3 FRENCH E-2 Intensive French II FALL 2013 COURSE DESCRIPTION: In Intensive Elementary French II, students will continue to build on their existing skills acquired in FREN E-I (or the equivalent). To practice reading, writing, speaking and listening, students will be exposed to a variety of authentic French and Francophone materials such as literary texts, articles, videos, songs and social media. Students will expand their vocabulary and use new language structures including the subjunctive and the past, future and conditional tenses through various communicative activities in class as well as at home assignments. Class will be conducted entirely in French. GOALS: The main ambition of this course is to maximize your learning of the French and Francophone language and cultures. By the end of this intensive course, students in French E-2 will be able to engage in simple conversations about people, places, relationships, personal life and interests. Students should be able to start speaking and writing in the past, present, and future tenses, make suggestions, express emotions, opinions, doubts, obligations and wishes. They should also be able to make requests and express hypothetical situations. Students will develop reading skills and expand their vocabulary through the reading of various texts that will allow them to understand better and learn more about the French and Francophone cultures. 4 REQUIRED WORK: 1. Participation and attendance:

5 French E-2 is an intensive course, which means that the pace of the class will be fast. One glance at the syllabus will show you that if you miss one session, you will miss a full chapter. As a consequence, you will inevitably fall behind in your work. In addition to that, you will not be able to participate actively in class, which is primordial to your learning process. In order to be able to participate actively in class, you have to come fully prepared: your job is to demonstrate that you will have studied the vocabulary and the grammar assigned. Your participation in the Facebook group (at least 3 interactions per week) will also be part of your participation grade. Your instructor will post at least one discussion topic related to a topic covered in class. 2. Homework: It is your responsibility to study the lessons in Contacts PRIOR to the class meeting for which they are indicated. The estudent Activities Manual (esam) provides exercises for the corresponding grammar units in the textbook. Students must complete the assignments BEFORE EACH CLASS, and submit their work online on the deadlines shown on the syllabus (on the quiz days). Late homework will not be accepted. 3. Quizzes: You will have 5 quizzes in total, that is to say 1 quiz at the end of every unit. You will be evaluated on your understanding of the vocabulary and the grammar, and also on your reading and listening skills. The course calendar includes the dates of all quizzes. Note that there will be no make-up for the quizzes. 4. Compositions: You will have three compositions of one page each (double-space) to write throughout the semester, that will focus on the development of your writing skills. Your instructor will grade the first version of your compositions, and point out the mistakes that you will need to correct for the second and final versions of your work. You will share your revised, improved and perfected masterpieces on Facebook with your fellow classmates. You will also be asked to read and record them as MP3 files, as pronunciation activities before the two oral exams.

6 5. Oral exams (2): You will have an oral midterm on Thursday, 24th October, individually scheduled with your instructor. There will be 2 parts for this exam: the first part will be a short presentation (5 minutes) of an object that reminds you of the French or Francophone cultures. During the second part of your oral exam, your instructor will ask you a few questions about the topics that you will have covered in class. Your final oral exam will be due for Thursday, 12th December. With a partner, you will write a script, act and record a short movie of approximately 7 minutes, about a topic of your choice chosen from a list that your instructor will provide you with. 6. Written exam (2): One written midterm on Tuesday, 22 nd October, and a final exam on Tuesday, 17 th December. These two exams will test you on your writing, reading and listening skills.
