2 GB AC / DC Current Clamp Adapter Read without fail! Read these operating instructions thoroughly. Damage arising from failure to observe the operating instructions will void any guarantee claims. Failure to observe the instructions may also endanger life! We accept no liability for consequential damage resulting from this. Keep these operating instructions in a safe place. It is assumed that the user possesses basic knowledge about handling measuring instruments. Contents Page 1. Intended use Introduction Safety information Description of operating elements Using the Current Clamp Adapters Performing current measurements Maintenance and calibration Technical data and measuring tolerances Intended use: Measurement (by Hall-effect sensor) of direct and alternating currents up to 600 A DC and A AC rms max. Output of the converted current is in the form of a DC voltage of from 1 mv to 600 mv to an oscilloscope via the captive connecting cable. Measurements must not be performed under unfavourable ambient conditions. Unfavourable ambient conditions include: wetness or excessive air humidity, dust and combustible gases, fumes or solvents, thunderstorms or storm conditions such as strong electrostatic fields, etc. Any use other than as described above can lead to damage to the product and can also cause hazards, such as for example short circuit, fire, electric shock etc. No part of the product may be modified or converted! The safety instructions are to be followed without fail! 2. Introduction The AC/DC Current Clamp Adapter 160 can be used for both DC and AC currents up to 600 A max. After attachment to an oscilloscope with an input resistance of equal to or greater than 1 MOhm, the output of the adapter can be set to "0" with the "ZERO ADJUST" control. The current clamp has an opening width of 30 mm max. (to "enclose" the current rail, single conductor, cable system, etc.). The adapter can be universally applied in hobby, educational and (limited) industrial areas. 3. Safety information The AC/DC Current Clamp Adapter is EMC-tested (for domestic applications) and safety-tested and meets European directives 89/336/EU and 73/23/EU. The current clamp adapter left the factory in perfectly technically safe condition. To maintain this condition and to ensure safe operation, it is essential for the user to observe the safety instructions and warning notes which are contained in these user instructions. The AC/DC Current Clamp Adapter must not be used in installations in IEC overvoltage category III. The measuring instrument is not protected against arc explosions. 3

The voltage present in the circuit being measured may under no circumstances exceed the value of 480 V AC rms or 600 V DC. Note the following symbols Warning! Electric shock if touched! 4 Protection class 2 symbol (double-insulated) Measuring instruments and accessories are not toys and do not belong in the hands of children! In commercial facilities the accident-prevention regulations of the Industrial Employers' Liability Association for electrical systems and equipment must be observed. In schools, training facilities, hobby and self-help workshops, the handling of measuring instruments must be supervised responsibly by trained personnel. Except where this can be performed manually, live parts may be exposed when opening covers or removing components. Connecting parts may also be live. Before any adjustment, maintenance, repair or replacement of components or assemblies, if it is necessary to open the unit, it must be disconnected from all voltage sources and circuits. If adjustment, maintenance or repair is subsequently required on the opened unit while it is live, these must only be performed by a specialist familiar with the associated hazards and relevant regulations (VDE- 0100, VDE-0701, VDE-0686). Capacitors in the unit may still be charged even when the unit has been isolated from all voltage sources and circuits. Take particular care when dealing with voltages greater than 25 V AC or greater than 35 V DC. Even at these voltages it is possible to receive a lethal electric shock if electrical conductors are touched. Therefore, first of all switch off the voltage source, clamp the unit around the cable(s) to be measured and only then switch the voltage source. After completion of the measurement, switch off the voltage source and remove the current clamp from the circuit. Before each measurement check the unit and its cables for damage. Under no circumstances carry out measurements when the protective insulation is damaged (torn, torn away, etc.). The measuring instrument should not be used in areas or under adverse environmental conditions in which inflammable gas, fumes or dust are present or can occur. For your own safety it is essential to avoid the measuring instrument or its cables becoming damp or wet. Avoid excessive humidity and steam. While performing measurements the hands, shoes and the floor must without fail be dry. To avoid electric shock, care should be taken that current rails and connections (points of measurement) are not touched during measurement, not even indirectly. Measurements in current sources with inductive / capacitive charges and measurement during storms is very dangerous and so is to be avoided, because especially in these cases very high voltages/discharges are to be reckoned with. Currents > 600 A can lead to damage to the current clamp adapter. Take care that only one single insulated cable (30 mm max. diameter) is enclosed when making measurements. Measurement of multi-core single-phase cables is not possible. If in contrast two or more insulated cables (30 mm max. total diameter) of a multi-phase system are enclosed, the indicated 5

6 current value corresponds to the vector sum of the individual currents. If it can be assumed that safe operation is no longer possible, then the unit must be switched off and protected against unintentional operation. It can be assumed that safe operation is no longer possible if - the instrument shows visible signs of damage, - the unit no longer functions and - after prolonged storage under unfavourable conditions or - after severe transportation stress. Never switch the instrument on immediately after it has been brought from a cold into a warm area. The resultant condensation water could damage the instrument. Allow the instrument to come to room temperature before switching it on. 4. Description of operating elements For illustration, see fold-out page 1. Current clamp adapter with an opening diameter of 30 mm max. (for "enclosing" the current rails, single cables, cable systems, etc.), with hand protector 1a. 2. Slide switch for switching the unit on and off. 3. Red for ("+") and black ("-") test lead (spiral cable). Even during AC current measurements, the output from the clamp adapter is a DC voltage. 4. Opening lever for the current clamp. 5. Control LEDs 5a "LO BAT"; it is time to change the internal battery when this LED lights (red). 5b "POWER"; this LED lights (green) when the Current Clamp Adapter is on. 6. Battery compartment 7. "ZERO ADJ" control for setting zero (offset) during DC current measurement 5. Using the Current Clamp Adapters 5.1 Fitting the battery - changing the battery To function perfectly, the unit must be fitted with a 9V dry cell battery. If the "LO BAT" LED lights, the battery must be changed. Proceed as follows: Disconnect the measuring instrument from the circuit being measured (current rails, single cables, cable systems, etc.), switch it off and using a suitable cross-head screwdriver, unscrew the single securing screw of the battery compartment cover on the rear of the unit. Now carefully slide the cover of the battery compartment in the direction of the arrow. Disconnect the used battery from its connecting clip and replace it with a fresh battery of the same (alkaline) type. After successfully exchanging the battery replace it in the battery compartment and carefully close this once more in reverse sequence. When closing the battery compartment, take care that the red/black connecting clip leads do not become trapped. If the measuring instrument is not to be used for a long period (more than 60 days), the batteries should be removed and stored separately. Never operate the measuring instrument in an opened condition!!danger to life! Do not leave used batteries in the measuring device, because even leak-proof batteries can corrode and thereby release chemicals, which are both damaging to health and can destroy the battery compartment. 7

Used batteries are to be treated as waste requiring special handling and must therefore be disposed of without harming the environment. Special collection bins are provided for this purpose at specialist retailers and in waste-recovery yards. 5.2 Connecting the instrument leads For measurements, always use only the Current Clamp Adapter captive connecting cable. Before connecting, always check the condition of the BNC connecting plug and check the insulation for damage. Connect the plug to the BNC input socket of an oscilloscope (channel 1 or 2). Set the oscilloscope input coupling switch (AC-GND-DC) to DC and the input amplifier sensitivity of the respective channel to 5 mv/division or lower (if possible). This setting of input sensitivity is not required with oscilloscopes having an automatic setup function. 6. Performing current measurements Under no circumstances exceed the maximum permitted input levels 600 A DC / A AC rms max. At the same time, the voltage may never exceed 600 V DC or 480 V AC rms! Touch no circuits or circuit components where voltages higher than 25 VAC rms or 35 VDC can be present! Danger to life! To measure direct or alternating currents, procedure is as follows: 1. Switch the Current Clamp Adapter and the connected oscilloscope on. Set the oscilloscope AC-GND-DC coupling to "DC" and the "V/division" switch to 5 mv (or lower). 2. Open the current clamp with the clamp opening lever. Enclose not more than one insulated conductor during DC current 8 measurements; when measuring AC current, enclose only one insulated cable in a single-phase system or only one or several insulated cables of a multiphase system. Just below the clamp opening is a hand protector, a plastic ridge. While enclosing the cable or current rail and during measurements, never grip beyond the hand protector - DANGER TO LIFE!!! 3. Close the clamp around the current-carrying cable by releasing the clamp opening lever. The contact surfaces of the clamp must be securely closed; the cable(s) must move freely within the clamp opening. Ensure that the cable is positioned as centrally as possible during the reading. 4. During DC measurements the direction of current flow is important. If the oscilloscope beam moves downwards, then the direction of the current has probably been misjudged. 5. Before measuring DC current, the indication on the oscilloscope must be set to "zero". For this, set the AC-GND-DC switch to GND and with the vertical position control of the selected channel adjust the beam to coincide with the horizontal centre line. Then set the AC-GND-DC switch to DC once again. Now adjustment of the Current Clamp Adapter to "0" can be carried out. Turn the "ZERO ADJUST" control until the beam coincides with the horizontal centre line of the oscilloscope. During calibration, no conductor may be within the current clamp and the clamp may not be close to a magnetic interferen- 9

ce field (e.g. loudspeaker, electrical machinery, etc.). The contact surfaces of the clamp jaws must be clean and properly closed. If zero calibration cannot be carried out perfectly, proceed as follows: After several DC current measurements have been carried out, residual magnetism can be present in the clamp. This can be neutralised by changing the direction of the current to be measured by reversing the orientation of the current clamp. Snap the clamp open and closed several times one after the other. Then try setting zero once again. Do not measure any currents in circuits in which voltages greater than 600 V DC or 480 V AC rms can occur, otherwise life can be endangered as a result. Never measure currents over 600 A. 7. Maintenance and calibration To guarantee the accuracy of the Current Clamp Adapter over a long period of time, it should be calibrated once annually. Changing the batteries is described under 5.1. For cleaning of the case, use a clean, lint-free, antistatic and dry cleaning cloth. Do not use any carbonaceous cleaning agents or petroleum, alcohol or similar for cleaning. They can attack the surface of the measuring instrument. Additionally, the fumes are explosive and endanger health. When cleaning, also use no sharp-edged tools, screwdrivers, metal brushes or similar Technical data and measurement tolerances 8.1 Technical data Voltage in circuit being measured...: 600 VDC or 480 VACrms AC current frequency...: 50 Hz to 400 Hz max.

600 A verwendbar.

Achtung! Messen Sie keine Ströme in Stromkreisen, in welchen Spannungen größer 600 VDC bzw.
