Aujourd hui, les réseaux électriques intelligents doivent permettre de relever un double défi : - faciliter l intégration des énergies renouvelables (dont une partie est variable et décentralisée) dans le mix énergétique, par exemple en développant des moyens de stockage ou de pilotage de ces productions, - maîtriser la demande d électricité par une connaissance plus précise de celle-ci, la mise à disposition des usagers de dispositifs de suivi de leur consommation d électricité, la mise en œuvre d effacements ou de tarifs incitatifs pour lisser les pics de consommation et faire coïncider au mieux offre et demande d électricité. La feuille de route de l ADEME consacrée aux «Réseaux et systèmes électriques intelligents intégrant les énergies renouvelables» a mis en avant plusieurs voies de recherche et de déploiement qui s articulent autour d innovations : - Technologiques, pour améliorer la connaissance de l état du réseau électrique et faciliter sa maintenance (nouveaux composants pour la localisation des pannes, reconfiguration automatique du réseau) mais aussi pour intégrer des sources de production décentralisées et variables (systèmes de stockage performants, pilotage de ces moyens de production). - Sociales et sociétales, pour aider l utilisateur à surveiller et à gérer sa consommation d électricité afin de l encourager à la maîtriser mais également pour mieux l accompagner dans l adoption des nouveaux services et produits offerts par les «réseaux intelligents». - À caractères économique et régulatoire, par l émergence de nouvelles activités industrielles et de nouveaux modèles d affaires. Pour accompagner ces évolutions, l ADEME a lancé un Appel à Manifestations d Intérêt pour des projets visant à lever des verrous technologiques ou des projets de démonstrateurs est actuellement ouvert et sera clôturé le 10 décembre 2012.
