3 RCT8100 Programmable Thermostat Installation is Easy Your new thermostat has been designed for fast and easy installation. Just follow the simple step-by-step instructions in the following pages. Identify your system type. Remove your old thermostat. Identify the wires. Mount the new wallplate. Connect the wires. If the wire labels don t match. Specify the furnace type. Install the batteries. Install the thermostat. Set the system. 2

4 Quick Installation Guide Identify System Type This thermostat is compatible with the following systems: Gas, oil or electric furnace Central air conditioner a hot water system with or without pump a millivolt system a central heating and cooling system If you are not sure of your system type or if you have any other questions, call us toll-free at This thermostat is not compatible with heat pumps or multi-stage systems. 3

5 RCT8100 Programmable Thermostat Remove Old Thermostat 1) Turn power off at the heating/cooling system. 2) Remove old thermostat, but leave wallplate with wires attached. Do not remove wallplate yet. MERCURY NOTICE: Do not put your old thermostat in the trash if it contains mercury in a sealed tube. Contact your local waste management authority for instructions regarding recycling and proper disposal. 4

6 Quick Installation Guide Identify Wires If any wires are not attached to your old thermostat or are attached to a terminal marked C or C1, they will not be connected to your new thermostat. Wrap the bare metal end of each of these wires with electrical tape, so it cannot touch and short other wires. Do not use non-connected wires. Do not use C or C1 wires Identify and label each wire. IGNORE WIRE COLORS: Use terminal screw designations to identify wires. Disconnect wires and remove the old wallplate only after all wires are labeled. Wrap the wires around a pencil to prevent them from falling though the wall opening. 5

7 RCT8100 Programmable Thermostat Mount New Wallplate 1) Remove coverplate. 2) Loosen screw (the screw remains captive on wallplate). 3) Remove thermostat. 4) Mark and drill appropriate mounting holes (or use existing holes). Insert plastic anchors. Pass wires through opening of wallplate and secure wallplate to the wall using provided screws. Labels don t match? If a wire does not match any terminal on the thermostat, see next page. 6

8 Quick Installation Guide Connect Wires (typical wiring) Remove jumper if you have both R and Rc wires. Rh Rc W Y G M ) Match each labeled wire with the terminal having the same letter. 2) Loosen the terminal screws using a screwdriver, insert the wires, then tighten the screws. 3) Push any excess wire back into the wall opening. 7

9 RCT8100 Programmable Thermostat Connect Wires (less common wiring) If a labeled wire does not match any terminal designation, see diagram below. Do not use C, X or B. Wrap bare end of wire with electrical tape. If wires are connected to both Rh and Rc terminals, remove jumper (see previous page). 8

10 Quick Installation Guide Specify Furnace Type Set the Jumper J2, on the back of the thermostat, if you have connected a wire to the G terminal. J2 jumper HG HE Leave the jumper in this factory-set position if you have a gas or oil furnace. Place the jumper to this position if you have an electric furnace. 9

11 RCT8100 Programmable Thermostat Install Batteries 1) Pull out the battery cover. 2) Install the batteries as shown. Observe the polarity. 3) Reinstall the battery cover. You will hear a clicking sound. After the batteries are installed, the thermostat performs a series of tests for approximately 5 seconds. Afterwards, the screen displays the actual temperature. It is normal that the displayed temperature be higher than the ambient temperature if you are holding the thermostat. The thermostat will display the ambient temperature once it is installed on the wall. By default, the setpoint is 70 F (21 C). 10

12 Quick Installation Guide Install thermostat 1) Mount the thermostat on the wallplate. 2) Tighten the screw and install the coverplate. 3) Turn power back on at the heating/cooing system. 11

13 System Setup RCT8100 Programmable Thermostat 1) Press both and buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds to enter or exit the setup menu. 2) To advance to the next function, briefly press both and buttons simultaneously. 3) To change the setting, press the or button. DISPLAY DESCRIPTION OPTIONS 1 Temperature display C or F Time display 12 h or 24 h Early Start 2 On or Off Heating cycles per hour 3 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 4 Cooling cycles per hour 3 2, 3, 4, 5 or Default settings are shown in bold and underlined. 2 See page 3 of Operating Manual. 3 Use the system switch to switch between the two parameters. 4 For optimal heating control, use the setting that matches your system as follows: 2=30 min (steam, gravity), 3=20 min (hot water, 90%+ high-efficiency furnace), 4=15 min (gas or oil), 5=12 min (alternate setting for gas or oil), 6=10 min (electric). 5 The corresponding cooling cycle lengths are as follows: 2=30 min, 3=20 min, 4=15 min, 5=12 min, 6=10 min 12

19 Thermostat programmable RCT8100 Retirer l ancien thermostat 1) Couper l alimentation au niveau du système de chauffage/refroidissement. 2) Retirer l ancien thermostat mais laisser la plaque murale avec les fils attachés. Ne pas retirer la plaque murale à ce stade. AVIS RELATIF AU MERCURE : Ne pas jeter l ancien thermostat dans la poubelle s il contient du mercure dans un tube scellé. Contacter le responsable de gestion des déchets local pour les instructions concernant le recyclage et l élimination. 4

20 Guide d'installation rapide Identifier les fils Si des fils ne sont pas attachés sur l ancien thermostat ou sont attachés à la borne C ou C1, ils ne seront pas connectés au nouveau thermostat. Enrouler l extrémité dénudée de chacun de ces fils avec du ruban électrique, de sorte qu elle ne puisse pas toucher et court-circuiter d autres fils. Ne pas utiliser des fils non connectés. Ne pas utiliser les fils C ou C1 Identifier et étiqueter chaque fil. IGNORER LES COULEURS DES FILS : Utiliser les références des vis à borne pour identifier les fils. Débrancher les fils et retirer l ancienne plaque murale uniquement après avoir étiqueté les fils. Enrouler les fils autour d un crayon pour éviter qu ils ne tombent dans l ouverture du mur. 5

21 1) Retirer la plaque de couvercle. 2) Desserrer la vis (qui reste captive sur la plaque murale). 3) Retirer le thermostat. Thermostat programmable RCT8100 Monter la plaque murale neuve 4) Marquer et percer les trous de montage appropriés (ou utiliser les trous existants). Insérer les ancres plastiques. Faire passer les fils par l ouverture sur la plaque murale et fixer la plaque murale au mur à l aide des vis fournies. Les étiquettes ne correspondent pas? Si un fil ne correspond à aucune borne sur le thermostat, consulter la page suivante. 6

22 Guide d'installation rapide Brancher les fils (câblage typique) Retirer le cavalier si les fils R et Rc sont tous les deux présents. Rh Rc W Y G M ) Faire correspondre chaque fil étiqueté avec la borne marquée de la même lettre. 2) Desserrer les vis des bornes à l aide d un tournevis, insérer les fils, puis serrer les vis. 3) Repousser le fil en excès dans l'ouverture du mur. 7

23 Thermostat programmable RCT8100 Brancher les fils (autre câblage moins commun) Si un fil étiqueté ne correspond pas à la désignation d'une borne, consulter le schéma suivant. Ne pas utiliser C, X ou B. Envelopper l extrémité dénudée des fils de ruban électrique. Si les fils sont connectés aux bornes Rh et Rc, retirer le cavalier (voir page précédente). 8

24 Guide d'installation rapide Spécifier le type d appareil de chauffage Régler le cavalier J2 au dos du thermostat si un fil est connecté à la borne G. Cavalier J2 HG HE Laisser le cavalier dans cette position d usine si un appareil de chauffage à gaz ou à mazout est utilisé. Placer le cavalier dans cette position si un appareil de chauffage électrique est utilisée. 9

25 Thermostat programmable RCT8100 Installer les piles 1) Retirer le couvercle des piles. 2) Installer les piles comme indiqué. Respecter la polarité. 3) Remettre le couvercle des piles en place. Un cliquetis doit se faire entendre. Une fois les piles installées, le thermostat effectue une série de tests pour environ 5 secondes. L afficheur affiche ensuite la température actuelle. Il est normale que la température affichée soit supérieure à la température ambiante si le thermostat est tenu dans les mains. Le thermostat affiche la température ambiante une fois qu il est installé sur le mur. Par défaut, le point de consigne est 21 C (70 F). 10

26 Guide d'installation rapide Installer le thermostat 1) Monter le thermostat sur la plaque murale. 2) Serrer la vis et installer la plaque de couvercle. 3) Réactiver l alimentation sur le système de chauffage/refroidissement. 11

27 Thermostat programmable RCT8100 Configurer le système 1) Appuyer simultanément sur les boutons et pendant 3 secondes pour entrer dans le menu de configuration ou le quitter. 2) Pour passer à la fonction suivante, appuyer rapidement simultanément sur les boutons et. 3) Pour modifier le réglage, appuyer sur ou.
