Dissertation My thesis can be briefly summarized as follows : Chapter 1 is a survey of the urban residential location literature. Chapter 2 is an hedonic cross-sectional estimation of the Brussels residential market, i.e. an econometric estimation of rents as a function of 3 types of variable : housing characteristics, neighbourhood amenities, distance from the central business district. In chapter 3, we develop a game theoretic approach of the residential market in order to analyze the effects of strategic interactions of property owners on urban structure. Chapter 4 is a theoretic model of simultaneous agglomeration of firms and households. Chapter 5 deals with spatial competition of oligopolists within urban areas using the Hotelling model. We show that if this ** I was grantee funded by the Human Capital Mobility Network of the European Union.
spatial demand externality is sufficiently high in the central business district then minimum differentiation of locations occurs without any moderation of price competition (Bertrand outcome), in contrast to mainstream results in the literature. 15.
