Introduction Our Middle School prides itself on its outstanding staff and student body. Over five hundred children from more than a hundred countries learn, work and play together. The lessons learned go far beyond the individual classrooms, perhaps someday helping to make the world a better place. The Middle School is organized from class 5 to 8 with two languages of instruction, French and English. The same philosophy and objectives are shared throughout the school. The annual enrolment fluctuates between 540 and 576 students, distributed across 25 classes. The classes are taught by both full time and part time teachers, some of whom teach in other sections of the school foundation. Our staff also includes a counselor, Student Services Coordinator, a librarian/mediathèque specialist, an assistant librarian, office support and administrative staff, one care taker and a laboratory assistant. The Middle School building is called Les Cèdres and consists of 25 classrooms. There are two computer rooms, six common areas, two music rooms, 12 activity rooms, an E.S.L. centre, ESL support centre, learning support centre, 2 art workshops and a library/mediathèque (English and French). Numerous other rooms include offices and a large central hall which is used for assemblies, performances, concerts and meetings. Besides having its own building, the Middle School shares the use of the science laboratories, the physical education building and the cafeteria with the Secondary School. History The International School of Geneva (La Grande Boissière) was created in 1924 with six primary School students. As the school grew, a middle school was organized to cover the four years from classes 5 8. These classes became known as M1 M4. This organization lasted until the 1960 s. The opening of the school Les Cèdres in 1980 is a return to this original concept. Objectives and Educational Priorities The philosophy and objectives of the Middle School are first and foremost those defined by the Foundation's Charter. Our educational goal is to strive for excellence and to provide an environment which nurtures the pleasure of discovery, learning, expression and communication, thereby maximizing the intellectual capacity and sensitivity of each student. 1 -
The Middle School also has specific objectives. Inserted between Primary School and Secondary School, its purpose is to provide a smooth transition from a system in which one teacher is responsible for almost all of the student's academic life to another in which each individual subject is taught by a different instructor. Pastoral Care Homeroom Teachers Pastoral care is provided by a team of homeroom teachers supported by the administrative and educational support staff. The goal of this program is to meet the needs of students whose age range coincides with the transition period from the end of childhood to adolescence. This rapid development demands educational commitment and awareness, sympathetic understanding, fair and firm discipline and consistent attention. Within this framework, young people in our care will evolve independently, responsibly and be aware and respectful of themselves and others. Study and Life Skills A successful educational program has, at its core, life and study skills which support the personal development of growing students. In order to follow a rigorous academic curriculum successfully, the adolescent and young adult needs more than excellent subject teaching. The ongoing help, guidance and education provided by life and study skills are necessary for students to reach their academic potential and become lifelong learners. A weekly program taught by the homeroom teachers allows for the close follow up of each student. One of the many topics for discussion is that of living in a society, which of course includes the school community, students, their families and teachers. Curriculum Development Ongoing curriculum development in the Middle School is based on a philosophy of education which emphasizes international education and student centered, integrated approaches. The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme serves as a reference for our curriculum and inter disciplinary activities are increasingly being integrated into our school's curriculum. Through consistent and regular evaluation, the Middle School strives to provide a program which motivates students and is relevant to the world in which we live. 2 -
Programs From the very beginning, the Middle School made a commitment to offer two languages of instruction: French and English. In our Secondary School, students with a good level in both languages can choose a subject and the language in which they wish to study it, studying towards the International Baccalaureate. Therefore, a major goal of the Middle School must be to prepare our students so that they can take maximum advantage of these bilingual options in class 9. To accomplish this, we offer two programs: an English Language Program (E.L.P.) where French is taught by level as a second language and a Frenchdominant Bilingual Program (F.B.P or P.B.F.) where students use both French and English as their working language. Other courses such as Music, Art, Physical Education, and Creative Options are available to students in both languages. In addition students study a third language, German or Spanish, from class 7 onwards. The English Language Program Students in the English Language Program (E.L.P.) use English as their working language for all subjects and take French for five periods per week. There are also some music and physical education periods taught in French. (See tables Organization of courses/organisation des cours) In classes 5 and 6, the teachers at each level work closely as a team. The students spend 18 periods per week with their homeroom teacher and have one course (Humanities) taught to them by another member of the team. This gradual "departmentalisation" allows for an easier transition when they enter class 7. It gives the children the opportunity to acquaint themselves with more than one teaching style and allows for more than one teacher to evaluate the progress and growth of each child. In classes 7 and 8, each subject is taught by a different teacher. At this time, students also begin studying a third language. Each class has a homeroom teacher, one of their subject teachers, who spend an additional two periods per week working on Study and Life Skills (See Pastoral Care) with the homeroom group. This homeroom structure is central to the Middle School ethos as the homeroom teacher, working closely with the class level team, guides and advises the students developing autonomy in academic, organisational and social skills. Small intensive English as an Additional Language class (E.A.L.) exists for those children in classes 5 6 and 7 8 who have little or no skills in English. Students in this class join their homeroom group for Physical Education (in classes 5 and 6) and for Physical Education, Mathematics and, progressively, Science (in classes 7 and 8). Students are fully integrated into the mainstream classes when their level of proficiency is such that they can access the mainstream curriculum with some ongoing support. 3 -
The French Bilingual Program The objective of this program is to offer students the possibility of not only studying two languages, but studying subjects in these languages. In classes 5 and 6, this is organized by having a mother tongue French and a mother tongue English teacher share a class. In classes 7 and 8, English, History and Geography are taught by the same Anglophone teacher. A support system, very intense at the beginning of the school year, allows beginners to progressively develop their skills in order to follow the subjects in the language in which they are taught. Placement of Students Classes are formed by maintaining a balance between boys and girls, numbers, ages, learning needs, various ethnic groups, nationalities and mother tongues, thereby ensuring heterogeneity appropriate to middle level education. New students entering are carefully evaluated through their records and, if necessary, are tested to ensure as accurate a grade placement as possible. As the International School of Geneva welcomes children from over 100 different national systems with varying cognitive and affective criteria, initial placement can be complicated. Therefore, students are closely followed and evaluated by the team of teachers they work with to ensure that they are in the correct group. Our program strives to offer the flexibility needed to support a diverse student population like ours. Testing All Class 5 ELP students, as well as new students in class 6 and 7 ELP, are given the Cognitive Abilities Test, 2nd Ed. (Nfer Nelson, 1998). The purpose of this screening is to gain a more complete picture of the class as a whole, and each individual student s strengths, and weaknesses. For students experiencing learning difficulties, supplementary testing is administered. A support program exists for pupils who, for one reason or another, need extra help to follow their academic studies. This support is provided within the school timetable or through the learning opportunities program and, occasionally, external private tutoring is recommended. Discipline Discipline in Les Cèdres is closely tied to the philosophy and values of the school. Appropriate behavior in all aspects of living with others, in dress and in overall conduct, is expected at all times. A major component of our Pastoral Care program is continual dialogue on the issues of respect, tolerance, kindness and relationships with others. 4 -
The rules and regulations of the middle school are laid out in the Middle School Behavior Contract. This document was written by the teachers, parents and students in order to create an environment of respect and dignity for all members of the middle school community. These rules are discussed in assemblies and homeroom classes, especially at the beginning of each school year. Student Council The Middle School student council comprises one representative from each homeroom group, of whom a small, democratically elected group forms the Joint Assembly. The Student Council is responsible for a variety of activities within the life of the school, including organizing social events and activities, coordinating Middle School community service and charity activities, and forming the core of our peer mediation programme. Assessment of Student Learning and Performance Students are evaluated in a variety of ways throughout the school year in order to improve student learning and instruction and to measure student performance. Two formal reports are sent home during the school year and, in addition to this, parents are informed of their child s progress at midterm. In class 7 and 8, a semester grade is included in the formal report. This grade is based on the marking scheme below which relates to the International Baccalaureate, ranging from 1 to A consistent and thorough understanding of the required knowledge and skills and the ability to apply them almost faultless in a wide variety of situations. Consistent evidence of analysis, synthesis and evaluation where appropriate. The student consistently demonstrates originality and insight and always produces work of high quality. Minimal achievement in terms of the objectives. 5 -

Mathematics / Mathématiques (Year 5/6) (English Language Program & Programme Francophone Bilingue) Mathematics is universal. It is a language of communication, a major intellectual discipline and a tool for use in many aspects of life. Organization / Organisation: Year 5 & 6 There are 6 periods per week. Students follow a common program, which allows them to work at a level suited to their background and abilities. Common Strands / Les Grands Domaines: 1. NUMBER SENSE & NUMERATION / LA NOTION DES NOMBRES ET NUMERATION Students develop their understanding of number by learning about different ways of representing numbers and about the relationships among numbers. They learn how to count in various ways, developing a sense of magnitude. They learn to grasp the concept of more and less relationships, part whole relationships, learn different ways of using numbers to represent equal quantities, explore the role of special numbers such as five and ten, and make connections between numbers and real quantities and measures in the environment. They learn to compute with fluency using paper and pencil calculations and by doing mental calculations. 14 -
2. GEOMETRY & SPATIAL SENSE / LA GEOMETRIE & NOTION D ESPACE Students learn to recognize basic shapes and figures, to distinguish between the attributes of an object that are geometric properties and those that are not, and to investigate the shared properties of classes of shapes and figures. Mathematical concepts and skills related to location and movement are also addressed in this strand. 3. MEASUREMENTS / LES MESURES Students begin to learn how to measure by working with non standard units, and then progress to using the basic metric units to measure quantities such as length, perimeters, areas, volumes, capacity, mass, and temperature. Skills associated with telling time and computing elapsed time are also developed. Concrete experience in solving measurement problems gives students the foundation necessary for using measurement tools and applying their understanding of measurement relationships. Estimation activities help students to gain an awareness of the size of different units and to become familiar with the process of measuring. As students skills in numeration develop, they can be challenged to undertake increasingly complex measurement problems, thereby strengthening their facility in both areas of mathematic. 4. PATTERN, ALGEBRA, & (FUNCTIONS) / LES SCHEMAS, L ALGEBRE & (LES FONCTIONS) One of the central themes in mathematics is the study of patterns and relationships. This study requires students to recognize, describe, and generalize patterns and to build mathematical models to simulate the behavior of real world phenomena that exhibit observable patterns. 15 -
A second focus of this strand is on the concept of equality. Students look at different ways of using numbers to represent equal quantities. Variables are introduced as unknowns, and techniques for solving equations are developed. Problem solving provides students with opportunities to develop their ability to make generalizations and to deepen their understanding of the relationship between patterning and algebra. 5. DATA ANALYSIS, PROBABILITY, and (STATISTICS) / L ANALYSE DE DONNEES, LA PROBABILITE et (LES STATISTIQUES) The related topics of data management and probability are highly relevant to everyday life. In this strand, students learn about different ways to gather, organize, and display data. They learn about different types of data and develop techniques for analyzing the data that include determining measures of central tendency and examining the distribution of the data. Students also explore probability by conducting probability experiments and using probability models to simulate situations. The topic of probability offers a wealth of problems that can provide a bridge to other topics, such as ratios, fractions, percents, and decimals. Connecting probability and data management to real world problems helps make the learning relevant to students. 16 -
Mathematics (Year 7/8) Year 7/8 English Language Program (E.L.P.) Mathematics is universal. It is a language of communication, a major intellectual discipline and a tool for use in many aspects of life. Organization Years 7 and 8 There are 5 periods per week. In class 7, students continue to follow a common program which allows them to work at a level suited to their background and abilities. In class 8, students work at either a core or extended level. Practical and investigative approaches are emphasized and a variety of practical materials and texts are available. Students are regularly evaluated for diagnostic and other purposes. At each class level, a support teacher is available to work with students, both inside and outside the classroom. Objectives The principal objectives of the Mathematics program are to encourage students to enjoy Mathematics by experiencing success in their individual work, to develop the ability to think and reason logically and to improve the skills which allow them to cope confidently with the Mathematics of everyday life. Throughout the course of their maths studies in Middle School, students will develop: numeracy ability to express arguments in a clear and logical manner, both orally and in written form competence and confidence in using Information Technology awareness of the transference of a learned concept to other situations As we follow a spiral curriculum, some topics are repeated throughout years 7 and 8. These are developed further at each year level. 17 -
