To valorize the 130 existing spatial datasets described (registered) in the ISO compliant metadata management system To exchange data inside and outside the administrative authorities of the Walloon Region (WR) In the past, copy on CD-Rom, data duplication and many access points At present, authentic source of data and one GeoPortal To join the Walloon e-government initiative : Cartography, 1 of the 20 topics of the WR e-gov Portal Spatial information and Geo Web Services, transversal tools to answer questions of the citizens, companies and public authorities through their respective life lines The main goal is to sustain the geoinformation market and to enhance the access, the availability and the use of public geoinformation from regional to local level for all users

3 Purpose of the Geoportal (2) Current functionalities : General information and awareness raising Access to spatial datasets metadata and to uniform licensing models for data dissemination Displaying of the reference datasets via HTML browser and secured downloading of these data (thematic data in progress) WEB links to other spatial resources available in WR (pilot applications (geological map service...), atlas, static maps, dynamic maps (Trafiroute) ) Dissemination of the results of the InfraSIG project (Guide of good practices, recommendations...) Calendar of the geographic events (colloquia, conferences, trainings ) Web links to geographic information Purpose of the Geoportal (3) Applications : Metadata management system compliant with the ISO and pre v6 standards Walloon metadata profile User-friendly coding interfaces XML import/export tools in accordance with pre-iso V6 Multi-criterion search and retrieval information interfaces Multi-servers indexing tools and MUltilingual GI Retrieval Engine to find metadata (ISO compliant or not) on multiple servers (MUGIRE)

15 Purpose of the Geoportal (4) Funding : Internal funding The Geoportal is an achieved work from the InfraSIG project The purpose of the InfraSIG project is to define and develop a spatial data infrastructure to meet the needs and requirements of all users in the WR First 2 years ( ), InfraSIG project = 1.8 mio EUR Geoportal = (hard & soft) ( 430 M/D) + 50 M/D Metadata Management System = (350 M/D) + 80 M/D + data collection ( > 1M/Y) Organisational issues (1) Exchange with other regional and local levels : In a first phase, based on metadata access (Walloon profile, import/export XML, MUGIRE)and CD-ROM + download In a second phase, based on WEBGIS applications compliant with OGC specifications (WMS, WFS) and web services (W3C) In a last phase, based on common reference and thematic data models and a neutral transfer format (INTERLIS) Exchange of experiences with Flanders and Brussels Region and Cadastral Federal Authority on metadata and reference data modelling in order to consider the setting up of shared data infrastructure Agreement with Flanders to develop a common metadata portal based on MUGIRE : multi-servers indexing tools and MUltilingual GI Retrieval Engine for finding information on multiple servers MUGIRE, an intermediate solution for the European Geoportal to retrieve metadata not compliant with a common standard or profile Exchange of experiences with CNIG (France) on metadata
