1 GCSE Bitesize Controlled Assessment Model 2 (for A/A* grade) Question 4 Subject: Topic: French Speaking In this document you will find practical help on how to improve your grade. Before you start working through the material, read the Exam Skills section carefully. Work through the task for either model 1 or 2 depending on the grade you are aiming for. Model 1 has suggestions for reaching a grade C and above. Model 2 has suggestions for reaching a grade A and above.

2 MODEL 2 (for A/A* grade) Context: The world of work Task: You are applying to an agency to find a summer placement abroad and you are interviewed over the telephone. Answer the questions which you are asked on the following points, making use of the suggestions provided. You ll need to speak for about 4-6 minutes. Ambitions for the future 1. Studies 2. Future career 3. Etc. 2

3 Question 4 Très bien. Alors, maintenant, dis-moi, quels sont tes projets pour l avenir? Example answer «Plus tard, si c était possible, je voudrais travailler pour l association «Vétérinaires sans Frontières». Avant mon voyage en Asie l année dernière, je n étais jamais sortie d Europe et je n avais jamais vu la misère. Après être allée en Asie et après avoir fait mon stage chez un vétérinaire, je sais que «vétérinaire sans frontières», ce serait le métier idéal pour moi parce que j adore les animaux et les voyages. En plus, bien que je ne sois pas très bonne, je parle quatre langues (anglais, urdu, français et espagnol). L année prochaine, si je réussis mes GCSE, je prendrai biologie, chimie, géographie et français pour les A levels. Après, si je pouvais, je prendrais une année sabbatique et je travaillerais pour une organisation humanitaire en Afrique ou en Asie. Ensuite, bien que ce soit très compétitif, je ferai des études dans une école vétérinaire et je sais que ça m intéressera.» Guidance Variety of tenses You need to show off your knowledge of tenses. Find ways of using the conditional (ce serait, je prendrais, je travaillerais), the future tense (je prendrai, je ferai, ça m intéressera), and the pluperfect (je n étais jamais sortie, je n avais jamais vu). Complex structures Try and use some sophisticated structures, such as si sentences (si c était possible, si je réussis, etc.), the perfect infinitive (après être allée, après avoir fait) and a phrase requiring a subjunctive, such as bien que (e.g. bien que je sois/ce soit). 3

4 Speaking tips To impress the examiner, you need to sound natural rather than rehearsed. A few tricks: smile, maintain eye contact with the teacher, use facial expressions, hand gestures and a few French gap fillers, e.g. Alors euh.... Now, write Alex s answer based on his notes (see below). Make it worth a grade A/A* by using a variety of tenses (especially conditional and future) as well as some sophisticated structures, with si, a perfect infinitive or a phrase requiring a subjunctive. Read it out loud, and perhaps record yourself. Are you happy with your performance? Question 4 «Quels sont tes projets pour l avenir?» Example answer and hints A Plus tard = chef pâtissier dans un grand restaurant en France. Start the sentence: Later on, if it was possible, I would like to be... using si + imperfect /conditional 4

5 B Avant stage l année dernière : jamais travailler avec chef Use the verb travailler in the pluperfect, to say what you had never done before. C Après aller en Irlande et faire stage dans restaurant, je sais que chef pâtissier = sans doute métier idéal pour moi (adorer cuisiner et faire gâteaux) Rephrase the sentence, using two perfect infinitives with aller and faire Use the conditional serait to talk about your ideal job. D levels L année prochaine : français, restauration et études commerciales pour les A Start the sentence Next year, if I do well in my GCSEs, I ll take... using si + present/future tense. 5
