1 français AP, le travail d été les vacances du petit Nicolas by Goscinny. The goal of this work is NOT to be able to tell me 100% what the story was about, so no English is to be involved. The goal is to keep up your French skills and build your vocabulary. AP will require quick reading skills. This summer work will help you keep your skills sharp. You have a sheet for each story you are to read. Six stories are for summer reading and nine additional stories will be given as homework the first semester. I gave you these last nine stories in case you want to work ahead. (NB: stories 5,6, & 13 have been omitted.) A: sujet = les vacances en famille = summer reading All students will read these six stories and fill out the appropriate sheet. We will start the semester reading, discussing, and giving presentations on these stories to get you back in the habit of expressing yourself in French. 1. C est papa qui décide 2. On est rentrés B : sujet = la colonie de vacances de Nicolas = semester reading During the first semester, you will give a presentation on the stories below. (After we practice giving presentations with our summer reading texts, you will feel comfortable with what is expected of you.) Although you will only be giving presentations on the stories assigned to you, you are still expected to have read and be able to answer questions during someone else s presentation. 9. il faut être raisonable =Joséphine 10. le depart =Monique 11. 2 Remember to follow these steps for successful reading : 1. Read the title and look at any pictures. 2. Read the story TWICE without stopping (to look up words, etc). 3. Read the story and this time jot down a few words (not more than 5) that you feel you need to know to understand the story more (or that are useful to you). These 5 words you can look up. Jot them down on the story sheet. 4. Read the story aloud. 5. Write down a few (3-5) pertinent test questions to ask someone. 6. Then explain the basic storyline and why the story is funny to you. Be sure to push yourself with your grammar! Your audience is someone who knows who the characters are, but does not know the story. Be clear and concise. DO NOT use dialogues, and give me FR 4 level writing! Now, put PN away. Think about what you learned from that story and be thankful you have the capacity to learn a language! Spend the next few days talking about the story aloud while you are walking, washing your hair, or playing with your dog. I m sure your pet would love to hear about Nicolas and his adventures! After a few days, start over with the next story. IF you follow the above steps, especially retelling the story over a few days, you will see your French skills improve drastically. However, if you choose to read the stories quickly before the fall semester starts just to finish the work, you do not truly want to improve your language skills and should rethink taking French AP. Each summer reading handout is worth 50pts each = 300pts total (semester story handouts will be graded separately)
