School camps have been a highlight this term, with many students learning about team-building, cooperation and survival skills as well as having the opportunity to consolidate new friendships. Year 7 students went to the Sports and Recreation Centre at Jindabyne, Year 6 to Long Beach for the first time and Year 3 to Birragai. Camps are a time to value each other and to engage in outdoor activities together. To this end many tired but SCHOOL TERM DATES 2014 Term 1 3 February 11 April Term 2 28 April 4 July Term 3 21 July 26 September Term 4 13 October 17 December IMPORTANT DATES 5 April French Exchange departs 8 April Secondary Parent/Teacher Interviews 9 April Year 4 Thinking Carnival 9 April Secondary Parent/Teacher Interviews 11 April Primary Reports Distributed 11 April Last Day Term 1 28 April Term 2 Commences 30 April-2 May Year 4 Camp happy students returned to school after each camp. A special thank you to the teachers who accompanied the students. These camps are a huge responsibility for them and one which they take very seriously. We are fortunate to have such willing staff at Telopea Park School as such extra-curricular activities enrich the education of the students who participate. Swimming carnivals have been happy events for both sectors of the school this term with many students then going on to represent the school at the ACT level. Congratulations to these students! The Primary Cross Country Carnival was another occasion to show-case athletic ability and team-building. Our secondary students will leave for the exchange visit to Lycée Internationale de Grenoble, France, on Saturday 5 April. Again thank you to Patricia Blumstein (Head of Languages) together with Baba Alhadji (French teacher in the Australian Stream) for their willingness to accompany the students and for taking the responsibility of the students on the exchange. This will be an experience that the students will remember forever. I have pleasure in announcing two new Board members for this year. Nick Rothwell is the new teacher representative and Philippa Evans, Year 9, is the student representative. We thank them for their commitment to the school. The school was invited to host an Australian Citizenship Ceremony for the Department of Immigration this term. It was our pleasure to do so on Tuesday 18 th March. This was a learning opportunity for our students as they witnessed what citizenship means for Australians as well as joining with us to celebrate one of our teachers, Mr Baba Alhadji, taking citizenship. Last week we hosted the annual Francophonie Assembly. This was another opportunity for Telopea students to learn about the Francophonie countries, the importance of French culture and to celebrate the mission of the Francophonie Organisation: the development of democracy; mutual understanding between nations; solidarity; a strong focus on education; and the French language. Ten Ambassadors and one High Commissioner were present together at school on that day quite an achievement which has probably never happened before in the school! Each Assembly was a time to show-case the excellence that abounds in the school as well as opportunities for students to learn. A sincere thank you to teachers, parents and students who were involved.
Last week we also hosted a visit of a French MP, M.Thierry Mariani, in charge of French Citizens Abroad, as well as a visit from M.Patrick Ténèze representing the AEFE (Agency for French Education Abroad). This week several teachers in the primary sector were undergoing the usual French inspections. We welcomed M.Bruno Delvalée, Inspector, to our school. Harmony Day was celebrated in primary and secondary assemblies with primary students collecting for the Snowy Hydro SouthCare Helicopter Service and donating $ This was an excellent way to demonstrate to our students that we can be participating members of our community and assist those in need. Thank you to the students and parents/carers who contributed to this very worthwhile cause again this year. Secondary Reports were sent home with students on Thursday 3 April followed by parent/teacher meetings in week 10 Tuesday 8 April (4-6.30pm) and Wednesday 9 April (6-8pm). Please ask your children for their reports. Once again the on-line booking system (PTO) will be in operation. Any parent/carer who does not have access to this service can phone the front office on and ask for interviews to be booked for them. Primary Reports will be sent home with your children on the last day of term, Friday 11 April. A Health Promoting Schools Forum will also be held in week 10 on Tuesday 8 April at 6.45pm to 7.45pm (after the first parent/teacher interviews). Is your child safe on line? If you are not sure, please attend this very important forum where you will hear from professionals in the field. The topic is one which should interest all parents of students K-12. Year 9 students have been working hard in preparation for the Brevet Blanc this week, the trial examinations preparing them for the Brevet (DNB), the external French examinations, to be held next term. We wish them well. A group of Year 5 students attended a presentation ceremony at the ACT Legislative Assembly this week to receive a French Atlas from the Speaker of the Assembly, Ms Vicki Dunn. This was a generous gift and this special atlas will be available for students to use. Secondary parents/carers have received information about the provision of information communication technologies (ICT) in the school and have been asked to return their permission notes. Primary parents will be receiving these notes this week. We ask that you respond as soon as possible. This will enable the school to use accredited websites that support learning in the school. I wish our school community happy, safe and relaxing holidays at the end of term. School holidays are times for students and teachers to refresh and prepare for the following term. Page 2 of 11
Sincères salutations Kerrie Blain Principale HIGH SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS Years 7 and 9 students will be sitting the test for the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2014 in May. Firstly, on the 14 th March, during Pastoral Care, students were issued with a challenge: to take a photo of their Pastoral Care group, and write a Vision Statement. The photo and statement needed to reflect the message of Harmony Day, which is to celebrate Cultural Diversity On 21 st March, Harmony Day, we had a Mufti Day where students were encouraged to wear national costume or national colours. We also had a special assembly with Kate Danilova (Year 9) performing an Egyptian dance, the Year 7 dance class performing an Afro-Carribean number, and an original composition by our very own Telopea Park School Mariachi Band. This entertaining assembly then wrapped up with an intoxicating performance from Drumassault, featuring our very own Reuben Owusu, in Year 10. 9:11 Harmony Day Vision ~Statement~ To want is to care To care is to commit To commit is to say WE WILL We WANT Harmony Day To be every day Language Teachers Abroad Two of our language teachers were fortunate to receive Endeavour Language Teacher Fellowships from the Australian Government this January and have undertaken an in-country program to build on their skills in the language classroom. Ms Power (Spanish) and Ms Avard (German) participated in a three-week program in Spain and Germany respectively. They both had amazing experiences and have come back with many stories and resources to share with their students. Page 4 of 11
Düsseldorf is a vibrant city and the German people are always very welcoming to new people in their cities. My highlight would definitely be visiting a German school and seeing German students just as enthusiastic to learn English as my students are to learn German. My host family s cooking was amazing too! The Spanish people are famed for their hospitality and they did not disappoint! Salamanca is a beautiful town, full of spectacular architecture. Visiting Madrid was a wonderful experience, especially going to Museo del Prado and seeing Picasso s Guernica in person. And the food was delicioso, especially the tapas and paella. They would love to share their experiences with you, so don t be afraid to quiz them on all things German and Spanish. Gold and the Incas: Lost Worlds of Peru The two Year 10 Spanish classes braved the cold and rain on Friday of Week 8 to attend an educational visit to the Gold and the Incas exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia. We enjoyed viewing and learning about some priceless artefacts on loan from Peru and about the multiplicity of cultures which existed in Peru before the Incas became the dominant culture, themselves succeeded by the Spanish in the 16 th century. The exhibition is open until the 21 st of April, and is well worth a visit! Mrs Consola and Miss Power Some students reviews of the exhibition: The Gold and the Incas exhibition was very artistic and a big learning curve in helping us understand South American cultures - Eli and Donald The Gold and the Incas exhibition was amazing, it has made us more interested in learning more about South America and we would like to visit South America in the future, especially Machu Picchu! - Alix and Josie Indonesian excursion and dance workshop in week 10 It is hoped that all Indonesian students will go on an excursion to the Indonesian Embassy in week 10 to visit the cultural exhibition there, and attend a dance workshop. On 21 March, with 20 other ACT Indonesian teachers I attended an all-day Professional Learning session at the ANU. There were useful presentations and exchanges of ideas on topics such as the use of ICT in the classroom, and the teaching of different cultural perspectives. We also discussed ways of addressing sensitive issues in Australia s relations with Indonesia, where these arise in the classroom, such as people smugglers/asylum seekers, spying, Schapelle Corby and so on. Exchange to France: Saturday 5 th April to Monday 12 th May Year 10 students studying French are leaving on Saturday to Paris and Grenoble for five weeks of immersion with the Lycée International de Grenoble Europole. The French students will visit Australia for six weeks: from Tuesday 24 th June to Saturday 2 nd August. Next year s Exchange will be advertised at the beginning of Term 3. Page 5 of 11
Secondary Library We have had a busy and enjoyable first term in the library. We are often full to overflowing and happy to encourage students in their learning. Some of our notices and special events so far this year are below: Parents: ACT Library Cards for All Students Please! We encourage every parent to ensure that their child has an ACT Library card with a pin number. The students are being taught to use the electronic resources held by the libraries, and your child will be disadvantaged in their research assessments if he or she does not have access to these wonderful resources. Please get your child a card with a pin today. Joining online takes only a few minutes of your time, and the library card will be mailed to your address within a few days. Please take a few moments now to join: Students should bring their library cards with them to school along with their school ID cards. Thank you! February was Library Lovers Month We celebrated Library Lovers month with a special display and special events. The heart theme was everywhere hearts hanging from the ceiling, a massive heart made out of books, all because we love our library! Students wrote the titles of their favourite books in French and English on paper hearts and covered two giant pinboards with their recommendations. Many students also took a chance on borrowing giftwrapped books and had a blind date with a book. We could hardly keep the books on the shelves! A la Folie! Francophonie in March Our display this month celebrates the French language, and all of the countries where French is spoken. Every year, the French Ministry of Culture features 10 French words as part of the Francophonie celebration. This year s words are somewhat sillysounding, made-up, or onomotopaeic words on the theme of folly, craziness and fun. The theme is A la Folie and there are humorous books on display in French and English. If you come to the library, you will see a number of silly creatures representing the 10 words, hanging and spinning from the ceiling. If your child is in the French stream or studying French, ask them to explain the following words (warning, it will be a challenge for them!): hurluberlu, faribole, ouf, charivari, à tire-larigot, ambiancer, s enlivrer, timbré, tohu-bohu, zigzag. Page 6 of 11
Kids Lit Quiz We took three teams of motivated year 7 readers to the Kids Lit Quiz in February, where the students competed in a quiz format on all aspects of books and reading. All three teams competed admirably in questions on a range of book-related topics, and everyone won at least one or two books as prizes. Telopea Team 2, who called themselves The Game of Tomes, took home the second place trophy. They were only a few points behind the team that will represent Australia in the world finals in England. Our teams did very well and enjoyed themselves immensely! Well done teams! Student Book Reviews Published on Website Our students continue to review books for publication online on the Yarr-a website. Anyone who wishes to contribute should see Mrs. Rapp in the library. We regularly receive new books to review, and would be happy to extend this opportunity to more students. See the website for students reviews: Page 7 of 11
Chief Minister s Reading Challenge The Chief Minister s Reading Challenge is on again for students in Years 7 and 8. Please encourage your children to read regularly and keep noting the books they have read on their reading record forms. All students who complete the challenge to read 12 books by September will be recognised by the Chief Minister with a certificate of achievement. Happy reading! Da Vinci Decathlon The library is overflowing with enthusiasm during recess with over 60 students in years 7 and 8, who are busy building paper towers, breaking codes, writing poetry, contemplating philosophical questions, performing plays, reading maps, figuring math problems, exploring complex scientific issues, and so on. It s an exuberant, noisy celebration of intellectual pursuits in preparation for the annual Da Vinci Decathlon in June. Students will continue to train during Enrichment and Recess next term honing their Engineering skills at Questacon Technology Learning Centre and mastering other skills with their capable year 9 tutors in the library. Here s to our future Leonardo Da Vincis! Books in Other Languages We are always seeking good books suitable for our students in the languages we teach at Telopea Park School: Japanese, Spanish, German, Indonesian, French, and Italian. If you have any books that you might be interested in donating, please contact Mrs. Rapp in the library. We are also seeking to build a collection of books in the mother tongues of our students, so would be happy to consider any other suitable books in other languages as well. Books must be in very good condition. Thank you! PRIMARY NEWS It is so hard to believe that we are nearing the end of Term 1 already. This term has been full of exciting events and activities. No doubt, the students and teachers are all ready for a two week break to recharge their batteries. Francophonie Celebrations The primary students were treated to two special Francophonie Assemblies in Week 8. It was great to hear the beautiful singing of the choir, under the leadership of our talented music teacher, Susan Cribb. The special guests were complementary of the organisation by Claire Harding and her team of dedicated teachers. Francophonie Week was certainly celebrated with much fanfare at our school. Year 3 Camp The Year 3 camp to Birrigai was a fantastic experience for the students and teachers; despite the wet weather. The students enjoyed themselves by participating enthusiastically in all the activities as they were focussed on Environmental Awareness and Team Building. The staff at Birrigai were very impressed at the students proficiency in both French and English that they asked the students to sing a French song for them. The students chose to sing We are the Children and they sang it beautifully; much to the delight of the staff. Camps are a valuable experience for students. They are not possible without the willingness of teachers to take time away from their own families to accompany and look after their students. When your child goes on a camp, please thank the teachers for giving up their time and for bringing your child home safely. We sincerely thank Michael Ellis, Sujatha Mathe, Frederique Rabaud- Fremy and Patricia Giraud for taking on the huge responsibility in taking students away overnight and for their wonderful care of our Year 3 students. Harmony Day The Harmony Day fundraiser, when students wore a national costume or something orange, raised $ to help keep the Snowy Hydro SouthCare Rescue Helicopter in the air and saving lives. Thank you to everyone who donated to this worthy cause. Term One Progress Reports All students in Years One to Six will receive their Term One Progress Reports on Friday 11 April (the last day of Term One). Please check your child s bag for this report. If an interview has been requested by the teachers, please make an appointment to see them early in Term 2 via the Communication Book. Kindergarten students will not receive a report this term. Year Four Thinking Carnival This annual event for students in Year Four will take place on Wednesday 9 April (Week 10). Students have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge every year to date and we believe our current Year Four students will equally find the day inspiring and thought provoking. Kindergarten 2015 Preparations are well underway for the students applying to Kindergarten for The information night was very well attended and many important questions answered about the new procedure for enrolment. If you know anyone who would like their child to apply for enrolment into Kindergarten 2015, please refer them to our school website for details. There are now two important steps in the enrolment process that need to be followed carefully. Applications close on Friday 30 May Page 8 of 11
