2 iii ABSTRACT A reliable, continuous supply of electric energy is essential for the functioning of today's complex societies. Due to a combination of increasing energy consumption and limitations of various kinds impeding the extension of existing electnc transmission networks, these power systems are operated closer and closer to their limits. This situation requires a significantly less conservative power system control which, in mm, is possible only by monitoring the system state in much more detail than it was necessq previously. Fortunately, the required large amounts of information can be provided in many cases due to recent advances in telecommunications and computing techniques. There is, however, a lack in evaluation techniques required to extract the salient information and to use it for higher-order processing. The sheer quantity of available information being always a problem, the situation is aggravated in emergency situations when rapid decisions are required. The present work attempts to contribute to the solution of both of these problems in the area of power system static security assessment. Inspired by biological neurocomputing, artificial neural networks solve qualitative tasks like classification and data reduction as weli as quantitative tasks like interpolation and approximation. An evaluation of different neural network approaches for power system secunty assessment is presented in this work. The main objective of this thesis is the demonstration of the feasibility of the classification of transmission line load patterns for power system static security assessment using a special type of neural network, the Kohonen self-organizing feature map. The main advantages of this technique are discussed in this work. First, we show how the feature map regroups operating states into classes and generates, in an unsupewised process, prototypes for these classes, which can be interpreted as approximations of operating states. These approximations allow predictions of the effects of unforeseen outages on other power system busses and branches. They therefore yield quantitative results for overloads as weil as for under- and overvoltages thus avoiding computationally costly contingency analysis simulations. Second, we explore the feature map's capability to displays the security assessment graphicaily on a two-dimensional map thus yielding an immediate

3 iv Abstract qualitative visualization of the current operating state. 'Ihe characteristics of the class to which the current operating state belongs are revealed by the algorithm and need not be explicitly established in advance. Safe and unsafe operating situations can be quickly distinguished because the feature map displays these regions in different parts of the map. This synthesis of qualitative information, which is not provided by conventional methods, is essential in order to obtain a global assessment of large power systems. A further advantage of the proposed technique is its robustness with respect to erroneous or incomplete data with respect to unknown operating states. Measurements containing bad data are classified by the closest prototype state. Incomplete data can be handled by classifying only the measured known components. Finally we demonstrate the generalization capability of the proposed method. Trained with a lirnited number of known operating states, the Kohonen map not only successfuily classifies unknown operating states which have not been presented during the training phase but is also capable of forming new classes for vectors which do not faii in any of the trained categories. This powerful and versatile feature is especially useful for power system operation where it is impossible to simulate al1 possible system states off-line.

4 RESUME Une alimentation fiable et ininterrompue en énergie électrique est essentielle pour le fonctionnement des sociétés complexes d'aujourd'hui. A cause de la combinaison de l'augmentation de la consommation d'énergie électrique et de toutes sortes de limitations freinant l'extension des réseaux électriques de transport existants, ces réseaux sont exploités de plus en plus près de leur limite. Cette situation requiert un mode de conduite des réseaux beaucoup moins conservatif, qui n'est réalisable qu'à l'aide d'une surveillance de l'état du réseau beaucoup plus étendue qu'auparavant. Heureusement, la grande quantité d'informations nécessaires peut être obtenue dans bien des cas grâce aux progrès réalisés dans les techniques des télécommunications et de l'informatique. Cependant, les techniques de traitement de données permettant d'extraire l'information significative et de l'utiliser pour des traitements de plus haut niveau sont insuffisamment développées. Le traitement de grandes quantités d'informations devient d'autant plus difficile lorsqu'il faut prendre une décision rapidement. Cette situation se rencontre souvent quand le réseau électrique se trouve en état critique ou défaillant. La présente recherche propose une contribution à la solution de ces deux problèmes dans le domaine de I'analyse de sécurité statique. Inspirés par la biologie, les réseaux de neurones artificiels permettent de résoudre des tâches qualitatives comme des classifications et des réductions de données, de même que des tâches quantitatives telles qu'interpolation et approximation. Une évaluation de différentes approches basées sur les réseaux de neurones pour traiter le problème de l'analyse de sécurité est présentée dans ce travail. L'objectif principal de cette thtse est la démonstration de la faisabilité de classifier les caractéristiques des transits de puissances pour évaluer la sécurité statique des réseaux électriques, en utilisant un type particulier de réseau de neurones, la carte auto-organisatrice de Kohonen. Les principaux avantages de cette technique sont discutés dans ce travail. Premièrement, nous montrons comment la carte auto-organisatrice regroupe les états de fonctionnement en classes, et produit des prototypes pour ces classes. Ces prototypes peuvent être interprétés comme des approximations des états de fonctionnement, obtenus de manière non supervisée. Ces approximations permettent d'effectuer des prédictions sur les conséquences des déclenchements

5 vi Résumé imprévus d'éléments du réseau sur les autres branches et sur les noeuds. Elles produisent donc des résultats quantitatifs pour les surcharges et pour les subtensions et surtensions, évitant ainsi d'avoir recours aux simulations des analyses de contingences, coûteuses en temps de calcul. Deuxièmement, nous exploitons la capacité de la carte auto-organisatrice de représenter graphiquement sur une carte à deux dimensions l'évaluation de la sécurité, permettant ainsi une évaluation qualitative de l'état de fonctionnement actuel. Les caractéristiques de la classe à laquelle appartient l'état actuel sont révélées par la carte et n'ont pas besoin d'être établies explicitement à l'avance. Les situations sûres et vulnérables peuvent être facilement distinguées parce que la carte auto-organisatrice représente ces situations dans différentes parties de la carte. Cette synthèse qualitative de l'information, non disponible par les méthodes conventionnelles, est essentielle pour obtenir une évaluation globale d'un grand &eau électrique. Troisièmement, une importante propriété du réseau auto-organisé est sa robustesse par rapport aux données incomplètes ou erronées. Les mesures comportant des données erronées seront simplement classifiées par le prototype le plus voisin. Les données incomplètes peuvent être traitées en classifiant seulement les composantes connues par des mesures. Enfin, l'aspect le plus original et le plus important de l'approche proposée dans cette thèse est la propriéte de généralisation. Entraînée avec un nombre limité d'états de fonctionnement cornus, la carte de Kohonen classifie non seulement les états de fonctionnement inconnus qui n'ont pas étc présentés lors de l'apprentissage, mais génère également de nouvelles classes pour des vecteurs qui ne sont dans aucune des catégories apprises. Cette fonction puissante et variée est spécialement utile pour l'exploitation des réseaux électriques, où il est impossible de simuler tous les états préalablement.
