Materials Used: anticipatory set, guided notes, guided and independent practice, listening script, answer keys Estimated Time: 50 Lesson Overview: 1. Students are introduced to reading public transportation schedules. 2. Students review converting and expressing time using the 24 hour clock. 3. Students reinforce learning with reading and listening activities. Procedures: Anticipatory Set: (10 ) 1. Teacher reviews reading comprehension strategies prior to beginning the Anticipatory Set: Read the questions prior to the article so that you know what information you are looking for. Match key words in the questions to key words in the text. Combine information from the reading with your own prior knowledge to support your findings. 2. Students read an article regarding road closings and detours for the SNCF. 3. After a sufficient amount of time, teacher reviews answers and checks for understanding.

Teacher reviews how to express and convert 12 hour and 24 hour times. 3. Teacher reviews the terms aller (partir) and retour (arriver). {going (to leave) and returning (to arrive)} 4. Students use the sample schedule to answer the questions at the bottom of the Guided Notes. Students must convert 24 hour terms into 12 hour terms in order to select the best answer. 5. Teacher reviews answers and checks for understanding. Teacher allows for student questions. Guided Practice: (10 ) 1. Teacher states the purpose of the Guided Practice: to understand and use schedules for public transportation. 2. Students use a bus schedule from Grenoble, France to answer the questions at the bottom of the Guided Practice. Students must convert 24 hour terms into 12 hour terms in order to select the best answer. 3. Teacher notes how several busses run the same route at different times of the day and points out the related use of ordinal numbers in the questions. Teacher explains the difference between departure times and arrival times in the chart. 4. After a sufficient amount of time, teacher reviews answers and checks for understanding. Teacher allows for student questions. Independent Practice: (15 ) 1. Teacher states the purpose of the Independent Practice: to understand schedules for public transportation. 2. Teacher reads departure and arrival times for several stops along a metro route in Paris, France. Teacher reads all times using the 24 hour format. 3. Students fill in the schedule for all departures and arrivals by converting each 24 hour time into 12 hour including am and pm. 4. Teacher reviews answers and checks for understanding. Teacher allows for student questions. Closure: (5 ) 1. Teacher asks students to reflect on how well they might be able to use public transportation overseas by answering the question at the bottom of the Independent Practice. 2.
