L édition 2014 de la Billabong Pro Tahiti, étape du championnat du monde professionnel de surf qui s est tenue dans cette petite localité en août dernier, a marqué l Histoire et les esprits. Elle a été qualifiée de plus belle compétition de surf jamais organisée! Un moment historique qui intervient, presque jour pour jour, quatorze ans après le choc de la vague du Millénaire, une géante de 15 mètres surfée par l Hawaïen Laird Hamilton en l an 2000, et qui avait révolutionné le surf moderne. Ainsi, dans ce laboratoire du «bout de la route», aux confins de la presqu île de Tahiti se réinventent les sports de glisse. Se dévoile aussi l avenir avec la révolution des images : des drones aériens effectuent des prises de vues inédites alors que les mini-caméras équipant les athlètes plongent le spectateur au cœur de l action. Where are we going?) was his artistic legacy, a work of incredible power created during his last stay in our islands from 1807 to Today, Gauguin s paintings, exposed in the greatest museums in the world, are still very much appreciated. 26 26 Capitale de nos îles et cœur de Tahiti, Papeete dévoile par son architecture étonnante et bigarrée une riche histoire, celle de la Polynésie française avec son métissage, ses évolutions et révolutions. Découverte. Texte / Text : Benjamin Lugrezy Photos / Pictures : philippe bacchet L architecture polynésienne a connu de profonds changements à partir de la deuxième moitié du XIX e siècle, notamment avec l aménagement urbain de la ville de Papeete pour des raisons militaires et commerciales. Mais remontons encore plus loin dans le temps! Au tout début du XIX e, l arrivée des missionnaires chrétiens dans nos îles, fut synonyme de grands bouleversements architecturaux. Ces derniers n étaient visibles que par les édifices religieux comme les cathédrales, églises et temples. Cependant, ces bâtisses utilisaient encore des matériaux issus de la nature tels que le corail, la fibre naturelle ou la terre. Au niveau de l habitat, le bois fut pendant longtemps le matériau de prédilection des Polynésiens. Son abondance et sa diversité dans la plupart des îles en faisaient une ressource disponible pour le peuple qui misait sur les grandes ouvertures et sur les pilotis, dès lors que l habitation était située dans une zone proche de l océan ou d une rivière, et donc très humide. Les conditions climatiques et l industrialisation polynésiennes ont cependant conduit à l utilisation de nouveaux matériaux, laissant ainsi place au béton, à la tôle et autres. La ville de Papeete est loin d être ce que pourrait s attendre à voir un visiteur débarquant sur l île de Tahiti pour la première fois. Elle n a pour son essentiel vraisemblablement rien à voir avec les clichés des habitations polynésiennes de type fare, utilisés pour la promotion de la Polynésie française à travers le monde. Il faut malgré tout lui laisser sa chance! Derrière cette première impression qu elle peut laisser d une ville désorganisée où chaque construction semble suivre son propre fonctionnement sans se soucier de ce qui l entoure, elle peut réserver de belles surprises, du moins à celui qui sait les voir. Alors partons à sa découverte! Papeete peut être assimilée à un puzzle géant, un patchwork ou melting pot architectural, dans lequel il est possible de jouer à deviner les différentes influences qu elle a subi, où l on peut lire les différentes époques que l île a connues. Les bâtiments sont en quelques sortes des strates, et chacun d entre eux témoigne du moment «T» auquel il est apparu. Et cette impression de «petit chaos» qui se dégage dans l ambiance de la ville, qui pourrait être difficile à appréhender pour les touristes au premier abord, est peut être finalement le caractère même de la ville, son essence, ce qui la rend si particulière. >>

27 As capital of our islands and the heart of Tahiti, Papeete s surprising assortment of architecture reflects its rich history as a melting pot, its evolutions and revolutions. Here is a discovery of Papeete. Architecture in French Polynesia underwent major changes after the second half of the 19th century, notably with the urban planning of the city of Papeete for business and military reasons. Let s go back even further in time. At the very beginning of the 19th century, the arrival of Christian missionaries on our islands was synonymous with major architectural upheavals that were only visible through religious buildings such as cathedrals, churches, and temples. However, these structures did use materials from nature such as coral, natural fibers, or earth. As far as dwellings, Polynesians have long preferred wood as a primary building material. The abundance and diversity of wood in most of the islands made it a readily available resource for people who took risks through building homes on stilts with large openings in areas near the ocean or rivers, and therefore prone to humidity. Climate conditions and French Polynesian industrialization led to using new types of materials, including concrete and sheet metal. The city of Papeete is far from being what most first time visitors to Tahiti expect. It is nothing like the clichés of the Polynesian straw dwellings, or fare, which are used to promote French Polynesia all over the world. Despite all this, Papeete still deserves the benefit of the doubt. Once visitors overcome any first impression of a disorganized city in which buildings seem to just exist for their own sake without taking into consideration what is around them, it still contains some little surprises for those who know how to look for them. A sneak peak follows. Papeete can be compared to a giant puzzle, an architectural patchwork or melting pot, in which one can play a game to try and pinpoint all the different influences it has had, and all the different eras that the island has experienced. The buildings are somewhat stratified, and each building bore witness to the exact moment it appeared. This chaotic impression that spreads throughout the city may be difficult for many tourists to grasp at first glance, yet perhaps this is what adds to the city s character and essence that make it so unique. Papeete is possibly one of the best examples of how its people live. In the words of epic poet Horace, only today counts, no one worries about tomorrow. Carpe diem. Seize the day! The architecture has three major influences. There is the Chinese influence due to the large number of French Polynesians who are of Chinese descent. Next is the historic colonial influence from November 6, 1843 when the Pomare Chiefdom became a French colony, until 1946 when Tahiti became a French overseas territory. Finally, there is the modern influence that has deeply etched the development of Papeete s urban landscape with concrete, which was necessary to build very quickly, efficiently, and cheaply. >> 27

L architecture est marquée principalement par trois grandes influences : l influence chinoise due à la présence d une importante communauté de Polynésiens d origine chinoise sur le territoire ; l influence coloniale due à cette période historique allant du 6 novembre 1843, date à laquelle le royaume Pomare est devenu une colonie française, à 1946 date à laquelle Tahiti devient un territoire français d outre-mer et, enfin, l influence de l époque moderne qui a profondément marqué l évolution du paysage urbain de Papeete avec la bétonisation intense du centre ville. Dans ce dernier cas, il fallait construire rapidement, efficacement, et à moindre coût. L influence chinoise La Polynésie française a connu deux vagues d immigration chinoise. L une aux alentours de 1863, la seconde durant le premier quart du vingtième siècle. Cette présence chinoise est facilement identifiable au regard de la ville de Papeete. Ici et là, on trouve de nombreux bâtiments aux accents asiatiques, plus ou moins prononcés. Hôtel Le Mandarin Son nom seul permet de ne plus douter de l influence qu il a subit. La seule chose qui le différencie de tout autre bâtiment à l architecture ultra simpliste et au toit de tôle du centre ville est cet ensemble de ces minuscules ornements en pointes recourbées qui débordent aux quatre coins de la toiture, ainsi qu une corniche côté rue Collette, surplombant les deux niveaux inférieurs. >> Chinese influence French Polynesia underwent two waves of Chinese immigration. One occurred around 1863, and the other during the first quarter of the 20th century. This Chinese presence is easily identifiable when looking at Papeete. Numerous buildings are scattered around that have more or less pronounced Asian features. Hôtel Le Mandarin Its name suggests its influence. The only thing that differentiates it from other buildings with simplistic architecture and tin roofs in the city center is a set of tiny ornaments on spikes that curl up over the edges of each of the four corners of the roof. There is also a carved molding facing Rue Colette above the two lower levels. This molding is just a façade plastered to the building that is not part of the actual building structure. The rafters and eaves create an overhang in the style of traditional Chinese architecture. It is believed that these details, added to a Lambda building, are more prevalent for commercial reasons rather than any claim to the Chinese world. The Koo Men Tong Association In 1983, hurricane Veena seriously damaged the original wooden building that was the Chinese school in It was then rebuilt in concrete. However, it is difficult to obtain any information about the origins from those who attended the school. Relatively spaced, thin, square-sectioned columns support the larger overhang and geometric wood ornaments that highlight the lower slab of the first level. Further, a red and blue coating that emphasizes the columns and slab are indicators a little less obvious than the previous example of the building s function.

30 >> Cette corniche est seulement plaquée à l édifice, elle ne participe en rien à la structure du bâtiment. On peut apercevoir les chevrons d avant-toit permettant une avancée du toit dans le style de l architecture traditionnelle chinoise. On imagine bien que ces détails, rajoutés à un bâtiment lambda, sont davantage présents pour des raisons commerciales que pour revendiquer une quelconque appartenance au monde chinois. L association Koo Men Tong Le bâtiment en bois d origine qui abritait l école chinoise fut sérieusement endommagé par le cyclone Veena en Il fut ensuite reconstruit en dur. Cependant, les références aux origines de ceux qui fréquentent ce lieu ne sont pas criantes. L utilisation de colonnes de section carrée et fines, relativement espacées, pour supporter le grand débord de toit, les ornements géométriques en bois soulignant la partie inférieure de la dalle du premier niveau ainsi que les enduits rouges et bleues qui soulignent respectivement les colonnes et la dalle, sont tout autant d indices un peu plus subtils que pour l exemple précédent sur la fonction qu occupe ce bâtiment. L association philanthropique chinoise Exception faite du portique, l appartenance de ce bâtiment à la communauté chinoise se lit certes d abord par les nombreuses inscriptions en façade mais surtout davantage par les couleurs employées que par son architecture. Le rouge et l or sont des couleurs omniprésentes dans le paysage bâti chinois: le rouge étant symbole de chance et l or celui de la richesse et, par extension, du pouvoir. Si ce n est la monumentalisation de l entrée par un escalier central, on ne retrouve ici aucun des codes de l architecture traditionnelle chinoise. L utilisation de ces couleurs permet l identification immédiate de la destination de ce bâtiment. Certains bâtiments quant à eux dépassent simplement cette prise d influence et sont de véritables copies conformes de bâtiments chinois. On ne peut cependant pas dire qu il s agisse d une spécificité locale, puisque dans le monde entier, des reproductions de bâtiments traditionnels fleurissent dans les quartiers chinois des grandes villes (13 e arrondissement de Paris, Chinatown etc.). Le temple Kanti Le long de la route, face à l ancien hôpital de Mamao, se dresse le temple chinois dédié à Kanti, divinité appelée aussi Guandi, qui est, en fait, un personnage historique du premier siècle de notre ère divinisé par la suite, une pratique courante dans les différentes religions chinoises. Son architecture est typiquement orientale. Les murs sont surmontés d un toit en pagode fait de tuiles en céramique avec des statuettes représentant les signes de l horoscope chinois, supporté par de grandes colonnes. Le temple a été dessiné par un architecte pratiquant la géomancie (technique de divination) de Taiwan, M Liaw tout en respectant l art du Feng Chui. Il est orienté vers le sud avec son assise au nord. Les matériaux de décorations et d ornements proviennent de Taiwan tandis que les deux lions en marbre blanc, gardiens du temple, sont des dons de la République Populaire de Chine. Les couleurs dominantes sont le rouge qui porte bonheur, le vert qui représente l espérance et le jaune/orange qui représente la richesse. L entrée du temple est gardée par deux dragons, animaux typiques de la mythologie chinoise. Le dragon appartient à la famille des immortels. Il est le symbole du principe mâle (yang), le phénix étant quant à lui le symbole du principe femelle (yin). 30

31 Chinese philanthropic association Except for the portico, the fact this building belongs to the Chinese community is obvious albeit initially through numerous inscriptions on the front but especially by the colors used for more than just architecture. Red and gold are omnipresent within Chinese architecture. Red is the symbol of luck and gold stands for prosperity, and by extension, power. Besides the monumental character of the entrance leading to a central staircase, there are no other traditional Chinese architectural codes.the use of the colors allows for an immediate recognition of this landmark. Other buildings go beyond having a subtle influence, and are instead exact replicas of typical Chinese buildings. It is hard to pinpoint a specific place, for reproductions of traditional buildings thrive within Chinese districts in large cities throughout the entire world (such as in Chinatown or the 13th Arrondissement in Paris). Kanti temple Along the road across from the old Mamao hospital, you ll find the Chinese temple dedicated to Kanti. Also called Guandi, this historical figure from the first century AD was subsequently deified, which was a common practice in various Chinese religions. The architecture is typically Asian. The ceramic tiled pagoda roof with statuettes representative of the signs of the Chinese zodiac is supported by large columns. M. Liaw, an architect from Taiwan who practiced geomancy (the art of divination), designed the temple with full respect for feng shui. It faces south with its foundation to the north. The decorative materials and ornaments come from Taiwan, whereas the two white marble lions, the guardians of the temple, are gifts from the People s Republic of China. The dominant colors are red to bring good luck, green for hope, and yellow/ orange for prosperity. The entrance to the temple is guarded by dragons, which are creatures typical of Chinese mythology. The dragon belongs to the family of immortals. It is the symbol of the male principle (yang), whereas the phoenix is the symbol of the female principal (yin). Colonial influence French Polynesia s colonial past constitutes an important part of Papeete s history. It in fact marked the architectural landscape of Tahiti and the islands in a lasting way. Today, it represents a legacy worth keeping at all costs because the remaining structures have become rare. Most of the few buildings that survived hurricanes and the 1914 bombing of Papeete by German warships in the Pacific have been restored. As far as French Polynesia s colonial architecture, some elements are more or less constant, such as colonnades, which are usually out of metal, and a four-sloped roof covered with Romanesque tiles. There is also the use of two main colors for the façade, or even still, an accent color for the trim and angles. The Social and Economic Counsel This contemporary building revives typical architectural elements of traditional colonial structures (stucco, brick, tile, etc.). Built in 1859 by the French Army, this huge building, dubbed the imperial stable, was home to an annex of the Broche barracks where feed, cannonballs, and cannons were stored. In a state of dilapidation, France transferred it to French Polynesia. Taking into consideration the sturdiness of the foundation and walls, French Polynesia initiated restorative construction work in 1989 and assigned it to the Department of Social and Economic Counsel, which took possession on May 5, This magnificent historical building restored to its original, grandiose state is now known as Te Raumire. 31

32 Découverte papeete L influence coloniale Le passé colonial de la Polynésie française constitue une part importante de l histoire de la ville de Papeete. Il a en effet marqué de façon durable le paysage architectural de Tahiti et de ses îles et représente aujourd hui un patrimoine à sauvegarder coûte que coûte tant les édifices remontant à cette époque sont devenus rares. Le peu de ces constructions ayant survécu au bombardement de Papeete en 1914 par des navires allemands présents dans le Pacifique, ainsi qu aux cyclones, ont été pour la plupart restaurés. Dans cette architecture coloniale de Polynésie française, certains éléments sont quasi constants, tels que les colonnades, constitués la plupart du temps de piliers en fonte ; le toit, à quatre pentes et couvert en tuiles romanes ; l utilisation de deux couleurs principales en façade ; ou encore l accentuation des encadrements d ouvertures et des angles par un changement de couleur. Le Conseil Économique Social et Culturel C est un bâtiment contemporain qui reprend les éléments typiques d architecture (enduit, brique, tuiles...) des anciens bâtiments coloniaux. Édifiée en 1859 par les services de l armée française, cette vaste bâtisse, dénommée à tort «les écuries impériales», abritait une annexe de la caserne Broche où étaient entreposés fourrages, boulets et canons... Dans un état de ruine et d abandon, l État le transféra au Pays. Compte tenu de la solidité de ses fondations et de ses murs, le Pays engagea des travaux de restauration en 1989 et l affecta au CESC qui s y installa le 5 mai Ce magnifique bâtiment historique à l aspect originel et solennel est désormais baptisé Te Raumaire. L ancien hôpital colonial Vaiami et la maison du pharmacien Édifié en 1848, l hôpital Vaiami fut l un des premiers bâtiments en dur construits à Papeete et reflète encore le style colonial et militaire de l époque. Le bâtiment a été construit sur pilotis afin d éviter les inondations et les toitures sont en tuiles. Comme souvent, une circulation fait le tour du bâtiment avec un toit soutenu par des piliers en fonte. La maison du pharmacien de l hôpital avec sa galerie métallique périphérique et ses petites pièces dotées d une grande hauteur de plafond est un exemple caractéristique de l architecture coloniale hospitalière du XIX e siècle. Elle était, comme son nom l indique, la demeure du pharmacien de l hôpital. Maison de la reine Marau Témoignage du passé colonial, cette magnifique demeure en face de l assemblée de Polynésie, appartenait autrefois à la reine Marau. En 1844, Ariitaimai et son époux Alexandre Salmon s y installent. Une première maison y est construite. En 1899, elle est dans un tel état de délabrement que la reine Marau, fille des époux Salmon, se décide à en faire construire une nouvelle. Cette vieille maison est aujourd hui en mauvais état et n est pas visitable à cause de son plancher vermoulu. À cette relativement forte présence coloniale dans l architecture de la ville de Papeete, s ajoutent des édifices récents, s inspirant de ce style qui a profondément marqué le bâti insulaire. On trouve cette architecture néocoloniale essentiellement dans les bâtiments publics tels que les mairies, les administrations, etc. Voici quelques exemples de bâtiments de style néocolonial. 32

33 Old colonial Vaiami hospital and the pharmacists s house Built in 1848, Vaiami hospital was one of the first hard wall structures in Papeete. It reflects the colonial and military style of the era. The building was constructed on stilts to avoid flooding and it has a tiled roof. As was often the case, air circulates around the building thanks to the roof placed on metal pillars. The hospital pharmacist s house with its peripheral metal gallery and its small rooms with high ceilings is characteristic of 19th century colonial hospital architecture. It was, as indicated by the name, the residence of the hospital pharmacist. House of Queen Marau As evidence of a colonial past, this magnificent dwelling across from French Polynesia s Assembly once belonged to Queen Marau. In 1844, Ariitaimai and her husband Alexandre Salmon lived there and the construction of a first house ensued. By 1899, it was in such a state of dilapidation that Queen Marau, the couple s daughter, decided to build a new house. This home today is in decrepit condition and visits are prohibited due to its rotten floors. On another note, there are recent additions to this relatively strong colonial architectural presence in Papeete that derived their inspiration from this style that has deeply influenced island construction. This neocolonial architecture is primarily found in public domains such as City Halls, administrative buildings, and so forth. Some examples of neocolonial style buildings will follow. Papeete s city hall Situated in the heart of what was once known as the Chinese quarter of town, the City Hall now proudly reigns from its current location. The present building was inaugurated in 1990 to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the district of Papeete. It is actually a replica although three times larger of Pomare s royal palace that was located a little farther away, on Tahahoi Plaza. This building takes on all the colonial architectural codes that are familiar to French Polynesians. French Polynesian Gouvernment Presidency In 1996, the president of the orange political party, Gaston Flosse, was reelected President of the government. A lot of construction ensued to convert the former Broche barracks into the governmental palace. The renovation was dedicated to conserving the principles of 19th century colonial military architecture while adapting to the luxuries of modern comforts. The Tahitian Academy (fare vana a) Created in 1972, The Tahitian Academy is located across from the Economic and Social Counsel (CESC). Its mission is to preserve and enrich the Tahitian language, to codify the vocabulary, grammar, and spelling, and to study the origins of the language and its connections to other languages spoken throughout the Pacific. 33

34 Mairie de Papeete Située au cœur de ce qui fut autrefois le quartier chinois de la ville qu elle domine fièrement du haut de son promontoire, le bâtiment actuel a été inauguré en 1990, à l occasion du centenaire de Papeete en tant que commune. Il se veut en effet la réplique fidèle, quoique trois fois plus grande, du palais royal des Pomare qui se dressait un peu plus loin, place Tarahoi. Le bâtiment reprend tous les codes de cette architecture coloniale si familière aux Polynésiens. Présidence du Gouvernement de la Polynésie française En 1996, le président du parti politique orange, Gaston Flosse est réélu aux fonctions de président du gouvernement. Plusieurs travaux sont alors mis en chantier dont la reconversion de l ancienne caserne Broche en palais gouvernemental. Cette reconstruction s est appliquée à conserver les principes de l architecture militaire coloniale du XIX e tout en l adaptant aux exigences de confort modernes. L Académie tahitienne (fare vana a) Crée en 1972, elle fait face au CESC. Ses missions sont de sauvegarder et d enrichir la langue tahitienne, de normaliser le vocabulaire, la grammaire et l orthographe, mais également d en étudier les origines et la parenté avec d autres langues parlées dans le Pacifique. 34

36 Découverte papeete パペーテ 建 築 界 のメルティングポット フレンチポリネシアの 首 都 でありタヒチの 中 心 地 パペーテの 一 見 ちぐはぐで 雑 多 に 見 える 町 並 み と 建 築 物 は この 地 が 経 てきた 豊 かな 歴 史 を 物 語 るものである パペーテとフレンチポリネシアが 生 きてきた 異 文 化 の 影 響 や 時 代 の 変 遷 大 きな 変 革 などを 建 築 という 観 点 から 発 見 しよう ポリネシアの 建 築 物 は 首 都 パペーテ で 軍 事 上 商 業 上 の 理 由 から 都 市 開 発 が 実 施 されたことなどにより 19 世 紀 後 半 以 降 大 きく 変 化 した しかし 時 代 をもう 少 しさかのぼった19 世 紀 初 頭 キリスト 教 宣 教 師 の 到 来 によって 大 聖 堂 や 教 会 寺 院 などが 次 々と 建 て られたことが ポリネシアの 建 築 にか つてない 大 変 革 をもたらしている こ れら 宗 教 建 築 には 外 観 からは 分 から ないが ポリネシアの 自 然 から 得 られ たサンゴや 天 然 繊 維 土 などが 建 材 と して 使 われている 住 居 用 の 建 材 としては ポリネシアで は 昔 から 木 材 が 最 も 多 く 利 用 されてき た どの 島 にも 建 材 として 使 える 木 が 種 類 量 とも 豊 富 にあり ポリネシア ンたちはこれを 利 用 して 海 岸 や 川 に 近 く 湿 気 の 多 い 場 所 に 家 を 建 てる 時 に は 大 きな 開 口 部 とピロティがある 高 床 構 造 の 家 を 作 ってきた しかし ポリネシアの 厳 しい 気 候 のた め あるいは 工 業 化 の 訪 れに 従 い 木 材 に 代 わってコンクリートや 金 属 板 な どの 新 しい 建 材 が 利 用 されるようにな る 今 日 タヒチを 初 めて 訪 れる 人 の 目 には パペーテの 町 は 想 像 したイメー ジとはかなりかけ 離 れて 映 るだろう 現 実 の 家 々は その 大 半 が 観 光 ポス ターなどPR 用 に 世 界 中 で 使 われている 写 真 にあるポリネシアンスタイルの 家 (ファレ)とはまったく 別 物 である しかし これだけで 判 断 を 下 すのは 早 計 というもの 家 々のどれもが 周 囲 と の 調 和 など 気 にも 止 めず 独 自 のスタ イルで 建 てられている 雑 然 とした 町 と いうパペーテの 第 一 印 象 の 裏 には 見 る 目 を 持 つ 人 にとっては の 話 だが 実 はうれしいサプライズが 隠 されてい る というわけで 建 築 をテーマにし たパペーテの 町 発 見 の 旅 に 出 かけよう 36

37 パズル パッチワーク メルテ ィングポット 建 築 という 視 点 から 見 ると パペーテの 町 は 巨 大 なパズルかパッチワーク ある いはメルティングポットのようなもの だ 町 が 受 けた 様 々な 建 築 的 影 響 タヒ チ 島 が 経 た 様 々な 時 代 を 建 物 に 読 み 取 っ て 当 てっこすることができる 建 物 は いわば 地 層 のようなもので 各 地 層 がそ の 出 現 時 期 を 証 言 しているからだ パペ ーテの 町 の 景 色 から 受 ける ちょっとし たカオス 状 態 という 印 象 は 初 めて 訪 れるツーリストにとっては 少 し 違 和 感 が あるかもしれないが 実 はこのカオスこ そがパペーテのキャラクターそのもの 真 髄 であり パペーテの 町 を 特 別 なもの にしている 要 因 である パペーテはおそ らく そこに 住 む 人 々の 生 き 方 が 建 築 に 反 映 している 例 として 最 高 の 部 類 に 入 る ものだろう つまり 大 事 なのは 今 日 の ことだけ 明 日 のことなど 誰 も 心 配 しな い ちょうど 古 代 ローマの 詩 人 ホラテ ィウスの 詩 にある カルペディエム(ラ テン 語 で その 日 を 摘 め ) つまり 今 この 瞬 間 を 楽 しめ というくだりを 具 現 するライフスタイルの 反 映 である パペーテの 建 築 には 大 きく 分 けると3 つの 大 きな 影 響 が 見 られる まずは 中 国 建 築 の 影 響 で これはポリネシアに 多 い 中 国 系 移 民 の 存 在 から 来 ている 次 に 植 民 地 時 代 の 遺 産 であるコロニアル 風 の 影 響 があり これはポマレ 王 国 がフラン スの 植 民 地 となった1843 年 11 月 6 日 か らタヒチがフランスの 海 外 領 土 になった 1946 年 までの 間 のことである 3つ 目 は 近 代 化 の 訪 れによる 影 響 で パペーテ の 中 心 街 はコンクリートの 都 市 空 間 とな り 町 の 風 景 が 大 幅 に 変 わることになっ た この 時 代 には 速 く 効 果 的 に そ して 最 低 のコストで 建 物 を 作 る 必 要 があ ったのだ 中 国 建 築 の 影 響 フレンチポリネシアへの 中 国 移 民 は 時 期 的 には1863 年 頃 と20 世 紀 初 頭 の2つの 波 としてやって 来 た パペーテの 町 を 眺 めると 多 少 とも 東 洋 風 の 建 物 があちこ ちに 見 られ 中 国 建 築 の 影 響 は 一 目 瞭 然 である ル マンダラン はフランス 語 で 中 国 の 高 級 官 吏 あるいは 北 京 官 話 ( 最 も 多 く 使 われている 中 国 語 )を 意 味 し この 名 前 だけでもホテルの 建 物 が 受 けている 影 響 は 明 らかである パペーテの 中 心 街 にある 他 の 建 物 と 同 様 に 非 常 にシンプ ルな 設 計 の 金 属 屋 根 の 建 物 だが 屋 根 の 四 方 にある 先 が 尖 ってカーブした 中 国 風 の 飾 りと コレット 通 り 側 外 壁 の2 階 部 分 を 飾 るコーニス( 軒 蛇 腹 )だけが 他 の 建 物 との 違 いを 際 立 たせている コーニ スは 外 壁 に 貼 り 付 けられているだけで 建 物 本 体 の 構 造 には 組 み 込 まれていな い また 中 国 の 伝 統 建 築 様 式 である 張 り 出 した 屋 根 を 支 える 垂 木 が 見 える ご くありきたりの 建 物 にこのような 細 部 の 飾 りを 付 け 加 えたのは 中 国 系 移 民 が 自 分 たちの 帰 属 を 主 張 するためというより は どちらかといえば 商 業 的 な 効 果 を 狙 ったもののようである コーメンタン( 国 民 党 ) 協 会 中 国 人 学 校 があった 当 初 の 木 造 建 築 は 1983 年 にサイクロン ヴェエナ によって 大 きな 被 害 を 受 けた 現 在 の 建 物 は その 後 コンクリート 建 築 に 建 て 替 えられたもので 主 な 利 用 者 である 中 国 系 移 民 の 故 郷 の 特 色 はあまり 目 立 たな い しかし 大 きく 張 り 出 した 軒 を 間 隔 を 広 く 取 った 細 い 正 方 形 柱 で 支 えた 回 廊 や 2 階 床 板 の 下 側 を 強 調 する 木 の 幾 何 学 装 飾 また 赤 と 青 の 塗 料 で 柱 と 床 板 を 強 調 している 点 などは ホテル ル マンダランの 例 と 比 べ 多 少 といえども 手 の 込 んだ 装 飾 であり 中 国 文 化 に 親 しみ 社 会 に 貢 献 するという 建 物 の 役 割 を 示 し ている 37

38 Découverte papeete 38 中 華 会 館 堂 々たる 門 構 えがすばらしいこの 建 物 は 正 面 の 壁 にある 漢 字 表 記 で 中 国 系 ということが 誰 の 目 にも 明 らかではあ るが 設 計 面 よりも 建 物 に 使 われてい る 色 が 中 国 様 式 をより 強 調 してい る 赤 と 金 色 は 中 国 の 建 物 に 多 用 され る 色 で 赤 は 幸 運 金 色 は 豊 かさとそ の 延 長 の 権 力 を 象 徴 している ただ し 入 り 口 に 壮 大 な 雰 囲 気 を 与 えてい る 正 面 中 央 階 段 以 外 には 特 に 中 国 の 伝 統 建 築 様 式 は 見 られず 赤 と 金 の 色 使 いだけが 建 物 の 用 途 を 明 示 するアイデ ンティティとなっている 中 国 会 館 の ように 中 国 様 式 の 影 響 を 受 けた 建 物 という 領 域 を 超 え 中 国 建 築 をま るでコピーした 建 物 もパペーテにいく つかあるが これはタヒチ 特 有 の 現 象 ではなく パリの13 区 やチャイナタ ウンなど 世 界 中 の 大 都 市 の 中 国 人 街 で 中 国 建 築 のコピーが 多 く 見 られ る 関 帝 廟 パペーテから 東 へ 向 かう 道 路 沿 い 旧 ママオ 病 院 の 向 かいには 関 帝 ( 関 羽 )を 祀 る 関 帝 廟 がそびえている 関 帝 は 紀 元 後 1 世 紀 の 中 国 歴 史 上 の 人 物 関 羽 が 後 世 に 神 格 化 されて 信 仰 の 対 象 となったもので このように 実 在 人 物 を 神 格 化 することは 中 国 の 宗 教 観 ではままあることだ 関 帝 廟 は 典 型 的 な 東 洋 建 築 である 壁 から 張 り 出 したパゴダ 風 の 屋 根 には 陶 製 の 瓦 が 使 われ 太 い 柱 の 上 には 中 国 十 二 宮 図 のシンボルを 表 す 小 像 が 飾 ら れている 関 帝 廟 の 設 計 者 は 台 湾 の 建 築 家 リアウ 氏 で 設 計 にあたっては 土 占 いの 手 法 を 用 い また 風 水 を 順 守 し ている 建 物 は 北 側 の 基 礎 部 分 から 南 向 きに 開 いている 装 飾 は 台 湾 製 で 入 り 口 にある2 頭 の 大 理 石 の 狛 犬 は 中 華 人 民 共 和 国 から 寄 贈 されたものであ る 建 物 のメインカラーには 幸 運 を 呼 ぶ 赤 と 希 望 を 示 す 緑 色 豊 かさを 表 すオレンジがかった 黄 色 が 使 われてい る 建 物 の 入 り 口 を 守 るのは 中 国 神 話 の 代 表 的 な 動 物 である 龍 2 頭 である なお 不 死 身 の 動 物 である 龍 は 雄 性 ( 陽 )を 象 徴 し 鳳 凰 は 雌 性 ( 陰 )を 象 徴 している 植 民 地 建 築 の 影 響 仏 領 ポリネシアが 過 去 に 植 民 地 だった という 事 実 は パペーテの 歴 史 上 重 要 な 部 分 を 占 めている タヒチとその 島 々の 建 築 においてもその 影 響 は 長 期 に 渡 っており 植 民 地 時 代 に 建 てられ た 建 築 物 が 非 常 に 少 なくなっている 今 日 なんとしても 保 存 すべき 文 化 遺 産 となっている 1914 年 に 太 平 洋 に 駐 留 していたドイツ 艦 船 による 爆 撃 を 逃 れ また 数 々のサイクロンに 耐 え 抜 い た 数 少 ない 植 民 地 時 代 の 建 物 は 現 在 その 大 半 が 修 復 されている 仏 領 ポリネシアの 植 民 地 様 式 建 築 物 は いずれもほぼ 同 じ 特 徴 的 要 素 が 見 られる ほとんどに 鋳 鉄 製 の 柱 を 用 い た 列 柱 があることと 屋 根 は 目 板 瓦 の 方 形 屋 根 外 壁 には2 色 のメインカラー を 用 いて 開 口 部 やアングルは 色 を 変 えてアクセントがつけられていること である 経 済 社 会 文 化 諮 問 院 この 建 物 は 塗 料 やレンガ 瓦 などに 元 の 建 物 のコロニアル 風 の 特 徴 を 取 り 入 れた 近 代 建 築 である 元 々は 1859 年 にフランス 軍 によって 建 設 された 大 きな 建 物 で ブローシュ 兵 舎 の 別 館 と してまぐさや 砲 弾 大 砲 などが 置 かれ ていたために 帝 国 厩 舎 という 間 違 った 名 称 で 呼 ばれていた 植 民 地 時 代 が 終 わってフランスの 海 外 領 土 となっ

42 Stéphane Mailion Tahiti Ora, un des plus renommés groupe de danse tahitienne, a remporté en juillet 2014 le concours de chants & danse du Heiva. Une récompense des plus prestigieuses pour un spectacle exceptionnel qui sera prochainement présenté en tournée au Japon et en France. Ce succès, Tahiti Ora le doit à toute une équipe menée de main de maître par Tumata Robinson, l exigeante chef de troupe. Rencontre et découverte. Nous sommes le 17 juillet 2014 sur la scène de la place To ata à Papeete pendant la soirée des lauréats du concours de danse et de chants du Heiva. Le moment est venu d annoncer le nom du vainqueur dans la catégorie des groupes de danse confirmés. La présidente du jury s exclame: «Tahiti Ora!» Tumata Robinson, la chef et l âme de la troupe, pleine de retenue mais avec un sourire éclatant, se lève et s avance pour saisir le trophée puis le brandit sous les applaudissements du public. Ce moment fort est la conclusion d une histoire commencée un an et demi auparavant. C est le temps qui a été nécessaire à Tahiti Ora pour écrire le thème du spectacle, le chorégraphier, créer les costumes et le mettre en scène. Un travail «épuisant», résume Tumata Robinson. Mais le Heiva i Tahiti est un rendez-vous incontournable pour les passionnés de Ori Tahiti, la danse tahitienne. Les plus grands groupes de danse s affrontent pour obtenir la première place. Le travail est de longue haleine pour les chefs et les troupes entières. Il faut trouver un thème, car ce n est pas seulement de la danse mais aussi une histoire qui est racontée et interprétée sur scène. Il faut monter le déroulé du spectacle avec les pas de base obligatoires ; mettre en scène danseuses et danseurs qui peuvent être jusqu à 160 et, enfin, créer les costumes. Et «tout s imbrique», assure Tumata Robinson. Rythme sauvage et puissant Pour ce nouveau spectacle présenté au Heiva I Tahiti 2014, Tahiti Ora a choisi le thème de la malédiction : Pïfao. Ce terme tahitien désigne une incantation pour envoûter quelqu un ou jeter un sort. L histoire est la suivante : des frères jumeaux, qui ont grandi séparément, se retrouvent face à face lors d une guerre. L un meurt sous les coups de son frère qui ne l a pas reconnu. La souveraine prêtresse qui a élevé le garçon invoque alors les forces du mal pour punir le meurtrier et tente même de ramener son enfant à la vie. >> 42

Tahiti Ora owes its success to Tumata Robinson s artistic direction. This demanding director likes to imagine that her performances are like scenes in movies, in which nothing is left to chance. It is the evening of July 17, 2014, on stage at the place To ata performance space in Papeete for the dance and singing Heiva awards. The moment has arrived to announce the winners in the confirmed dance group category. The head judge exclaims, Tahiti Ora! Tumata Robinson, the director and soul of the troupe, rises and advances with self-control and a beaming smile before accepting the trophy and brandishing it while the audience applauds. This moment concludes a story that started a year and a half ago. This was how much time was necessary for the group Tahiti Ora to write the theme for the performance, to choreograph it, create the costumes, and to produce it. Tumata Robinson says it was exhausting work. However, the Heiva i Tahiti is a key event for Ori Tahiti (Tahitian dance) enthusiasts. The largest dance troupes compete for first place. The amount of work is extensive for directors and the entire troupe. They must come up with a theme, for it is not only about dance, but also about telling a story interpreted on the stage. They must also produce an entire show that includes basic dance steps, direct up to about 160 dancers, and create all the costumes. And everything comes together, Tumata Robinson asserts. Powerful, wild rhythms For this new performance presented at the 2014 Heiva I Tahiti 2014, Tahiti Ora chose the theme of the curse : Pïfao. This Tahitian word refers to sorcery within the context of captivating someone or casting a spell. Twin brothers, who grew up apart, find themselves face to face during a war. One twin is killed by his brother, whom he never knew. The high priestess who raised the fallen twin invoked the forces of evil to punish his killer and she even tried to bring her child back to life. On stage, the performance opens with war and the twin brother s murder. The rhythm is wild and powerful. The dancers sing their hatred. Torn costumes, in gray and brown tones, symbolize the battle. Right away, the audience is immersed into the darkness of war and death. There is no pause. The dances and örero (oratures) are back to back, and spectators are enthralled. Tumata explains, When I come up with a show, I like to imagine what it would be like as a film. I have it play out like a screenplay. I don t know where this inspiration comes from This is a concept that without a doubt sets her work apart from other troupes, and distinguishes Tahiti Ora. On stage, the priestess curses the murderer. Her words are so powerful that they shake up some of the spectators. Then it was a return to light. Yellow and orange hues burst onto the stage. It is time for laughter, joy, and forgiveness. To produce this legend, Tumata Robinson surrounded herself with the greats. John Mairai, well-known director and playwright in Tahiti, wrote the theme in Tahitian. Moena Maiotui and Mata Teuru came up with the female choreographies. Victor and Kaley Teriitahi created all the men s choreographies. Les costumes déchirés, dans les tons gris et marron, évoquent la lutte. Les spectateurs sont immédiatement emportés par la noirceur de la guerre et de la mort. Il n y a pas de pause, les danses et les örero (déclamations) s enchaînent sans laisser au spectateur la possibilité de regarder ailleurs. «Quand je monte un spectacle, j aime l imaginer comme s il pouvait devenir un film. Je le déroule comme un scénario de cinéma. Je ne sais pas d où je tiens ça», explique Tumata Robinson pensive. Une conception qui contribue sans doute à faire la différence avec les autres troupes et marque l originalité de Tahiti Ora. Sur scène, la prêtresse maudit le meurtrier. Ses mots sont tellement forts qu ils ont secoué certains spectateurs. Et puis c est le retour à la lumière. Le jaune et l orange éclatent sur scène, c est le rire, la joie et le pardon. Pour mettre en scène cette légende, Tumata Robinson s est entourée des meilleurs : John Mairai, homme de théâtre et metteur en scène connu à Tahiti, a écrit le thème en tahitien. Moena Maiotui et Mata Teuru ont pensé les chorégraphies pour les femmes ; Victor et Kaley Teriitahi les chorégraphies des hommes. Freddy Fagu a confectionné une partie des costumes. «Je n aime pas trop parler de ce que je fais parce que c est un travail d équipe», insiste Tumata Robinson qui préfère rester discrète et éviter les flashs des photographes. Une passion qui ne l a jamais quittée... Ce sont d ailleurs les danseurs et danseuses qui sont venus la chercher pour qu elle monte le groupe Tahiti Ora, six ans auparavant. Dès l âge de 7 ans, Tumata Robinson est initiée à la danse tahitienne par Paulina Morgan. Une passion qui ne l a jamais quittée. À 20 ans, elle monte sa première troupe qui porte son nom. Elle ne s étonne pas de l avoir fait si tôt. C était «Naturel», explique-t-elle, la «suite logique» de son apprentissage. >> A passion she never gave up... Stéphane Mailion Dancers came to ask her to put the Tahiti Ora dance troupe together about six years ago. When she was seven, Tumata Robinson first started Tahitian dance under the tutelage of Paulina Morgan. She never let go of this passion. When she was 20, she created her first troupe that was named after her. She wasn t surprised to have done this so early in life. It was normal, she says, a logical progression of her apprenticeship. She co-founded Les Grands Ballets de Tahiti that performs on world tours and promotes Tahitian dance abroad. In 2007, she left Les Grands Ballets, and a month later, several dancers approached her about creating another troupe. When one person approaches me, then I can turn it down. But once ten or fifteen have the same request so Tumata Robinson threw herself into it once again. Tahiti Ora came into being at the beginning of Each troupe has its own identity. Tahiti Ora s encompasses the joy of living, family, and loyalty. Some dancers jump from troupe to troupe. I don t agree with this nomadic spirit. I find we lose our identity. About 40 artists make up the foundation of Tahiti Ora and we are very close. Like a firm yet fair mother, she assures that, as much as my dancers do what is asked of them on stage with flawless presentation when they dance, I do not interfere in their personal lives. I have very high standards for what they must accomplish during a performance and I require a lot of precision. There is no room for chance. Everything is calibrated to the minutest detail and Tumata Robinson does not want to be weighed down with embellishment or indulgences. She has no mercy when it comes to trying to be the best, and it pays off. For the second time, after obtaining first place in 2011, Tahit Ora once again takes the highest step on the eiva i Tahiti podium. The troupe already came away with five awards in 2011 for best vegetal costume created by Freddy Fagu, best dance troupe in the confirmed dance category, best female dancer (Moena Maiotui), best ra atira (the orator who appeals to the audience), and best creative orchestra.
