totale du produit requise par l E; L E décide pour des raisons stratégiques (non dépendance d un seul fournisseur) de faire intervenir plusieurs fournisseurs, chacun est chargé d une proportion de la commande. Cette décision exige souvent plus de coordination entre l E et ses fournisseurs. Par ailleurs, les coûts de ce choix sont souvent plus élevés que lors du mono-sourcing. 6
