2 INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE SUPERVISOR AND THE TEACHER 2 INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE SUPERVISOR The group for a single session for this examination should not comprise more than 40 candidates. Ask whether any candidates have any difficulty in hearing. Such candidates should be seated as near as possible to the teacher. Ensure that the teacher reading the listening passages has a copy of this booklet. Ensure that each candidate has a copy of the French booklet. In no circumstances should the teacher see any copy of the candidates booklets before or while reading the listening passages. NOTE: Forty minutes is suggested for the listening assessment. Teachers should NOT be stopped if they exceed the 40 minutes. The timing of the various passages is to be done by the teacher. At the end of the listening assessment, candidates will continue with the other assessment activities for French Level 1. INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE TEACHER You should allow up to a maximum of 40 minutes for the assessment of French to provide sufficient opportunity for all candidates to complete the assessment. Begin reading at the point marked * at the top of page 3. Read out to the candidates all the material printed in italics, according to the instructions given. Read at a normal classroom learning speed. It is recommended that, as you complete each reading, you tick the box alongside the pause instructions. Details of the number of readings are printed in the candidates booklets as part of their instructions.

You have one minute to read Question One. 3 Pause 60 seconds QUESTION ONE: Arrival in New Zealand You will hear part of an audio cassette letter which a French exchange student, Sophie, has sent to her friends in France. You will hear the letter read three times. The first time you will hear it as a whole. Just listen to get the general idea. Then you will hear it twice more, in sections, for you to focus on the relevant details. There will be a pause after each reading. Answer the questions, in English, in the spaces provided. Your answers should be based on the information heard. You will be rewarded for providing: all the information requested detailed answers. Get ready to listen. Pause 5 seconds First reading Je suis arrivée en Nouvelle-Zélande il y a huit jours. Le vol était long et ennuyeux mais je ne pouvais pas dormir beaucoup alors j étais fatiguée. Ma famille néo-zélandaise habite dans une ville mais ce n est pas comme une ville en France. La maison est en bois, a un étage seulement et il n y a pas de cave. Chaque jour cette semaine nous avons pris le dîner dehors parce qu il fait chaud le soir et il y a du soleil jusqu à environ neuf heures. Lundi prochain c est la rentrée et hier j ai rencontré le directeur du collège. Il est agréable mais il ne parle pas français. Au collège il faut porter un uniforme une jupe noire ou un pantalon noir, un chemisier blanc, un pull-over bleu. Les cours commencent à huit heures quarante-cinq et finissent à trois heures vingt.
