GFC - 5 ème Réunion thématique Paris 2009 Urgonian-type carbonates are a characteristic feature of many late Early Cretaceous shallowmarine, tropical and subtropical environments. The presence of typical photozoan carbonateproducing communities including corals and rudists indicates the prevalence of warm, transparent and presumably oligotrophic conditions in a period otherwise characterised by the high density of globally occurring anoxic episodes. Of particular interest, therefore, is the exploration of relationships between Urgonian platform growth and palaeoceanographic change. In the French and Swiss Jura Mountains, the onset and evolution of the Urgonian platform have been controversially dated, and a correlation with other, better dated successions is correspondingly difficult. It is for this reason that a series of recently exposed sections were sampled (Eclépens, Vaumarcus, Neuchâtel), in addition to the Gorges de l'areuse section. The stratigraphy and sedimentology of these sections were analysed, and calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy, the evolution of phosphorus contents of bulk rock, a sequence-stratigraphic interpretation, and a correlation of drowning unconformities with better dated sections in the Helvetic Alps were used to constrain the age of the Urgonian platform. The sum of the data and field observations suggests the following evolution. During the Hauterivan, important outward and upward growth of a bioclastic and oolitic carbonate platform is documented in two sequences, separated by a phase of platform drowning during the late Early Hauterivian. Following these two phases of platform growth, a second drowning phase occurred during the latest Hauterivian and Early Barremian, which was accompanied by important platform erosion and sediment reworking. The Late Barremian witnessed the renewed installation of a carbonate platform, which initiated with a phase of oolite production, which progressively evolved into an Urgonian-type carbonate production under the inclusion of corals and rudists. This phase terminated at the latest in the middle Early Aptian, due to a further drowning event. GFC - 5 ème Réunion thématique Paris 2009 De tous les massifs subalpins septentrionaux, le Vercors est le seul qui offre des conditions d affleurement ayant permis d établir depuis trois décennies d excellentes corrélations entre la plateforme urgonienne et le bassin vocontien. Les faciès hémipélagiques de la bordure nord du bassin vocontien ont été datés par des ammonites, notamment au voisinage des surfaces d inondation maximales (maximun flooding surfaces = mfs). Certains de ces niveaux sont intercalés dans les faciès carbonatés de la bordure de la plate-forme urgonienne. Cette disposition très favorable permet de reconnaître niveau par niveau et sans ambiguïté la répartition stratigraphique des organismes, en particulier les foraminifères benthiques qui peuplaient les milieux peu profonds de cette plate-forme au Barrémien et à l Aptien inférieur. Au sud du Vercors, la présence d un intervalle transgressif majeur, dont la mfs (marnes de Font Froide) est située dans la zone à Gerhardtia sartousiana de la partie médiane du Barrémien supérieur, permet de subdiviser les carbonates de la plate-forme urgonienne subalpine en deux ensembles lithologiques : à la base la Formation des Calcaires de Glandasse et, au au-dessus, la Formation des Calcaires urgoniens qui correspond à une sédimentation dans des milieux oligotrophiques moins riches en nutriments que ceux du Barrémien inférieur. Alors que la première est pour l essentiel d âge barrémien inférieur, la seconde a été datée ou attribuée au Barrémien supérieur-aptien inférieur. Plus au nord, l analyse détaillée des coupes et de la falaise urgonienne qui se suit presque en continuité sur une centaine de kilomètres avait permis, en l absence de niveau à ammonites, de dater du Barrémien supérieur-aptien basal la Formation des Calcaires urgoniens du Vercors septentrional et des massifs subalpins situés plus au nord. Cette datation pouvait être contestée jusqu à une date récente car elle était fondée d une part sur l interprétation séquentielle et, d autre part, sur la répartition des orbitolinidés connus dans les séries datées par ammonites du Vercors méridional et du Diois. Elle est depuis peu confirmée grâce à l étude des calcaires urgoniens du Gard. Dans cette région en effet, la Formation des Calcaires urgoniens débute sans transition sur des marnes (marnes de Seynes) dont la partie sommitale a été datée par ammonites du sommet du Barrémien inférieur (zone à Coronites darsi de VERMEULEN). Au-dessus, la succession verticale des Orbitolinidés des Calcaires urgoniens du Gard s avère être identique à celle définie depuis longtemps dans l ensemble des massifs subalpins septentrionaux. Sur un autre plan, les corrélations établies, non seulement à l échelle de la séquence de dépôt mais aussi, dans certains cas, à celle de la paraséquence, permettent de mieux connaître l organisation géométrique des dépôts, d où une meilleure approche de la paléogéographie de la plate-forme et de son évolution. The majority of the published sections, during the Cenomanian-Turonian oceanic anoxic event, has been studied in the Atlantic, western Tethys and Western Interior, where black-shale production was at a maximum (KERR, 1998). These black-shale depositions are the result of an interruption of normal pelagic sediment deposition by several distinct intervals of widespread oceanic anoxia (SCHLANGER & JENKYNS, 1976; JENKYNS, 1980; ARTHUR et alii, 1990) coinciding with a positive shift in δ 13 C isotope excursion. Several studies show that the onset of the OAE 2 was triggered by a short-lived but significant increase in phosphorus burial (MORT et alii, 2007). The bottom waters became anoxic and switched from being a P sink to a P source, sustaining the productivity in a positive feedback loop. The behaviour of Total Phosphorus (Ptot) and trace metals at larger scale, away from main black-shale depocenters in different paleogeography and paleodepht is still poorly known. And how is expressed the OAE2 in outer shelf/slope environment of Tibet and the shallow carbonate platform of central Mexico? The Gongzha section (Tibet, China), located at the north margin of the Indian plate (SE Tethys), is characterized by monotonous hemipelagic marly limestones (Fig. 1b). δ 13 C data exhibit the classical C-T positive shift. 12 by a depletion at the end of R. cushmani zone, persisting up to the end of W. archaeocretacea zone. A similar P maximum is observed in W. Tethys & Central Atlantic sections, and appears therefore to be global, coinciding partly with increased detrital inputs. At Gongzha, trace-metals contents are under background level compared with sections characterized by strong anoxic conditions. Redox sensitive elements such as Va, Ni, Co, U, generally indicative of anoxic conditions, do not show any increase during the δ 13 C shift, suggesting that dysoxic rather than anoxic conditions prevailed in Tibet area during OAE 2. The Axaxacualco and Baranca el Cañon sections are located at the Guerrero-Morelos carbonate platform in southern Mexico (Fig. 1a). Its exhibit a correlateable δ 13 C curves. In the distal part of the carbonate platform at Axaxacualco, the maximum δ 13 C positive excursion coincides with oligotrophic carbonate platform environments, characterized by abundant and diversify benthic microfauna and rudists, confirmed by low concentrations in Ptot. The impact of OAE appears may be more significant in the proximal part of the carbonate platform at Barranca, characterized by the deposition of thich laminated microbialites indicative of mesotrophic conditions. The Morelos Carbonate platform with oligotrophic to mesotrophic conditions was persistent throughout the entire OAE2 in Central Mexico despite the closeness to the Carribean plateau. The definitive drowning, marked by the deposition of black shale and turbidites, occurs only in the lower Turonian (P. flexuosum), well above the end of the δ 13 C shift. Les carbonates marins de la formation Mishrif (Cénomanien moyen Turonien inférieur) se sont déposés dans des environnements de rampe peu profonde de faible énergie, avant la chute eustatique du Turonien moyen. Les environnements de dépôts passent latéralement de faciès de rampe interne à des faciès plus ouverts de rampe médiane. Ces faciès sont localement associés à des biostromes à rudistes très peu profonds et de plus haute énergie. Dans les faciès micritiques qui prédominent (mudstones à floatstones), l'hétérogénéité verticale et latérale des propriétés pétrophysiques (porosité, perméabilité, distribution des rayons de seuils de pores, ) semble étroitement liée aux variations de la micro-texture de la matrice micritique. La microporosité y est relativement constante, élevée (porosité jusqu'à 35%) et peut représenter jusqu'à 98% de la porosité totale mesurée sur plugs. La perméabilité est faible (inférieure à 1mD) à modérée (jusqu'à 100mD). Les observations en cathodoluminescence (CL), l'utilisation du microscope électronique à balayage (MEB) sur 240 échantillons, ainsi que des analyses isotopiques ponctuelles ont permis de caractériser les facteurs sédimentologiques et diagénétiques qui ont contrôlé les variations de micro-texture des matrices micritiques ainsi que les propriétés - réservoir qui leur sont associées. Nos résultats montrent que deux pôles micritiques (ayant leur cristallométrie, luminescence et propriétés pétrophysiques propres) peuvent être mis en évidence : (A) Les faciès micritiques avec les meilleures perméabilités (jusqu'à 100mD) ainsi que les seuils de pores moyens les plus larges (supérieur à 0,5µm) présentent généralement des micrites grossières (cristallométrie supérieure à 2µm), mal triées et peu luminescentes en CL. Ces micrites sont spatialement et chronologiquement associées à des phases diagénétiques précoces indiquant le développement d'une zone de lessivage (jusqu'à 30mètres d'épaisseur dans la zone axiale du champ) localisée sous la discontinuité du Turonien moyen. Ces phases diagénétiques sont (1) des cavités endokarstiques, (2) des calcites faiblement magnésiennes (LMC), faiblement luminescentes présentant de faibles δ 18 O et δ 13 C, (3) des golfes de corrosion entre les différentes phases de calcite. Dans la zone vadose, le développement des micrites grossières, peu luminescentes présentant des valeurs de δ 13 C négatives, est expliqué par une dissolution précoce des fines particules d'aragonite et de calcite magnésienne (HMC), permettant un nourrissage concomitant des surcroissances sur les particules de LMC (phénomènes d'ostwald rippening). (B) Sous la zone de lessivage, la plupart des facies micritiques sont associés à de faibles perméabilités ainsi qu'à de très petits rayons moyens de seuils de pores (respectivement inférieurs à 10mD et 0.5µm). 14 micritiques sont fines (cristallométrie inférieure à 2µm), assez bien triées et luminescentes en CL. Ce pôle micritique semble spatialement et chronologiquement associé au développement de calcites plus tardives et luminescentes (probablement précipitées sous un enfouissement modéré), et localement à une forte concentration en pyrite et en pseudomorphoses de sulfates, et à des δ 13 C positifs. Les particules micritiques sont généralement polyhédrales et ne montrent que rarement des traces importantes de dissolution. Ce pôle micritique peut donc être expliqué par une stabilisation minéralogique plus lente des micrites avec le néomorphisme des particules métastables (aragonite et HMC). Ce phénomène pouvant avoir lieu dans des eaux peu oxygénées, probablement après le dépôt des argiles du Laffan (Turonien terminal Coniacien inférieur) qui scellent le réservoir Mishrif. La distribution initiale de certains sédiments a nuancé la distribution dichotomique de ces deux pôles micritiques. Les sédiments initialement les plus fins et les plus argileux (déposés dans les environnements les plus calmes) ont entravé le renouvellement des eaux météoriques et engendré un confinement susceptible de différer la stabilisation minéralogique des fines particules en HMC et en aragonite. Ces micrites ont par conséquent été plus sensibles à la pressiondissolution lors de l enfouissement, altérant leurs propriétés réservoirs. A l opposé les sédiments bioclastiques initialement les plus grossiers ont favorisé le drainage des eaux météoriques et ont donc favorisé la genèse des micrites perméables du pôle grossier. 6

FERRY et alii, cette réunion), dans chaque séquence élémentaire, le faciès de piémont fluviatile rouge se superpose aux dépôts de plage, à mesure que ceux-ci se propagent vers le large en régime régressif. Ceci montre la généralité du modèle de dépôt sur cette marge cratonique. Un intérêt majeur de ces corrélations séquentielles à haute résolution est que l on peut mettre en correspondance stratigraphique précise, en l absence de marqueurs biostratigraphiques, les niveaux de plages calcarénitiques de l aval avec les principales intercalations polyséquentielles de faciès rouges de l amont. Par rapport aux séquences hauteriviennes décrites par ailleurs et citées ici en comparaison, les séquences génétiques «vraconno»-cénomaniennes comportent de fréquentes intercalations de gypse entre les faciès de plage régressif et les limons rouges continentaux. Cette variante indique une transition marin-continental de type lagunaire évaporitique qui n existe pas dans l Hauterivien, peut-être de climat plus humide. 16 High Atlas Mountains (Tamaloukt/Afansou north of Taroudant city) in the so-called Vraconnian bar (uppermost Albian) of authors allow to understand the relationships between marine and fluvial facies in 6 to 8 the short-term depositional sequences (genetic sequences) that make the sedimentary wedge at the Albian-Cenomanian (A- C) transition. In all genetic sequences the fluvial aggradation follows the seawardshift of the beach facies as it moves in a regime of stepped forced regression. The fluvial facies thus makes the upper part of the regressive half-cycle of the T/R sequence. Work in progress shows that this rule is also right for the overlying Cenomanian sequences, as well as for the upper Hauterivian Talmest Fm. in the same area (see FERRY et alii, this volume). One major interest of this study is that it evidences the possibility of doing very fine stratigraphic correlations, despite the absence of biostratigraphic markers, between packages of beach facies in the distal area, and packages of red fluvial facies upslope. Versus the Hauterivian sequences studied along the same transect, the upper Albian to Cenomanian genetic sequences may show intercalations of gypsum layers indicative of a lagoonal evapotitic transition between the marine and the full continental facies. GFC - 5 ème Réunion thématique Paris 2009 Résumé Dix-huit coupes corrélées depuis la côte actuelle jusque dans la partie centrale du Haut- Atlas, soit sur près de 200 km, permettent de décrire en détail le passage des séries entièrement marines aux séries totalement fluviatiles dans l Hauterivien supérieur de la Formation Talmest. L aggradation fluviatile dans cette formation suit la forte régression forcée de la fin de la zone d ammonites à Loryi sur la transversale Imsouane-Amizmiz. Le faciès rouge ensuite recule en quatre grandes étapes au cours de l Hauterivien supérieur avant l ennoyage barrémo-aptien, chaque étape étant constituée d un certain nombre de séquences élémentaires (séquences génétiques). Dans toutes les séquences génétiques, l aggradation fluviatile se met en place en régime régressif et aboutit à la progradation des limons rouges distaux du système fluviatile méandriforme sur les plages calcarénitico-gréseuses de bas niveau. Il est ainsi démontré que le concept adopté dans le modèle de stratigraphie séquentielle «exxonien» est valide (l aggradation fluviatile est provoquée par le déplacement vers la mer de la «bayline»). Ce concept n est pas nouveau car déjà formulé de façon très explicite par Élie de BEAUMONT, au milieu du 19 siècle. En revanche, le cas étudié invalide le concept adopté dans certains modèles de stratigraphie génétique (CROSS, HOMEWOOD, GUILLOCHEAU) où l aggradation fluviatile est supposée s effectuer au contraire en régime transgressif. Abstract Eighteen sections have been correlated from the present-day coast to the central part of the High Atlas, that is over about 200 km. It allows to describe in the very detail the transition from the western, fully marine to the eastern fully continental deposits making the upper Hauterivian sedimentary wedge (Talmest Fm.). The fluvial aggradation of the Talmest Fm. follows the strong forced regression of the beach facies at the end of the Loryi Ammonite Zone on the studied Imsouane-Amizmiz transect. Red deposits then backstep in four steps during the late Hauterivian before the Barremian-Aptian flooding, each step being made of a set of aggrading genetic T/R sequences. Within all genetic sequences of the Talmest Fm. The fluvial aggradation (meandering fluvial style) occurs during the regressive halfcycle. It is so demonstrated that the concept at the base of the Exxon sequence stratigraphy model (the fluvial aggradation is forced by the seawardshift of the bayline) is fully valid at the parasequence level. This concept is not new because already clearly formulated by Élie de BEAUMONT in France by the mid 19 th century. GFC - 5 ème Réunion thématique Paris 2009 Résumé La géométrie interne et les successions de faciès au sein des unités génétiques qui composent la série carbonatée des falaises du cirque d Archiane (Vercors méridional) remettent en cause (QUESNE & FERRY, 1995; QUESNE, 1998; QUESNE et alii, 2006) la séquence urgonienne classique où les faciès calcarénitiques, les faciès à cnidaires et les calcaires à rudistes sont supposés contemporains. Ces séquences sont au contraire formées des faciès calcarénitiques de bas niveau, d extension amont-aval réduite, surmontés par des faciès de plate-forme à cnidaires et rudistes d extension amont plus importante. Ces derniers sont interprétés comme des faciès d ennoyage modéré (20-30m?) de la plate-forme alors que les calcarénites à structures sédimentaires de houle constituent des prismes marginaux déposés à l occasion des chutes du niveau marin relatif qui ont exondés les calcaires à rudistes de la partie plate amont du système carbonaté. La séquence urgonienne classique est par conséquent remise en cause : la limite de séquence au sein des unités élémentaires passe sous les calcarénites à l aval et au-dessus des calcaires à rudistes d ennoyage à l amont. Cette particularité (faciès d ennoyage surmontés directement par une surface d émersion) s explique par la platitude du profil de dépôt qui ne permet pas la constitution d un prisme de haut-niveau progradant en chute du niveau marin relatif. Cette organisation séquentielle à haute fréquence se retrouve dans les grands clinoformes de progradation de la falaise orientale du Vercors entre Grenoble et Archiane (KHASKA, 2008). Elle montre la validité à grande échelle des observations réalisées à la périphérie sud de la plate-forme urgonienne. Les calcarénites "périurgoniennes" classiques sont constituées par l'empilement des prismes de bas niveau "externes" des séquences génétiques, alors que l'urgonien à l'amont est constitué par l'empilement des faciès d'ennoyage à cnidaires et rudistes, chaque couche étant séparée de la suivante par une surface d'émersion. L examen détaillé des géométries de progradation dans le cirque d Archiane met aussi en évidence des indices de fonctionnement de failles synsédimentaires de croissance qui perturbent la géométrie de progradation. 19 anytime in the depositional system. Thes genetic sequences are made instead with lowstand calcarenites followed by highstand coral and rudist facies. The lateral extension of lowstand calcarenites is restricted to the platform edge contrarily to that of the coral-rudist facies that cover a large part or the whole platform. This coral-rudist facies is thus interpreted as a flooding facies deposited at moderate depths (20-30m?), not as a inner platform facies protected by outer calcarenitic shoals, as in the current interpretation. In our interpretation, the so-called outer calcarenites represent a rim of swell-dominated deposits which is not coeval with the true Urgonian facies we interpret as open-marine instead, and deposited later. A true sequence boundary thus exists in any genetic sequence. This boundary is at the base of the calcarenites at the edge of the platform, and at top of the rudist facies on the platform. The fact that the open-marine flooding facies is directly overlain by an emersion surface is explained by the flatness of the platform profile which do not allows a prograding highstand wedge to be emplaced during the first stages of the sea level drop. The classical Urgonian sequence is thus based on a wrong application of the Walther s law because all facies do not coexist at any time in the depositional system. What has been previously found in the Archiane area is also right within the gentlysloped progradation clinoforms studied along the eastern cliff of the Vercors plateau between Grenoble city and Archiane (KHASKA, 2008). The outer peri-urgonian of authors do not represent the shoals that protected the inner platform rudist facies. FOURCADE (a specialist of large benthic foraminifers) and M. JAFFREZO (an expert on dasycladalean algae), who in 1973 (in BENEST et alii) published a first attempt to make use of this forms for boundary resolution at this level. It deals only with species of which the FAD* or LAD** is near the Tithonian-Berriasian boundary or has been reported as being so. * FAD: First Appearance Datum ** LAD: Last Appearance Datum Benthic foraminifers Anchispirocyclina lusitanica (EGGER) was formerly considered the best marker of the Tithonian for its range was thought to be restricted to this Jurassic stage. However its find by GALBRUN et alii (1990) in the M18 and M 18n of the Bias do Norte section (Portugal) documented its occurrence in strata of earliest Berriasian age. Stratigraphic ranges of the foraminifers cited below either span the boundary {Mohlerina basiliensis (MOHLER) [formerly Conicospirillina basiliensis MOHLER], Pseudocyclammina lituus (YOKOHAMA), Feurtillia frequens MAYNC} or their LAD is well below the upper limit of the Tithonian {Kurnubia palastiniensis HENSON, Everticyclammina virguliana (KOECHLIN)}, or their FAD is far above the lower limit of the Berriasian {Pseudotextulariella courtionensis BRÖNNIMANN, Pfenderina neocomiensis (PFENDER)}. Although not considered by FOURCADE (in BENEST et alii, 1973) Protepeneroplis striata WEYNSCHENK is a long-ranging species (it appears in the Aalenian) that in the current state of knowledge terminates in the Late Tithonian and hence should not be overlooked. A second representative of Protepeneroplis, P. trochangulata SEPTFONTAINE [Remark: according to one of us (I.I.B.), this species is a junior synonym of Hoeglundina (?) ultragranulata GORBATCHIK] is another long-ranging species (extinct in the Barremian according to BUCUR, 1993) that should merit our attention. Its first appearance seems to be Early Berriasian although HEINZ & ISENSCHMID (1988) tentatively correlated the strata containing this microfossil with basinal Tithonian strata. On the basis of this one indirect dating, some authors presume P. trochangulata to have appeared in the Late Tithonian. However, we retain the Berriasian FAD as a working hypothesis. If it is correct the find of an assemblage with both P. trochangulata and Anchispirocyclina lusitanica in Crimea, Ukraine (GRANIER et alii, 2009), would necessitate the assignement of an Early Berriasian age to these strata. The poorly known Dobrogelina ovidi NEAGU that spans the Berriasian and Valanginian stages (KRAJEWSKI & OLSZEWSKA, 2007) is another species with some biostratigraphical potential for it too is in the Crimean assemblage.
