P St-Martin d'hères (France) Monsieur, Nous avons l'honneur de vous inviter à participer au Dixième Congrès International de Météorologie Alpine qui se tiendra à Grenoble-Saint-Martin d'hères, Isère, France, du 2 au 6 septembre Ces dates incluent en principe deux journées d'excursions. Les organisateurs souhaitent que les communications portent sur les trois thèmes principaux suivants : 1. Climatologie synoptique (les communications touchant aux conditions synoptiques des chutes de neige sont spécialement souhaitées). 2. Les températures en montagnes. 3. Micro-climatologie, spécialement dans ses relations avec la végétation. Chaque séance comportera, comme lors de notre dernière rencontre à Brigue, un rapport introductif suivi de communications brèves. Celles-ci pourront être prononcées en français, italien ou allemand. Pour nous permettre la traduction et la diffusion préalables en langue française des résumés des communications qui seront faites en italien ou en allemand, il serait indispensable que ces résumés (150 mots au maximum) nous parviennent avant le 15 mai Les communications elles-mêmes pourront être accompagnées de projections de documents par epidiascope ou diapositives 5x5. Une deuxième circulaire vous sera adressée début février Elle vous donnera le programme détaillé du Congrès. (VGW), 6 Frankfurt/Main Theodor-Heuss-Allee Téléfon (0611) Après le vif succès remporté par le congrès et l'exposition «EAU. 63», il a été décidé l'ouverture d'un nouveau Congrès-Exposition qui aura lieu à Berlin, du 1 au 6 avril L'exposition se résumera en deux parties : l'une aura trait aux idées virtuelles, l'autre aux conceptions pratiques et industrielles. Le congrès et l'exposition se tiendront, comme en 1963 sous le haut patronage de Monsieur le Président, Heinrich Liibke. Les organisateurs sont la 106

3 «Berliner Ausstellungen» en collaboration avec le «Verein Kongress und Ausstellung Wasser Berlin e.v.» et ses membres : les unions professionnelles de l'économie de l'eau, l'union nationale de l'industrie allemande «Bundesverband der deutschen Industrie», les unions directrices communales. La vaste exposition de 1968 donnera aux experts comme au public un aperçu général sur les possibilités offertes par toutes les branches industrielles s'occupant de l'exploitation de l'eau et mettra en valeur l'aide technique que proposent les industries annexes. La partie virtuelle de l'exposition sera aussi, pour une grande partie du public, un pôle d'attraction. Tout, dans cette exposition, intéressera le spécialiste comme le profane et donnera lieu à réfléchir. De nombreux modèles impressionnants et d'innombrables pièces d'exposition montreront et mettront en lumière la signification de l'eau non seulement dans l'économie, le trafic, le gain d'énergie, les constructions fluviales mais aussi dans tout ce qui touche aux vacances, au repos, à la santé. Toujours dans le cadre du congrès, quinze exposés expliqueront, de façon générale, le sens et le développement futur de l'économie de l'eau. Professional fields: hydrology, social science, earth science, plant science, animal science, soil science, irrigation, meteorology, economics, and political science. 5 June - Thursday Field trips in the vicinity of Tucson, Arizona 6 June - Friday Morning: Working Group Sessions Six sessions, organized by geographic areas, to present papers and provide discussion by area specialists on the subjects of the first two plenary sessions. HUNGARY In Connection with the International Hydrological Decade an international post-graduate course for hydrologists started on January 15, 1968 on "Hydrological Methods for Developing Water Resources Management". The course is organized by the Hungarian National Water Authority and the Research Institute for Water Resources Development, and sponsored by UNESCO; it is of a half year duration; lectures are delivered in English. This course, the second of its kind, counts 18 participants come from the following countries: Burma, Chile, Columbia, Hungary, India, Iraq, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New-Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sudan and Syria. * * * I n October 1968 the Hungarian Academy of Sciences will organize a Symposium on "Current Problems of River Training and Sediment Movement ", the programme of which is as follows: 1. River training a) Basic principles and methods of modern river training. b) Effect of sediment conditions on the development of river training methods. 2. Sediment movement a) Theory of the boundary conditions of sediment movement. b) Influence of sediment conditions on river bed morphology. 3. Sedimentation of watercourses and lakes and ponds. 109

F) Organisations Nationales National Organizations 1. AMERICAN EVAPOTRANSPIRATION CONFERENCE The Proceedings of the Conference "Evapotranspiration and Its Role in Water Resources Management" held in Chicago, Illinois on December 5-6, 1966 is now available at a cost of $5.00 each through American Society of Agricultural Engineers 420 Main Street St. Joseph, Michigan This conference was cosponsored by the following societies: American Meteorological Society American Society of Civil Engineers Soil Science Society of America U. S. Committee of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage It contains an excellent summarization of recent advances in the field of évapotranspiration. 2. HYDROLOGY PROGRAM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE The Department of Soil and Water Science at the University of New Hampshire offers the B. S. degree in soil science and hydrology and the M. S. degree in soil and water science with options in soil physics, soil chemistry, and hydrology. The Department was formed three years ago in response to the rapid increase of interest in water resources and changing land use patterns. The academic program at the undergraduate level is designed to provide, in addition to a good general education, sound training in the basic sciences and mathematics. Departmental offerings are limited to those courses which are necessary to provide an introduction to the majors offered. For example, a hydrology major need take only one introductory course and three advanced courses in the Department. The M. S. program is flexible enough so that considerable attention can be given to individual needs. A suitable background is required in mathematics, chemistry, and physics. Here, of course, more specialization is allowed, but a student is encouraged to take courses from one 110
