3 Introduction (1) During the last years, explosion in the number of distributed applications (applications based on computer networks: local, wide, interconnection) remote process control, videoconferencing, video and audio distribution, distributed simulation, etc. Applications require guarantees on the performance (QoS) they get from the computers and from the networks computers: delay, delay-jitter, etc. networks: delay, delay-jitter, losses, etc. packet switched networks (switches/routers between the end-systems): IP, ATM

4 Introduction (2) In this context: identification of the mechanisms for the QoS provision modelisation and evaluation of the QoS relations between the QoS and the performances of the applications formal model based on Petri nets
