CERN PROCEDURE DE RADIOPROTECTION RADIATION PROTECTION PROCEDURE PRP 7 MATERIEL DE RECUPERATION Le Manuel de Radioprotection CERN, Chapitre IV, 3.2, contient le paragraphe suivant : Les matériaux situés dans les tunnels des accélérateurs ou dans les zones des faisceaux primaires ou secondaires de forte intensité peuvent être activés au cours de l exploitation de ces installations. La personne qui retire ces matériaux de ces zones doit déterminer leur taux d activité ou le faire déterminer par le Groupe RP. Cette procédure donne des informations détaillées à ce sujet. RECUPERATION MATERIAL The CERN Radiation Protection Manual, Chapter IV, 3.2, reads as follows: Materials located in accelerator tunnels or primary or high-intensity secondary beam areas may become activated in the course of operation of these installations. The person removing these materials from these areas must determine their activity levels or ask the RP Group to make these measurements. This procedure gives detailed information about this subject. Il est évident que cette procédure concerne tout particulièrement les matériels et équipements envoyés au service de récupération pour être vendus et réutilisés au CERN ou à l extérieur ou pour être recyclés comme déchets. Pour assurer qu aucun matériel radioactif ne quitte les sites du CERN par inadvertance comme non actif, les consignes suivantes doivent être observées: 1. La Section Manutention lourde et Transport (ST/HM-TM) n acceptera de transporter du matériel et équipement des Divisions PS, SL, EST, PPE et ST qu après vérification de la radioactivité par le Groupe RP (Annexe 1). 2. Le matériel collecté pendant la tournée de ramassage du matériel hors d usage, effectuée tous les matins par l entreprise ORTEC, sera placé à un endroit spécial dans la zone de récupération, d où il ne sortira qu après contrôle par la section RP- Site. Pour éviter la présence d objets radioactifs dans les containers prévus pour le matériel de récupération dans les divers ateliers du CERN, les sections de surveillance RP au PS et au SL effectueront un contrôle hebdomadaire. 3. Sur demande le Groupe RP fournira une attestation pour certifier que les matériels expédiés vers l'extérieur sont non radioactifs selon la définition du chapitre IV du Manuel de Radioprotection (Annexe 2). It is obvious that this procedure in particular applies to material and equipment sent to the CERN recuperation service to be sold for reuse inside or outside CERN or to be recycled as scrap. In order to ensure that no radioactive material leaves the CERN sites inadvertently as inactive, the following rules must be observed: 1. The ST Heavy Handling and Transport Section (ST/HM-TM) will accept to transport material and equipment from PS, SL, EST, PPE and ST Divisions to the recuperation service only after a check for radioactivity carried out by the Radiation Protection Group (Annex 1). 2. The material collected during the daily collection rounds of scrap material by the firm ORTEC will be placed in a special location in the recuperation area, from where it will be released only after having been checked by the RP-Site section. To avoid the presence of radioactive items entering the containers for recuperation material at the different CERN workshops the local RP survey section at PS and SL will carry out a weekly check. 3. On request the Radiation Protection Group will provide a declaration to certify that the material shipped outside is not radioactive according to the definition of Chapter IV of the Radiation Safety Manual (Annexe 2). 3
