9 I. Transport entre les aéroports et l hôtel Element Trois aéroports sont desservent New York : - John F. Kennedy (JFK) - LaGuardia - Newark Entre l aéroport John F. Kennedy et l hôtel Element: 1) Par le train/métro. Durée : environ 1h. - Depuis votre terminal, prendre la navette «AirTrain» en direction de «Jamaica Station» (environ 15mn de trajet ; compter quelques minutes en plus ou en moins en fonction de votre terminal d arrivée). Marcher (environ 3mn) en direction de la gare Jamaica. Prendre un des nombreux trains opérés par la compagnie Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) en direction de New York (Manhattan)/Penn Station (un train toutes les 10 à 15mn pour un trajet d environ 20mn). Site web : Attention : conservez bien votre ticket jusqu à destination car vous pouvez en avoir besoin pour sortir. - Descendre au terminus. Vous êtes à la gare de New York Penn Station située sur la 34 e rue, entre les 7 e et 8 e avenues. Une fois dehors, dirigez-vous à pieds en direction de la 39 e rue (39th St), à l angle de la 8 e Avenue (8th Ave). L hôtel se trouve à proximité immédiate, au numéro 311 sur la 39 e rue. Il faut compter environ mn à pieds. Un repère utile : la 39 e rue et l hôtel se situent une rue (street) au sud de la tour qui abrite le journal The New York Times. 2) Par taxi («cab»). Durée : variable en fonction de la circulation (de 45 à 2h). Le prix de $52 (hors péage pour autoroutes ou ponts) est fixe depuis l aéroport JFK, quelle que soit votre destination à New York. Il est habituel de laisser un pourboire (15-25%). Il est possible de payer avec une carte, mais il est conseiller d avoir du liquide en cas de problème. Vous pouvez demander une facture. Les taxis (de couleur jaune) attendent en file, ainsi que les clients à la sortie de votre terminal d aéroport. Un préposé en uniforme régule la distribution des taxis. Entre l aéroport La Guardia et l hôtel Element: 1) Par transports publics (bus + subway) Prendre le bus M60 en direction de «West Side Broadway st via 125 st». Vous aurez besoin d une «MetroCard» ou bien de l appoint à bord du bus. Demandez un transfer pour le subway (gratuit). Descendre à «Hoyt Avenue & 31 street». Marcher en direction de la station de l arrêt du subway «Astoria Boulevard» et prendre la ligne N/Q en direction de «Stillwell Ave-Coney Island». Descendre à l arrêt «42nd street Times Square». Dirigez-vous vers la 39 e rue West. L hôtel «Element» est au numéro 311 de la 39 e rue West. 2) Taxis («cab»). Durée : variable en fonction de la circulation (de 45mn à 2h). Contrairement aux taxis de l aéroport JFK, le tarif est «au compteur», ce qui peut coûter entre $50 et $75 en fonction de la circulation (hors péages et pourboire escompté). Il est conseillé de ne prendre que des taxis officiels jaunes ou verts. 2) Train : «Air Train» + «New Jersey Transit». Durée : au moins 45mn. Coût : environ $13. Prendre un ticket en direction de New York Penn Station aux automates de votre terminal (attention à ne pas prendre de ticket pour, ni ne descendre à un arrêt dont le nom sème la confusion: Newark Penn Station ). Prendre le monorail «Air Train» qui vous emmène de votre terminal à la station «Newark International Airport» du réseau ferré «New Jersey Transit». Consultez les écrans pour trouver la voie du prochain train en direction de «New York Penn Station». 30mn plus tard, vous êtes à la gare de New York Penn Station située sur la 34 e rue, entre les 7 e et 8 e avenues. 10

11 Attention : conservez bien votre ticket jusqu à destination. Dirigez-vous vers la 39 e rue. Se rendre aux sites de la conférence : New York University, CUNY, Columbia 1) Bus gratuits depuis l hôtel Element : Un service de transport par deux bus de 50 places chacun est gracieusement offert aux participants de la conférence le jeudi 6 mars (New York University) et le samedi 8 mars (Columbia University). Le vendredi 7 mars, les participants sont invités à assurer par eux-mêmes leur déplacement depuis l hôtel Element (voir indications pour le trajet plus loin dans ce document). Horaires des bus : - jeudi 6 mars (destination : New York University, Kimmel Center). Départ de l hôtel: 7h45 du matin précises. Retour des bus de New York University vers l hôtel à 19h15. - vendredi 7 mars : compte tenu de la relative proximité de CUNY- Graduate Center et de l hôtel, il est possible de marcher (15 mn) ou de prendre un taxi. - samedi 8 mars (destination : Columbia University). Départ de l hôtel : 8h20 du matin précises. Retour des bus de Columbia vers l hôtel à 19h45. 2) le taxi («cab») Comment obtenir l arrêt d un taxi à New York? - Le concierge de l hôtel peut appeler un taxi pour vous. - Autrement, il faut vous poster sur le trottoir de l avenue, lever ostensiblement le bras et attendre. Si la lumière du taxi est allumée, cela signifie qu il est libre (pas de lumière allumée? le taxi est occupé). En fonction des heures et des lieux, il faut parfois être patient. Les cartes de crédit sont acceptées. Il est toujours prudent d avoir des espèces. Pensez au pourboire escompté (en général 10 à 15%). Il est conseillé de ne prendre que des taxis officiels jaunes ou verts. Les avenues ont des sens de circulation : du sud vers le nord pour les chiffres pairs, du nord vers le sud pour les chiffres impairs. Pour les deux premiers jours, il vous faudra aller vers le sud (downtown). Par conséquent, pour aller à New York University (le 6 mars) et à The Graduate Center de CUNY (le 7 mars), il vous sera en principe plus facile de prendre un taxi sur la 9 e ou la 7 e avenue. Depuis l hôtel Element, qui se trouve à l angle de la 39 e rue et de la 8 e avenue, les taxis vont vers le nord (uptown), ce qui sera aisé pour le troisième jour de la conférence à Columbia University (le 8 mars). 12

13 3) Le métro (ou «subway») Si vous choisissez d emprunter le «subway», il est prudent d étudier votre trajet sur l un des sites ou applications indiquées au début de ce document On peut demander dans chaque guichet une carte gratuite du métro de New York. Un trajet en métro (subway) coût $2,50. Une carte rechargeable (MetroCard) est en vente dans les distributeurs automatiques dans chaque station. Pour chaque trajet, il faut retenir : - le numéro ou la lettre de la ligne - sa couleur correspondante - le terminus, ou, si vous restez à Manhattan, la direction (uptown ou downtown) Si vous n êtes pas familiers du subway de New York et que vous ne résidez pas à l hôtel Element, le taxi est peut-être une solution préférable, en particulier le jour de votre présentation (pensez à partager les taxis avec un ou des collègues). Jeudi 6 mars : se rendre en «subway» à New York University (NYU) Kimmel Center 60 Washington Square South New York NY (voir carte) Si vous ne prenez pas l un des bus gratuitement mis à votre disposition, vous pouvez vous rendez à NYU à partir des lignes et des arrêts suivants: - arrêt «Houston Street» (lignes rouge 1 et 2) - arrêt «West 4» (lignes bleues A, C, E et lignes oranges B, D, F, M) - arrêt «Astor Place» (lignes vertes 4 et 6) - arrêt «8th street/nyu» (lignes jaunes N, R) - arrêt «9 th Street» (PATH) Depuis l hôtel, si vous ne prenez pas l un des bus gratuits, prendre l une des trois lignes suivantes (lignes bleues): A, E ou C. Prenez la direction «downtown» qui est indiquée par des panneaux dans les couloirs et au-dessus des quais. Vérifiez le terminus de chaque ligne, indiqué sur chaque wagon : A : terminus Far Rockaway Mott ave E : terminus World Trade Center C : terminus Euclid Ave Descendre à l arrêt «West 4 St». A la sortie du métro, vous êtes sur la 6 e avenue (voir carte). Marchez vers l est en direction de Washington Square. Le Kimmel Center de New York University se trouve sur la bordure immédiate sud du parc Washington Square. 13

14 Un repère utile : le Kimmel Center est un bâtiment moderne qui se trouve quasiment en face de l Arc de Triomphe, de l autre côté du square, dans l axe de la 5 e avenue. Pour retourner à l hôtel Prenez la direction «uptown» qui est indiquée par des panneaux dans les couloirs et audessus des quais. Vérifiez le terminus de chaque ligne, indiqué sur chaque wagon : A : terminus Inwood 207st E : terminus Jamaica Center Parsons/Archer C : terminus 168st Pour ces trois lignes, descendre à l arrêt «New York Penn Station» ou «Port Authority Bus Terminal». Vendredi 7 mars 2014 : Se rendre à The Graduate Center de CUNY 365 Fifth Avenue New York, NY Lignes de subway : N, Q, R : arrêt «34th street - Herald street» 6 : arrêt «33 street» PATH: arrêt «33 street» 1, 2, 3 : arrêt «34 street - Penn Station» B, D, F, M : arrêt «42 street - Bryant Park» 7 : arrêt «5 ave» S, 4,5 : arrêt «Grand Central - 42 street» Le trajet en métro depuis l hôtel Element n est pas pratique. L alternative est le taxi. On peut également marcher depuis l hôtel Element pour se rendre à The Graduate Center (15-20mn). Voir carte. En sortant de la réception de l hôtel, tourner à gauche et marcher tout droit sur la 39 e rue. Traverser la 8 e avenue, puis la 7 e avenue et arriver à l intersection de la 39 e rue et de Broadway. Prendre alors Broadway sur la droite et marcher tout droit en direction de la 35 e rue. Arrivé (e) à la 35 e rue, prendre à gauche. Marcher sur la 35 e rue, traverser la 6 e avenue. A l intersection de la 35 e rue et de la 5 e avenue, prendre à droite. Vous arrivez au bâtiment situé au numéro 365 sur la 5 e avenue. Repère utile: The Graduate Center de CUNY se situe à proximité immédiate de l Empire State Building. 14

15 Samedi 8 mars 2014: Se rendre en subway à Columbia University 116th St and Broadway New York, NY Si vous ne prenez pas l un des bus gratuitement mis à votre disposition, sortez de la réception de l hôtel, tourner à gauche et marcher tout droit sur la 39 e rue. Traversez la 8 e avenue. A l intersection de la 39 e rue et de la 7 e avenue, prenez à gauche et remontez la 7 e avenue en direction de Times Square, situé à la 42 e rue. Entrez dans la station de métro «Times Sq 42 St». Prendre la ligne numéro 1 (ligne rouge) en direction de «uptown» (terminus indiqué sur les wagons: Van Cortlandt Park 242St). Descendre à la station «116th St Columbia University». Ne prenez pas les trains express des lignes 2 et 3 (lignes rouges) car ils ne s arrêtent pas à cet arrêt. Pour retourner à l hôtel Element: prendre le métro numéro 1 (ligne rouge) en direction de «downtown» (terminus indiqué sur les wagons: «South Ferry»). Descendre à la station «Times Square 42 St». 15

18 I. Transportation between the airports and the Element Hotel There are three main airports serving New York City: John F. Kennedy (JFK), LaGuardia, and Newark. Between JFK and the Element Hotel 1) By train or subway (allow for one hour of travel time): from your terminal take the AirTrain to Jamaica Station (in the borough of Queens, about 15 minutes travel time). Hold on to your ticket as you may need it for exiting the AirTrain. Walk about 3 minutes to Jamaica Station and take the Long Island Railroad train (LIRR) to New York (Manhattan) / Penn Station (there are numerous trains and it is about a 20 minute ride into the City). Visit for further information. Your LIRR ticket will be checked on the train. Once at Penn Station (the last stop on the line) you are at 34 th Street between 7 th and 8 th Avenues. Exit the station on the 8 th Avenue side (west). Once outside, walk uptown (north) to 39 th Street. The hotel is located near the corner of 39 th and 8 th on the north side of the street. A useful landmark is the New York Times building: the hotel is one street south. 2) By cab: A cab could take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on traffic. There is a fixed price of $52 (including bridge tolls). Tips are not included % is considered standard, depending on the length of the trip. You can use a credit card for payment and add the tip to the credit card. However, have cash ready in case your card does not work, which is possible if you are not using an American bank. You can ask for a receipt. The Yellow cab taxi stands are located outside the terminal. Visitors are advised to only take official yellow/green cabs. 3) By bus «NYC Airporter». Travel time: anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on traffic. From 5:00AM to 11:30PM. Price: $16. You can buy your tickets on line at: Information about stops can be found on the website. Get off at Port Authority Bus Terminal located at 42 nd Street between 8 th and 9th Avenues. Ask for the driver to direct you towards 8 th avenue and follow it south (downtown) toward 39 th Street. The hotel is a bit further west, near the corner of 39 th and 8 th. A useful landmark is the New York Times building: the hotel is just one street south. Turn right on 39 th Street, the hotel is to your right. Between La Guardia Airport and the Element Hotel: 1) By public transport (bus + subway) Take the M60 bus to West Side Broadway, 106 th Street via 125 th Street. You need a MetroCard or exact change on the bus. The fare includes a free transfer to the subway. Transfers register automatically on MetroCards, ask for a transfer if you pay with coins. Get off at Hoyt Avenue and 31 st Street ; ask the driver to point out the stop to you and to direct you toward the subway. Take the N / Q line train at the Astoria Boulevard station and go towards Manhattan in the Stillwell Avenue-Coney Island direction. Get 18

19 off at 42 nd Street-Times Square. Go south (downtown) to 39 th Street and then take a right (west). The Element is just west of 8 th Avenue, 311 West 39 th Street. 2) By cab. Travel time: anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on traffic. Unlike JFK, the price from LaGuardia to Manhattan is metered and as such is variable depending on traffic and distance. You still must add tip and tolls to the final price and you can use your credit card. However, have cash ready in case your card does not work, which is possible if you are not using an American bank. Visitors are advised to only take official yellow/green cabs. 3) By bus «NYC Airporter». Travel time: anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on traffic. From 5:00AM to 11:30PM. Price: $13. Ask for the driver to direct you towards 8 th avenue and follow it south (downtown) toward 39 th Street. The hotel is just a bit further west, near the corner of 39 th and 8 th. A useful landmark is the New York Times building: the hotel is just one street south. Between Newark Airport and the Element Hotel 1) By Cabs. Unlike JFK, the price from Newark to Manhattan is metered and as such is variable depending on traffic and distance. Count on spending anywhere from $50-75 depending on traffic. Don t forget to include tip and tolls. Visitors are advised to only take official yellow/green cabs. 2) By Train: Air Train + New Jersey Transit. Travel time: at least 45 minutes. Cost: around $13. Website: Buy a ticket for Penn Station New York at the ticket vending machines in your terminal (be careful, there is a Penn Station in Newark, which you do not want). Hold on to your ticket as it lets you in and out of the monorail and on to the train to New York. Take the monorail Air Train, from your terminal to the Newark International Airport station of the NJ Transit trains. Consult the schedules on the screens to find the time and track number for the next train to New York Penn Station Thirty minutes later you will arrive at Penn Station, which is on 34 th Street between 7 th and 8 th Avenues. Exit Penn Station on the 8 th Avenue side and go south (downtown) to 39 th Street. The hotel is just west (to the right) of 39 th Street and 8 th avenue. It s a short minutes walk from Penn Station to the hotel. 3) By Bus: Newark Airport Express There is a bus every 15 minutes from terminals A, B and C. Price: $16. Travel time, at least 1 hour, depending on traffic. Get off the bus at Port Authority Bus Terminal, located at 42 nd Street between 8 th and 9 th avenues. Ask the bus driver to point you to 8 th avenue and then walk south (downtown) to 39 th street. Turn right on 39 th street and the Element Hotel is on the north side of the street. A useful landmark is the New York Times building, which will be on your left: the hotel is one street south. It is a short 10 minutes walk from Penn Station to the hotel. 19

Transportation between the bus and rail stations and the Element Hotel 1) From Port Authority Bus Terminal Walking: under 10 minutes Exit Port Authority on the 8 th avenue side of the terminal. Go south on (towards downtown) 8 th avenue to 39 th street. Look for the New York Times building on your left between 41 st and 42 nd streets as a landmark. 2) From Penn Station Walking: approx. 15mn. Exit Penn Station on the 8 th Avenue side. Go south on 8 th avenue (towards downtown) to 39 th Street. Turn right on 39 th Street and you will find the hotel on the right, close to the corner of 8 th avenue. Look for the New York Times building on your left between 41 st and 42 nd streets as a landmark. 3) From Grand Central Station Use the Shuttle or S train which shuttles from Grand Central to Times Square; there is only one stop in either direction. III. Traveling to the conference sites: NYU, Graduate Center-CUNY, Columbia University 1) Free buses from the Element Hotel Bus Schedule: - Thursday, March 6: buses to New York University, Kimmel Center will leave the hotel at precisely 7:45 AM. Buses will return to the Element 7:15 PM. - Friday, March 7. Since the Graduate Center, CUNY is only a 15-minute walk, there will be no bus leaving from the hotel. We invite you to take advantage of its relative proximity to the Element (see map). If you do not wish to walk, you can take a taxi from the Element. - Saturday, March 8: buses to Columbia will leave the hotel at precisely 8:20 AM. They will return to the Element at 7:45 PM. 2) Taxis or Cabs Taxi or cab etiquette: in New York City it is easy to hail a cab on the street (just hold out your arm). If the light on top of the cab is on, the cab is available, if the light s off, it s not. You can also ask staff at the Element to hail a cab for you. Give the driver the address of your destination. 21 The avenues of Manhattan go either uptown (north) or downtown (south). The even numbered avenues run north, the uneven numbered avenues run south. Streets run eastwest: even numbered streets run east and odd numbered streets. For the first two days of the conference you have to go south (downtown). To arrive at New York University (March 6), it is best to hail a cab on 7 th or 9 th avenue. To arrive at the Graduate Center, CUNY, take an even-numbered cross-town street toward 5 th Avenue. On the 3 rd day you ll need to travel uptown to Columbia University. Take a cab on 8 th avenue to Broadway and 116 th Street. 3) Subway If you take the subway, it is a good idea to plan your trip and know which trains you are taking and their directions (North or South). The subway costs $2.50 per ride, which includes all transfers within the subway and one transfer from subway to bus. You need to buy a MetroCard (available at all stations). 22 From the Element Hotel, if you are not using one of the free buses, take one of these three lines: the blue lines A, E or C. Go downtown as indicated on panels above the train tracks on the subway platforms. The terminus for A train is Far Rockaway-Mott Ave, the terminus for the E train is World Trade Center, the terminus for the C train is Euclid Ave. Exit the train (A, E or C) at West 4th Street (see map). The Kimmel Center is a modern building almost directly facing the Arc de Triomphe on the opposite side of the square, where Fifth Avenue ends. To return to the Element Hotel Take the train uptown. Head south (downtown) to 34 th Street, then East to Fifth Avenue. Your landmark is the Empire State Building (just look up); the Grad Center is diagonally opposite the Empire State, on the Northeast corner of 34 th and Fifth. There is no good subway line linking the Element Hotel to the Graduate Center. Another choice is to take a taxi. 22

23 Saturday March 8, 2014: Traveling to Columbia University 116th St and Broadway New York, NY Subway station is on West 116 th Street and Broadway (see map) Subway: Turn left when leaving the hotel and walk east on 39 th street, cross 8 th avenue and then turn left on 7 th avenue. Enter the Times Square, 42 nd street station and take the number 1 (red) uptown local train (terminus Van Cortlandt Park-242 nd street). Exit at 116 th Street- Columbia University. DO NOT take the 2 or 3 express trains on the red line as they do not make the same stops after 96 th street. Returning to the hotel: take the number 1 train (red) going downtown, terminus South Ferry. Exit train at Times Square-42 nd Street. 23
