1 Life and faces of the Alaotra lake, Madagascar by Arnaud De Grave, June 13th, 2015 Published in Exhibitions, Reportage Life and faces of the Alaotra, Madagascar GTÖ conference, Zurich, April 2015 The AlaReLa (Alaotra Resilience Landscape) Madagascar project started in November 2013, with a project life of three years. One of the objectives is to understand the complex human-environmental system of the Alaotra. The project consists of three phases: understanding, exploring, communicating, with the latter ongoing, from inception to end of the project, and beyond. We have started administering various formats of communication, with photography as a crucial technique. This is no news to couple both, science and art. What is novel though, is the approach. In this project, photography is not used to document only; actually, it is mainly to interact with people, and people here being the main stakeholders of the Alaotra such as farmers, fishers, the people on the market, the kids in the streets, but also the researchers. Usually, the researcher is on the other side of the lens. Admittedly, it is rare and rather unusual as a researcher to have a lens pointing towards one while working. This not only evokes a feeling of being observed or documented; it somehow helps to actually better understand or see the main stakeholders, or objects of research how may they feel when being scrutinized by researchers? This is an important question that researchers should always bear in mind when working with people in order to be respectful, since there are marked cultural and social boundaries that are about to be crossed. What we do in the AlaReLa research, amongst others, is gaming. We play games (or test models) to assess the participants behavior under changing conditions. This will allow the research to draw conclusions and interlink actors decision with changing environments. While doing so, we, as researchers observe the participants and collect data. During this process we are also been watched by the photographer, and both are been watched by the stakeholders. This triangle of observers (stakeholders-researchers-photographer) watching, talking and listening to each other is assumed to ease the exchange between the various knowledge systems and to enforce the learning effect, eventually leading to increased understanding of the Alaotra system. In the following we present some of the photography taken during the first session of the photographer in the Alaotra. 2 Life and faces of the Alaotra lake, Madagascar by Arnaud De Grave, June 13th, 2015 Published in Exhibitions, Reportage Le project AlaReLa (Alaotra Resilience Landscape, résilience des paysages de l Alaotra) a démarré en novembre 2013 et durera trois ans. L un des objectifs est de comprendre la complexité du système Homme-environnement de la région limitrophe du lac Alaotra. Le projet s articule autour de trois phases : comprendre explorer communiquer. Cette dernière phase, communiquer, se déroule sur l ensemble du projet mais se poursuivra aussi au-delà des trois années. Nous avons commencé par tâtonner avec divers moyens de communication, la photographie étant une technique cruciale dans le projet. Rien de nouveau que de combiner art et science ; notre approche est en revanche novatrice. Ici, la photographie n est pas limitée à des fins documentaires, en effet elle sert bien de vecteur pour interagir avec les acteurs locaux. Ces acteurs sont les parties-prenantes de l Alaotra : des fermiers, des pêcheurs, des marchands sur les marchés locaux ou encore les enfants de la rue. Dans ce système, les chercheurs du projet ne sont jamais, eux aussi, que des acteurs. Le plus souvent on les trouve «de l autre côté de l appareil» car le chercheur est rarement documenté avec un objectif pointé sur lui alors qu il recherche. Au-delà du sentiment d être observé ou analysé, le procédé lui permet de mieux comprendre ou de mieux voir les principaux acteurs ou «objets» de sa recherche, de vivre ce qu ils ressentent lorsqu ils sont «scrutés» par les chercheurs. C est un aspect que les chercheurs, de manière générale, devraient toujours garder à l esprit lorsqu il travaille avec les gens ; pas seulement pour le respect mais aussi pour se rappeler que de toute évidence des barrières culturelles et sociales sont en passe d être franchies. Une des choses que nous faisons dans le projet de recherche AlaReLa est de jouer. Nous utilisons des jeux (qui sont bien-sûr aussi des modèles à tester) pour évaluer le comportement des participants lorsque certaines conditions changent. Cela nous permet de tirer des conclusions et de lier les choix des acteurs aux changements intervenant sur l environnement. Au cours du jeu, nous, les chercheurs, observons les participants et récoltons des données. Pendant ce temps, nous sommes observés par le photographe, et de la même façon, conjointement avec le photographe, nous sommes observés par les parties-prenantes. Nous pensons que la présence de ces trois points de vue lorsque les parties-prenantes, les chercheurs et le photographe s observent, se parlent, s écoutent facilite les échanges entre les différents systèmes de connaissance, renforce le processus d apprentissage et finira par nous permettre de mieux comprendre ce système qu est l Alaotra. Dans cette exposition nous montrons quelques-unes des photos de la première mission du photographe dans l Alaotra. Les légendes ont été écrites par Lucienne Wilmé, nous donnant un point de vue de la recherche. Patrick Waeber a écrit cette introduction et Ihoby Randriamalala en a fait la traduction en malgache.

Malagasy women: three generations, three families as one. Their history is carved in the eyes of the matriarch who looks after the clan.

Le riz cuit généralement sur des feux de bois, dans des cuisines fermées et de nombreux paysans souffrent de maladies pulmonaires causées par les fumées. A small mortar and pestle in an outdoor kitchen. Usually rice is cooked indoors, using firewood. Many farmers suffer from lung diseases caused by the smoke.

6 Madagascar - AlaReLa project 03 Les poulets malgaches ont des gènes africains et asiatiques ; ceux aux longues cuisses sont les plus prisés pour les combats et la marmite. Malagasy chickens have a dual African and Asian origin; those with long legs are preferred both as fighting and meat birds.

A countryside woman's dream: a small shop with a good selection of products, hygienic beverages, candies and Parisian baguettes..

8 Madagascar - AlaReLa project 05 Le passage du photographe amuse les enfants. Une maison de quelques m² peut abriter une famille entière, les rideaux isolent alors les pièces. Kids are amused by the photographer's presence. A house of a few square metres can be home for a whole family. Curtains are then used for separation between "rooms".

9 Madagascar - AlaReLa project 06 La vie ralentie des villages scrutée par les yeux de toutes les générations. Plus de 80% de la population malgache est rurale. Slow village life, scrutinized by the eyes of all generations. More than 80% of the Malagasy people live in the rural countryside.

10 Madagascar - AlaReLa project 07 Poisson d hiver. Une prise de tilapias en avril ; les tilapias du lac Alaotra ont été introduits d Afrique au début du XXe siècle. Ces poissons améliorent les repas des riverains du lac Alaotra. Winter fish: tilapias fished in April. Tilapias was introduced from Africa to lake Alaotra at the beginning of the 20th century. They certainly improve the meals of the people living around the lake.

11 Madagascar - AlaReLa project 08 La pose de l adolescent! Le tabac fait des ravages à Madagascar comme ailleurs dans le monde. Teenage attitude! Tobacco is ravaging Madagascar as it is everywhere else in the world.

13 Madagascar - AlaReLa project 10 Même dans le grenier à riz de Madagascar, la riziculture est encore peu mécanisée. Cette jeune fermière compte sur le vent pour séparer les grains de la paille. Even in the rice granary of Madagascar, rice production is barely mechanized. This young farmer relies on the wind to separate the grain from the straw.

14 Madagascar - AlaReLa project 11 Parents malheureux que ceux qui n ont de filles pour chercher de l eau, disent les riverains du lac Alaotra. Cette enfant fera un boudin de son écharpe qu elle posera entre sa tête et le seau rempli de 10 litre d eau. Alaotra people have a saying: unhappy parents are those who do not have girls to go fetch water. This kid will make a doughnut out of her scarf and use it to carry the 10L water bucket on her head

15 Madagascar - AlaReLa project 12 La pesée du riz sur une bascule aux normes. Ici, le riz est aussi une culture de rente. Les Malgaches sont parmi les plus grands consommateurs de riz du monde avec une moyenne annuelle de 140 kg par habitant. Rice weighing on a scale. In the Alaotra rice is a cash crop. Malagasy people consume the largest volume of rice in the world, with an annual mean of 140kg per inhabitant.

16 Madagascar - AlaReLa project 13 Les jeunes enfants sont le plus souvent sevrés à la naissance du benjamin. Le taux de natalité de Madagascar était un des plus élevés du monde mais connait une baisse depuis la fin des années Young kids are usually weaned when the next kid is born. The birth rate in Madagascar was one of the world's highest but has been decreasing since the 1990s.

17 Madagascar - AlaReLa project 14 Les garçons jouent, les filles travaillent, mais ici une petite fille souriante fait l exception. Par rapport à l Afrique, les taux de scolarisation des enfants malgaches sont élevés et une grande parité entre les filles et les garçons est observée. When boys play, girls work. A little girl makes a happy exception. In Madagascar, compared to Africa, school enrolment rate is fairly high and gender equality is enforced.

18 Madagascar - AlaReLa project 15 Les filles participent aux tâches domestiques à un jeune âge. On achète ici la cuillerée d huile pour le seul repas du soir. Girls participate in household chores from a very early age. Here one can buy a spoonful of oil only for tonight's dinner.

19 Madagascar - AlaReLa project 16 Taxi-moto : Le transport formule taxi-quelque-chose, du taxi brousse au taxi-vélo en passant par le taxi-moto. Taxi-moto: Transportation is available in several taxi-something forms, from the taxi-brousse or bushtaxi to the taxi-vélo or bike-taxi, including the taxi-moto or motorcycle-taxi.

20 Madagascar - AlaReLa project 17 Les kalachnikovs essayent de s inviter à la fête qui est bien paisible. Les débordements lors des meetings restent l exception, malgré les crises politiques à répétition des dernières années. Kalachnikovs try to crash a pretty peaceful party. Riots during these meetings are still exceptional despite increasing political crises in the past few years.

21 Madagascar - AlaReLa project 18 La vie rurale s égrène au rythme du marché, mis en place aux aurores, il cadence le quotidien des villageois. Les marchés ruraux peuvent être journaliers, les plus grands sont hebdomadaires. Rural life is paced by the markets: set at dawn they rhythm the everyday routine of the villagers. Rural markets can take place daily; the largest occur weekly.

22 Madagascar - AlaReLa project 19 Le paddy s accumule prêt à être décortiqué puis exporté. L Alaotra exporte une grande partie de sa production rizicole, plus particulièrement vers la capitale Antananarivo. "Paddy" (unmilled rice) is accumulating, ready to be split apart and exported. Alaotra region exports most of its rice production, especially to Antananarivo, the capital.

23 Madagascar - AlaReLa project 20 Une partie sur le chemin de la maison. Les plus grandes épiceries financent ces babyfoots made in Alaotra qui regagnent les échoppes à la nuit tombée. Chaque pièce est unique. A quick game on the way home. The largest grocery stores fund the foosball tables, all made in Alaotra (or sometimes made a gascar!) and take them back at nightfall. Each table is unique.
