Projet complexe et mobilité Bien que gratifiés du même «oh! c est haut» dans le New York USA de Gainsbourg, le Pan American Building et le Rockfeller Center n ont pas eu la même réception. Conçu par Emery Roth & Sons aidés de Walter Gropius et Pietro Belluschi, le Pan Am Building suscita de vives critiques dès son inauguration en 1963, au contraire du Rockfeller Center (achevé en 1939, Raymond Hood architecte principal), perçu comme un symbole de la reconstruction qui fit suite à la grande dépression, qualifié de nouveau centre civique par Giedion et déclaré National Historic Landmark en 1988. A partir de ces deux exemples de gigantisme constructif, Inès Lamunière procède à quelques variations sur les thèmes de la taille critique, de la mixité d activités, des flux et espaces publics. Sa réflexion investit ensuite la ville, questionne le type de concentration et ses modèles sur le plan de la complexité (modèle de taille, d activités et de programmes, de flexibilité) et sur celui de la morphologie, à travers quelques ouvrages référentiels. En tant que requérante principale, elle assure la direction de ce programme doctoral et conduit les recherches consacrées au projet complexe et aux infrastructures.
