4 4 Le kinkeliba rapport d activité 2008 Édito du président Docteur Bernard Rouveix Co-fondateur du Kinkeliba Le Kinkeliba co-founder Notre association fête sa quinzième année. Confortée par une forte expérience acquise sur le terrain, elle affiche sa volonté de poursuivre sa participation au développement des régions enclavées du Sénégal oriental. L accès à la santé étant un droit universel fondamental, il est primordial de poursuivre l édification d établissements de santé de proximité dans les zones les plus fragiles. À ce jour, deux Maisons médicales sont opérationnelles. La Maison mutualiste de Sinthian fête déjà son dixième anniversaire. Elle a atteint son autonomie de fonctionnement grâce à ses remarquables résultats et à ceux de la mutuelle des planteurs de bananes (APSGG). Quelle réussite! Une équipe médicale sénégalaise performante implantée au plus profond de la brousse! C est la preuve incontestable qu il est possible d établir et de maintenir un médecin sénégalais en zone difficile. De nouveaux centres vont bientôt voir le jour. L éducation reste le deuxième axe fort du Kinkeliba. Plus de 300 filles et garçons, sont inscrits dans les jardins d enfants construits en harmonie avec l Inspection d Académie. Ils y apprennent les valeurs et devoirs de la vie communautaire, de l effort et du travail, mais aussi l hygiène. De nouveaux centres sont créés, souvent implantés auprès des Maisons médicales. Le merveilleux et chaleureux foyer de jeunes filles de Tambacounda s agrandit et recevra bientôt plus de 120 jeunes ado lescentes issues de milieux défavorisés de la brousse afin de leur faciliter l accès à l enseignement supérieur. Les garçons ne sont pas oubliés, ils auront bientôt le leur. Stimuler l économie populaire en aidant les opérateurs locaux est devenu le troisième axe fort du Kinkeliba. En agriculture, la ferme-école de Tilo-Tilo est entrée dans sa phase active et la première récolte de légumes, des oignons, aura lieu au début de l année Des prêts destinés à appuyer les jeunes entrepreneurs sont dorénavant accordés aux projets contribuant au renforcement des capacités techniques et organisationnelles du petit entreprenariat. L ensemble de ces activités a fait l objet d une première évaluation en novembre 2008 de la part des autorités sénégalaises conformément aux dispositions locales fixant les modalités d intervention des ONG au Sénégal. Dans la conclusion de ce rapport officiel, il y est souligné que «les réalisations médicales, socio-sanitaires et socioéducatives [du Kinkeliba] sont importantes et ont impacté positivement les populations la santé et l éducation des enfants et surtout le maintient des filles à l école se sont nettement améliorés.» Cette évaluation élogieuse traduit la remarquable compétence de ceux qui agissent sur le terrain. Il faut donc poursuivre le développement et l aide apportée aux populations pastorales établies dans la zone périphérique du parc national du Niokolo-Koba. Ce parc, d une superficie de hectares, fait partie des derniers refuges de la grande faune d Afrique de l Ouest. Il est classé au patrimoine mondial et réserve de la biosphère depuis Le développement socio-économique des populations qui vivent dans la zone périphérique participera à la meilleure conservation des écosystèmes présents dans le parc. «Le monde progresse grâce aux choses impossibles qui ont été réalisées» disait André Maurois. Des choses «impossibles» ont été réalisées dans la brousse sénégalaise. Elles l ont été grâce à l aide indéfectible et généreuse des donateurs qui nous ont fait confiance et qu il faut vivement remercier. Elles l ont été enfin et surtout, grâce au dévouement des membres actifs de l association qui ne comptent ni leur temps, ni leur peine, ni leur deniers et qui méritent toute notre admiration. Pr. 5 activity report 2008 Le kinkeliba 5 President s Editorial This year marks Le Kinkeliba s 15th anniversary. Reinforced by experience acquired working directly with remote communities in Southeastern Senegal, Le Kinkeliba continues its dedication to improving the overall quality of life within the region in which it operates. Access to healthcare is a fundamental, universal human right. It is therefore imperative to continue implanting health establishments in areas where care is needed most. To date, Le Kinkeliba s two main medical facilities are solid realizations of Le Kinkeliba s vision for healthcare delivery. Le Kinkeliba medical center in Sinthian celebrated its 10 th anniversary of operation. Its success is thanks in large part to local banana farmers association (APSGG) who are now able to operate Sinthian with complete financial autonomy. The presence of a Senegalese medical team is solid proof that it is possible to have doctors, nurses, midwives living and working in these challenging areas. New medical centers will soon open. Education remains the second pillar of Le Kinkeliba s core mission. More than 300 young children attend the network of Le Kinkeliba kindergarten facilities. Kids are taught the values and rules of community life, health and hygiene education. Plans are in place to replicate this model in conjunction with new Le Kinkeliba medical centers being planned. At the newly opened girls residential dormitory in Tambacounda, construction is already underway to double the dormitory s capacity to accommodate 120 girls in the 2009 school year. Girls there are able to avoid the early marriage and childbirth constraints of their villages and to access solid higher education. Plans are underway for the creation of a replica facility that will serve the adolescent boys of the region. The third pillar of Le Kinkeliba s mission is to aid the stimulation of the local economy. The farm-school located in the village of Tilo-Tilo is now fully active and the first harvest of vegetables onions is expected in Le Kinkeliba has recently established micro-loans designed to support young local entrepreneurs. Le Kinkeliba partnered with the Senegalese government in November 2008 to conduct a full review of its programs and operations. The official report published stated that: the medical, socio-sanitary and socio-educational realisations [of Kinkeliba] are important and have positively affected the populations health and children s education and above all, the behavior of teenaged girls at school have greatly improved... This official assessment is confirmation of the outstanding skill of all Le Kinkeliba members and employees working directly in the field in Senegal. Le Kinkeliba has expanded its commitment to serve the communities living around the border of the National Niokolo-Koba Park. The park, measuring approximately 2,300,000 acres, has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage and Biosphere Sanctuary since Le Kinkeliba s commitment to improving conditions in this area underscores its belief that the socioeconomic development of populations living directly around the park will contribute directly to better preservation of the park s delicate ecosystems. The world goes forward thanks to im possible things that have been accom plish ed said André Maurois. Impossible things have indeed been accomplished in the Senegalese bush. They have been made possible thanks to the unfailing and generous support of all Le Kinkeliba donors who have great confidence in us we thank them deeply. Finally, and above all, they would not have been possible without the devotion of Le Kinkeliba s members who operate in a completely volunteer capacity and receive no remuneration for their services. They deserve our greatest admiration.

6 6 Le kinkeliba rapport d activité 2008 Le Kinkeliba en quelques mots Le Kinkeliba est une association créée en 1995 qui intervient en premier lieu pour le développement médical, éducatif et économique dans les régions enclavées d Afrique, actuel le ment au Sénégal oriental. L association n est subordonnée à aucune considération politique ou religieuse La vocation de l association est de par ticiper au développement des populations les plus démunies, de façon impartiale et non-discriminatoire, en luttant par exemple contre la mortalité maternelle en couches et la mortalité infantile avant l âge de cinq ans. L association en gage des actions concrètes de déve loppement durable en faveur des populations les plus déshéritées et enclavées en brousse dans le respect des principes suivants : transparence, information et collaboration permanente avec les populations et les autorités locales et nationales ainsi qu avec les modes de vie des populations ; modestie et discrétion selon l engagement du serment d Hippocrate ; transfert à terme des réalisations aux populations locales. La stratégie de l association est de faciliter l implantation des médecins autochtones et de créer les conditions matérielles nécessaires à leur maintien en brousse. Les actions de l association, outre la santé qui est la clé de voûte de l ensemble des actions du Kinkeliba, couvrent les domaines suivants : l éducation, l agronomie et l économie rurale, c est-à-dire le développement en général. Les moyens financiers de l association sont d origine privée (cotisations et dons). La quasi-totalité (95 %) des aides reçues est réservée aux actions de terrain en Afrique. Tous les frais de mission (déductibles à 60 % de l impôt sur le revenu) sont à la charge des membres de l association. Engager des actions concrètes de développement durable en faveur des populations les plus déshéritées et enclavées en brousse.

7 activity report 2008 Le kinkeliba 7 Le Kinkeliba in brief The association is dedicated to participating in the development of populations in an impartial and nondiscriminato ry manner. Its fights to reduce maternal death from childbirth and infant mortality before the age of five. Le Kinkeliba is committed to en gag ing in concrete actions which facilitate longlasting development to support the most deprived and isolated rural populations of Eastern Senegal. It is guided by the following principles: transparency, information and long lasting collaboration with the people it seeks to support, as well as with local and national authorities principles that guide the lives of local according to the Hippocratic Oath. Le Kinkeliba s overall strategy is to transfer completed projects to competent local authorities. It works to facilitate the implantation of local doctors into the countryside by developing physical conditions necessary to support their work in the field. Besides health care, which lies at the heart of Le Kinkeliba s mission, the association also encompasses the following areas: education, agriculture, and local economic development. Le Kinkeliba works towards overall holistic development of the areas in which it operates. The financial means of the association are private in origin (membership dues and gifts). Nearly all financial support (95 %) is reserved for action on the ground. All mission costs (60 % tax deductible on revenue) are borne by members of the association. Founded in 1995, Le Kinkeliba is a nongovernemental organization which is solely dedicated to providing medical, educational and economic aid to one the most remote regions of Sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern Senegal. Le Kinkeliba never yields to political or religious pressure. To en gag e in concrete actions which facilitate long-lasting development to support the most deprived and isolated rural populations

8 8 Le kinkeliba rapport d activité 2008 Nos engagements Depuis plus de 13 ans, Le Kinkeliba a ainsi participé à l amélioration des conditions de vie. Il a su se fondre dans le tissu socio-culturel de la région du Sénégal oriental et il est particulièrement satisfaisant de constater la durabilité des actions entreprises. Certaines structures ont été transférées depuis plusieurs années à une autorité locale et fonctionnent aujourd hui de façon autonome et équilibrée : c est le cas de la Maison médicale de Sinthian. Vaincre la mortalité maternelle (1/13 en Afrique subsaharienne comparé à 1/4100 dans les pays industrialisés*) et sauver ces femmes admirables qui risquent la mort pour donner la vie ; pour chaque femme qui meurt en couches, une trentaine d autres subissent des blessures, des infections qui les altèrent définitivement. Réduire la mortalité infantile (40 % des enfants de l Afrique subsaharienne n atteignent pas l âge de 5 ans comparés à 1% des pays industrialisés); Développer les infrastructures nécessaires à l implantation des médecins africains au bénéfice des populations en grande précarité dans les régions géographiquement isolées pour lutter contre la pauvreté. Lutter contre l analphabétisation et faciliter l accès à l éducation; construire en ville des foyers d hébergement pour les jeunes filles et les jeunes garçons issus de la brousse. Agir en synergie et harmonie avec les autorités compétentes locales. Voilà en quelques lignes quelles sont nos engagements sur le terrain, actuellement le Sénégal oriental. * Source Unicef 2000

For all who die in childbirth, an additional 30 are wounded or infected in ways that permanently change them. To reduce infant death (40 percent of children in sub-sahara Africa do not reach the age of 5, compared to 1 percent in industrialized countries.) To develop the necessary infrastructure for the implementation of African medicine for the benefit of populations which are at high risk due to their geographic isolation and economic disadvantage. To fight against illiteracy and improve access to educational opportunities; to construct and foster kindergartens as centers of learning in village bush communities. Here within are our current commitments on the ground in Eastern Senegal. * Source Unicef 2000 For the past 13 years, Le Kinkeliba has participated in the overall improvement of the conditions of local life. It has been able to incorporate itself into the local socio-cultural fabric of the region of Eastern Senegal which is evident in the continued success of its presence in the area. Certain structures which were transferred years ago to the supervision of the local authority are today working well and with a great amount of autonomy: Le Kinkeliba s Medical Center in the village of Sinthian is an exemplary model of this process.

Plus de consultations y ont été données en Le nombre d adhérents à la mutuelle atteint 533. Le montant des cotisations est de Ces cotisations permettent de payer les salaires de l équipe médicale. Le bilan est positif avec un bénéfice de euros. Le Kinkeliba a en outre pris en charge les travaux de réfection de plusieurs bâtiments investissant À la Maison médicale Pierre-Fabre de Wassadou, le début de l année 2008 fut difficile en raison du départ du Docteur Valentin Zida mais l arrivée du nouveau médecin, le Docteur Cheikh Tidiane Gueye en mai 2008, a été à l origine d un prompt rétablissement. Trois décisions importantes ont permis d augmenter activité médicale : la baisse du prix des consultations, l achat et la mise en place d un bus de ramassage des patients et une sensibilisation accrue dans les villages. La direction administrative de l établissement a été transférée à Pascal Keïta qui le gère avec talent et compétence. Le nombre de consultations atteint En maternité, il y a eu consultations soit 22% de plus qu en On décompte 82 accouchements in situ et 62 suivis à domicile. Le programme de vaccination en brousse (1 315 actes) se poursuit sous la responsabilité d Anne-Marie Sene, sagefemme, en collaboration directe avec le médecin chef de district.

11 rapport d activité 2008 Le kinkeliba 11 Il y a eu 423 hospitalisations avec un pic en septembre en raison du paludisme. Le proche recrutement d un nouveau dentiste devrait dynamiser les soins dentaires. Sur le plan financier, les recettes s élè vent à contre de dépenses. L équipement Pour faire face à un développement accéléré, un dépôt de matériel Eiffage- Kinkeliba a été construit sur un terrain à Tambacounda (coût : ). Cette structure comporte des hangars (menuiserie, électricité, plomberie, serrurerie, appareils sanitaires, carrelages, bambous, paille, fer et bois, petits et gros outillages), une case d administration, un garage, des toilettes, un mur d enceinte et de retenu pour sable et gravier ; le tout est desservi par une voie de circulation avec rond-point et éclairage. Pratiquement achevé, ce dépôt de matériel construit est dirigé d une main de maître par l entrepreneur Alioune Niang, Badou. Il témoigne du savoir faire et de la qualité des équipes en charge des constructions du Kinkeliba. L éducation Au jardin d enfants de Nienéméké, l effectif dépasse 130 élèves. Il a donc été décidé de construire une troisième classe ainsi qu une cuisine. La pompe manuelle du puits a été remplacée par une pompe solaire. Par ailleurs, des arbres fruitiers vont apporter un complément alimentaire gratuit aux enfants. Le dossier d autorisations préalables à la construction du jardin d enfants de Sinthian progresse bien. Ce type de dossier est toujours un peu fastidieux à constituer considérant les nombreuses étapes administratives à franchir : création d un comité de gestion, lettre du propriétaire du terrain au profit du village pour l usage exclusif d un jardin d enfants, accord écrit du comité rural autorisant la construction, bornage du terrain par le cadastre, permis de construire, information de l inspecteur de la petite enfance parcours indispensable si l on veut agir dans les règles. Le coût s élève à financés par AFLK. Enfin, au Foyer de jeunes filles de Tambacounda, un puits a été foré afin de parer à une éventuelle défaillance de l eau de ville (5 800 ). Ce foyer sera baptisé du nom de Mba Yakhara Fofana. L agriculture La ferme école de Tilo-Tilo progresse remarquablement bien grâce au travail de Bruno Richomme avec le soutien renouvelé du groupe Soufflet. Au détour de la piste d accès, on découvre les 20 hectares en bordure de Gambie entretenus par une quinzaine d ouvriers qui, sous l experte direction de Pierre M Dour, lui-même supervisé par Maximilien Pouille, relèvent un formidable pari. Une motopompe de 100m 3 /h (Bernabé) permet de puiser l eau du fleuve. Trois cases d habitations ont été construites dans le respect des marques du Kinkeliba. Un puits, un château d eau, une pompe solaire et un système performant d irrigation sont opérationnels (coût : ). On espère bientôt récolter 70 tonnes d oignons, premier légume consommé au Sénégal, pour un profit de euros. En regard, le coût d exploitation de la ferme s élève à Côté vergers, arbres fruitiers ont été plantés (citronniers, orangers, mandariniers, goyaviers, corossoliers, avocatiers, kumquats, tamariniers, manguiers et pomelos). Ils devraient donner les premiers fruits dans 2 ou 3 ans. Projets industriels Cette nouvelle activité a pour objectif d accorder des prêts financiers aux entrepreneurs porteurs de projets ayant un fort potentiel de développement économique et d embauche locale. Un prêt de a été accordé à un jeune entrepreneur de Tambacounda pour son projet d installation de kiosques de pièces détachées neuves à Tambacounda. D autres projets sont en cours d éva luation. Née en 1855, Mba Yakhara Fofana était femme dotée d une grande personnalité, se distingant, à Tambacounda, par ses qualités humaines. Tradipraticienne, elle prodigua ses soins aux enfants et à leurs mamans avec dévouement et générosité. Respectée et aimée de tous, elle a laissé un souvenir profond dans la communauté.

12 12 Le kinkeliba activity report 2008 Annual report 2008 Medicine The number of people receiving medical care through Le Kinkeliba s mutual health insurance medical center in the village of Sinthian continues to rise. More than 6,200 medical services were provided in The mutual health insurance program s membership reached its highest total ever of 533 participants, who contributed a total of 14,900. These contributions went directly towards the salaries of Sinthian s medical team. The year-end balance sheet showed a positive balance surplus of 5,131, which will be put directly into the 2009 operating budget. Additionally, Le Kinkeliba oversaw the repair and renovation of several buildings at the Sinthian center, investing 11,000 into the project. At Le Kinkeliba s Pierre-Fabre medical center in the village of Wassadou, the beginning of 2009 was a difficult time due to the departure of Chief Doctor, Valentin Zida. Fortunately, with the arrival of new Chief Doctor Cheikh Tidiane Gueye in May 2008, the Wassadou facility has quickly regained its focus. On another positive note, overall medical activity at the Wassadou facility increased greatly in 2008 as a direct result of three key operational changes: general consultation fees were lowered; a patient transport bus was purchased to reach residents of remote communities; and a well-received campaign to increase villagers awareness of the Wassadou facility was launched. On a final staffing note, Wassadou s overall administrative operation is now run by Pascal Keita, a gifted and skilled manager. At Wassadou, the number of medical consultations totalled 7,422. There were 1,538 maternal health consultations an increase of 22% from In total, the maternal health ward at Wassadou oversaw 82 healthy childbirth deliveries in situ, with an additional 62 performed with the aid of a Le Kinkeliba midwife in the surrounding villages. Le Kinkeliba s mobile rural vaccination program, overseen by midwife Anne-Marie Sere in coordination with the district s Chief Medical Doctor, carried out 1,315 total vaccinations. There were 423 hospitalizations at Wassadou, with a peak in the month of September, because of malaria infections. With the recent addition of a full time dentist to the Wassadou medical staff, Wassadou should experience a rise in the number of dental patients and procedures administered. On the the financial level the account balance of the Wassadou Medical Center is 45,800, the total of its expenses is 129,244. Equipment With the large number of Le Kinkeliba building projects underway, and many more on the horizon, the Senegalese-based construction company and long time Le Kinkeliba supporter, Eiffage has aided in the creation of a materials lab and depot in the town of Tambacounda. The total cost for this project is 40,000. This facility consists of a series of workshops specializing in carpentry, electricity, plumbing, sanitary appliances, tiling, as well as specific material

13 activity report 2008 Le kinkeliba 13 storage for bamboo, straw, iron, and wood. The complex also houses an administrative office, garage, and enclosed storage spaces for key construction materials such as sand and gravel. The entire compound is overseen by Le Kinkeliba s entrepreneur Alioune Niang, Badou. When complete, this site will be the nexus of Le Kinkeliba s network from which all future projects will stem. It will stand as a testimonial to the skill and quality of Le Kinkeliba s holistic approach to service delivery. Education In one of the newest Le Kinkeliba kindergartens, located in the village of Nienéméké, enrolment has currently peaked at more than 130 students. This great demand for early education in the local area necessitated the construction of a third classroom in addition to an on-site kitchen at the school. The manual-pump well was replaced by a solar pump and fruit trees were planted on school grounds which will add additional nutritional supplements to the children s diets. The newest kindergarten in the Le Kinkeliba network is currently under construction in the village of Sinthian, the site of Le Kinkeliba s first medical center. The project continues to progress well, however a new construction of this type is never an easy undertaking. There were many administrative steps to cover before construction could begin which included: creation of a management committee; receipt of a letter from the local landlord authorizing use his land for the sole benefit of a kindergarten; written agreement from the rural committee authorising the school s construction; various planning permissions; and approval by the local inspector all of which are essential ele ments in order to complete a project of this nature in compliance with the local regulations. The total cost for this kindergarten was financed by the American Friends of Le Kinkeliba for a cost of 50,000. Finally, at the Foyer des Jeunes Filles the status quo of the water in the city of Tambacounda had to be addressed and an entirely new well was created solely for the Foyer for the cost of 5,800. The Foyer named in honor of local Tambacounda resident Mba Yakhara Fofona. Agriculture The Tilo-Tilo farm-school is progressing remarkably well, thanks to Bruno Richomme and to the renewed support of the Soufflet company. The Tilo-Tilo facility is located at the end of a remote rural access road, alongside the edge of Gambia River and measures approximately 50 acres. The project currently has fifteen farmers working directly under the supervision of the skilled Pierre M Dour who operates in direct consultation with Maximilien Pouille. Together, this team is creating an unprecedented and unique farm-school facility which will continue to operate towards tremendous success. On the technical side of the project, a hydro-electric water pump operating at 100m3/hour (Bernarbé), makes it possible to draw water directly from the river for use on the field crops. Additionally, three living quarters for the resident famers have been built in accordance with Le Kinkeliba s architectural characteristics along with a well, water tower, solar pump, and a fully functioning irrigation system. The total costs of the project thus far are 58,800. The Tilo-Tilo farm-school project should yield 70 tons of onions, the most important legume in the Senegalese diet. The onion crop is soon expected to be harvested for a profit of 24,430 which works to completely offset the 15,500 operations cost of the project. Additionally, a total of 3,500 citrus fruit trees have been planted including lemon, orange, tangerine, guava, soursop, avocado, kumquat, tamarind, mango, and grapefruit trees. The trees should yield their first fruit within two or three years. Industrial plans The main objective of this new aspect of Le Kinkeliba s activities is to create financial loans for local entrepreneurs who carry strong potential to develop local economy and employment. Le Kinke liba has recently granted a 15,000 loan to a going entrepreneurtambacounda resident and long time friend to support his project of installing kiosks of spare auto parts in Tambacounda. Similar local social development projects are currently under assessment. Born in 1855, this incredible woman, Mba Yakhara Fofona, possessed a splendid personality and, through her work as a traditional practitioner, she provided medical treatment to children and their mothers with unique devotion and generosity. She was deeply respected and loved by everyone and left a deep imprint in the community of Tambacounda.

This was accompanied by the creation of Holiday Cards for each $25 donors gave, they received a holiday card which could be distributed to their friends and family. This was a good way for people to give a meaningful gift and also to introduce Le Kinkeliba to new audiences. Yale Medical School / Le Kinkeliba Collaboration On behalf of Le Kinkeliba, American Friends has made a connection with key members of Yale University s Medical School faculty. Discussions have begun on establishing a program in which Yale Medical School students travel to Senegal and work as resident physicians for the benefit of Le Kinkeliba communities. These highly motivated Yale medical students, from one of the world s top universities, will bring their knowledge to the field and be able to assist in a myriad of directly effective ways. Plans are in place for these discussions to continue in June of 2009, when further details will be discussed. Charcoal In the summer of 2008, ALKF began on-site production of all-natural, hardwood charcoal at the Albers Foundation s heavily wooded Connecticut location. The charcoal was packaged into attractive boxes, which tell the story of Le Kinkeliba, and sold at a local market and farm stand. It is our hope that for the spring and summer of 2009, these venues will sell the charcoal again. We are also looking to expand our distribution. All proceeds of the charcoal s sale go directly to the benefit of Le Kinkeliba Hilton Humanitarian Prize In November 2008, AFLK nominated Le Kinkeliba for the prestigious and highly competitive Hilton Humanitarian Prize awarded by the Conrad Hilton Foundation in California. This $1.5 million prize is given annually to recognize outstanding achievements in the fields of health and human rights. Although it is unlikely Le Kinkeliba will be awarded the prize this year due to the number of applicants, the nomination process alone serves to elevate Le Kinkeliba s identity within the large scale US philanthropic community Gates Award for Global Health Similarly, AFLK worked with Patrick Dewavrin to nominate Le Kinkeliba for the 2009 Gates Award for Global Health which is given annually through the Global Health Council. Hermès Donation As a result of its collaboration with the Albers Foundation, of which NFW is the Executive Director, on a series of luxury scarves replicating Josef Albers s iconic Hommage to the Square works, the Hermès Foundation made a 40,000 donation to AFLK. They have specified that they would like their donation directed to a Le Kinke-

It is our hope that these funds can be directed towards the construction of a new kindergarten at either the Wassadou or Goumbayel site. Sinthian Kindergarten Having received funding from two generous private foundations, AFLK has entirely funded the construction of the newest Le Kinkeliba kindergarten in Sinthian, slated for opening June The majority of this funding came from a wonderful London-based foundation, the Popli Khalatabri Charitable Foundation. The remainder of the funding was donated in the memory of Nick Weber s close friend Nick Ohly, who travelled to Senegal in May 2007 and was deeply moved by Le Kinkeliba s impact. Plans for 2009 Albers Auction Using the resources of the Albers Foundation, Nick Weber worked with auction houses Sotheby s and Christie s in New York to arrange the sale of two Josef Albers paintings in the May 2009 Spring sales for the benefit of Le Kinkeliba. The paintings will be included in the widely circulated auction catalogues, along with a descriptive paragraph and photo illustrating the wonderful work of Le Kinkeliba. Estimates for both paintings could yield $200,000. As 2009 moves ahead, AFLK plans to continue to raise support from our individual members. We will also be working to upgrade our own website so it continues to the most effective fundraising tool possible. In addition, we look forward to working in concert with Le Kinkeliba s goals to execute funding requests for specific projects such as the creation of a technology infrastructure for Le Kinkeliba sites; transportation solutions for patients in Sinthian and Wassadou; a Senegalese factory to produce malaria bednets; a Senegalese factory to produce effective drugs and medication, etc.
