Toronto Dance Theatre, founded in 1968 is by no means feeling its age. Under the artistic direction of Christopher House, TDT is a company invested in a contemporary expression that harkens back to its legacy at the very foundations of Canadian modern dance while continuing to push boundaries. With his latest work Rivers, House brings to life the music of revered Canadian composer Ann Southam no slouch herself when it came to breaking new ground in the world of contemporary art. Played live by virtuoso pianist Christina Petrowska Quilico the complex score resonates with the fluid imagery of fast moving water contrasted with delicate moments of stillness. The dancers bring us right inside the music creating intricate patterns of movement that eddy and flow, sweeping us along on a delightful, almost nostalgic journey. Rivers is vintage TDT. Tout en prêtant l oreille à son héritage du passé, fondements de la danse moderne canadienne, elle continue de repousser sans cesse les frontières. Avec sa dernière œuvre, Rivers, House donne un souffle nouveau à la musique de la bien-aimée compositrice canadienne Ann Southam, qui elle-même n hésitait pas à s aventurer en terrain inconnu sur les chemins de la création. Les danseurs nous amènent à l intérieur même de la musique, créant des motifs complexes de mouvements qui coulent et tournoient, nous faisant glisser le long d un délicieux parcours quasi nostalgique. This new work Rivers, set to (and named after) the beloved masterpiece of Canadian composer Ann Southam, played live by virtuosa pianist Christina Petrowska Quilico, is a collaboration between Christopher House and TDT s ten dancers. The choreography is a fluid and unpredictable counterpoint to the music, reflecting the rushing cascades, luxuriant eddies and attentive points of stillness in the score. The dance celebrates the sweep of the music, alternating between large scale kinetic strokes and intricately crafted movement conversations. Rivers premiered in April 2012 at the Fleck Dance Theatre, Harbourfront Centre, in Toronto. Une nouvelle pièce inspirée du chef-d œuvre musical très apprécié du même nom, conçu par la compositrice canadienne Ann Southam et interprété ici par la pianiste virtuose Christina Petrowska Quilico, Rivers est le fruit d une collaboration entre Christopher House et dix danseurs du Toronto Dance Theatre. Choreographer's Note Message du chorégraphe Ann Southam and I began our creative collaboration in the early eighties. In 1982, she gave me a recording of two of her new works for piano, Glass Houses #5 and Fast Rivers #8. My choreography to Glass Houses created in 1983 with dancers Merle Holloman, Helen Jones, Benoît Lachambre, Grace Miyagawa and Luc Tremblay became a signature work for TDT and received more than 100 performances around the world, danced to a brilliant recording by Christina Petrowska Quilico. Almost thirty years later, it has been a privilege and a great pleasure to re-connect with Rivers, and Ann Southam's music, in a live collaboration with Christina. Considered by many to be Ann's masterpiece, Rivers is a cycle of minimalist piano works that range from boisterous to serene to triumphantly ecstatic. Making a dance to this music has been an exhilarating experience. Christopher House Artistic Director Directeur artistique Christopher House was born and raised in St. John s, Newfoundland. Resident Choreographer since 1981 and Artistic Director since 1994, he has contributed over 60 works to the TDT repertoire in addition to creating choreographies for Lisbon s Ballet Gulbenkian, the National Ballet of Canada, and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, among others. He has received many awards for his work, including three Dora Mavor Moore Awards and the Muriel Sherrin Award for International Achievement in Dance (2009). He was made an honorary doctor of letters by Memorial University in 2010. House is the Artistic Advisor of the Professional Training Program of The School of Toronto Dance Theatre and has taught technique and creative process across Canada and at such international institutions as the Juilliard School and the dance department at Codarts (formerly Rotterdam Dance Academy). Christina Petrowska Quilico Pianist Pianiste Hailed by the New York Times at 14 for her promethean talent, Christina Petrowska Quilico has appeared at Carnegie, Alice Tully and Merkin Halls; as a soloist, and with baritone Louis Quilico throughout the US and Canada, in Taiwan, the Middle East, France, Germany, Greece and the Ukraine. She has also appeared as a soloist with leading Canadian ensembles, and the symphony orchestras of Greek Radio and Taipei. Juilliard-trained, she studied in Europe with famed composers and has long been one of Canada s leading interpreters of new music premiering 16 piano concerti and recording numerous contemporary works four earning JUNO Awards nominations as well as standard repertoire.
