2 PhD Student Position in Medical Image Analysis, University of Basel, Suisse De : "Philippe C. Cattin" <philippe.cattin@unibas.ch> "Motion Compensation in MRgHIFU" Within the scope of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) the Medical Image Analysis Center (MIAC) at the University of Basel is developing novel methods for treating tumours with high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). The available challenging PhD position is part of a multidisciplinary project in the field of liver ablation using HIFU. The project involves both theoretical and applied reserch aspects, and will be performed in close collaboration with researchers of the University Hospital in Basel (UHBS) and University Hospital in Geneva (HUGE). Focused ultrasound is a tumour treatment method of the future, and has the unique capability to deposit sharply localised energy deep into the tissues producing thermal tumour ablation. Todays phased array transducers not only achieve a targeting accuracy in the range of millimetres but also allow electronic control over the ultrasound field that can not be achieved by any other means for tumour treatment. Magnetic resonance imaging, on the other hand, offers excellent anatomic delineation of the tumours and measures functional changes such as blood flow alteration. In addition, MRI provides excellent capabilities for spatial guidance and on line control of the therapy in particular the ablation temperature with MR thermometry. The focus of this work will be on developing methods for optimised tumour ablation talking into account its breathing motion. For this, the 4-dimensional (3D+time) motion of the liver will be determined using a modification of our unique 4DMRI approach. The main challange of this project is solve the inverse optimisation problem. The candidate must have a strong background in mathematics, good communication skills, the ability to combine basic research activities with the needs of clinicians and be willing to work in a clinical environment. We are looking for a motivated, proactive person with a background in mathematics, physics, computer science or other related field. The candidate will have solid programming skills, as well as a good background in general engineering mathematics. A MSc degree or comparable previous experience is required to join the PhD program at our University. email: philippe.cattin@unibas.ch http://miac.unibas.ch "2D/3D Elastic Image Registration" Within the scope of this project at the Medical Image Analysis Center (MIAC), University of Basel, we are developing novel image registration methods allowing to spatially align two-dimensional (2D) histology and three-dimensional (3D) microct data. Significant progress in medical image registration has been made in recent years. Many approaches have been proposed registering 2D-to-2D or 3D-to-3D images even when the two images are from different imaging modalities. Much of this progress is thanks to improved interpolation schemes and similarity measures such as mutual information. Only little research has though been invested into developing registration approaches for 2D-to-3D images of the same modality and virtually no research effort has put into solving the problem of elastically registering 2D-to-3D images of different modalities. This despite the clinical need when for example comparing a microct volumetric image with several slices of histological data of the same sample. As of today, the corresponing location in the microct data set has to be tediously found manually for each histological image. The focus of this Ph.D. thesis will be on developing novel techniques to automatically find the most suitable location in the three-dimensional microct data set for each histological image. The main challange of this project will be to develop multi-modal local region descriptors allowing to match the images. PhD position, The Center for Brain and Cognition at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, ES De : "TORO SOTO, JUAN MANUEL" <juanmanuel.toro@upf.edu> The Center for Brain and Cognition at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona) is offering one PhD position to work on a project financed by a Starting Grant from the European Research Council (PI: Juan M. Toro; http://www.dtic.upf.edu/~jtoro/). The project studies the operation of rule learning mechanisms over linguistic stimuli. It involves several lines of research including speech perception studies with adult participants, developmental studies with young infants and experiments from a comparative cognition perspective. The PhD student will work on the part of the project aimed at characterizing linguistic constraints on adult speech processing. The PhD student will be trained to design, run and analyze speech perception experiments using both behavioral and electrophysiological (ERPs) measures. Expertise on basic programming and EEG procedures will be appreciated. The position is for four years. La chirurgie, qui consiste à retirer la région responsable des crises, est alors l unique possibilité de guérir ces patients. Définir cette région nécessite l exploitation de nombreuses données cliniques et passe le plus souvent par une phase d exploration par des électrodes implantées dans le cerveau des patients pour plusieurs jours (SEEG). En contraste, la magnétoencéphalographie (enregistrement de l activité magnétique cérébrale. MEG) est une technique de pointe, qui enregistre les champs magnétiques des neurones de manière totalement non-invasive. Elle est plus performante que l électroencéphalogramme (enregistrement de l activité électrique à l aide d électrodes placées sur la surface du scalp, EEG) et devrait permettre une réduction des interventions invasives chez les patients épileptiques. Dans ce cadre, l équipe Dynamap est en train de mettre en place des enregistrements MEG, EEG et SEEG simultanés. Ces enregistrements vont permettre de manière unique de déterminer les liens entre les données de surface (EEG et MEG) et profondeur (SEEG) 11

et donc d optimiser l utilisation des données non-invasives. Très peu de centres ont cette possibilité ; à notre connaissance aucun enregistrement des trois modalités en même temps n a été effectué au niveau mondial. Poste : Le candidat intégrera l équipe Dynamap afin d y développer les méthodes nécessaires à l acquisition et au traitement des données simultanées EEG, MEG, SEEG. Ces enregistrements génèrent de grandes quantités d information (+300 capteurs à des fréquences d échantillonnage de plusieurs khz) L'objectif de ce contrat sera d améliorer la qualité des enregistrements (réduction des artefacts à la source) et d'implémenter et de développer des méthodes de traitement du signal/fouille de données (data mining) : débruitage, analyse en composante indépendantes, transformée en ondelettes et de clustering, calcul parallèle.
