Grammaire-ama! 3 OBJECT PRONOUNS: ME, TE, NOUS, VOUS (les pronoms compléments d objet) In French, the object pronouns me, te, nous, vous, can be used as: direct objects or indirect objects me / m (me) me / m (to me) te / t (you) te / t (to you) nous (us) nous (to us) vous (you) vous (to you) e.g. ils me voient (they see me) ils me parlent (they speak to me) ils te voient (they see you) ils te parlent (they speak to you) ils nous voient (they see us) ils vous voient (they see you) NOTE: ils nous parlent (they speak to us) ils vous parlent (they speak to you) a) When the above are used as direct objects, they answer the question whom? ( whom do they see? ). When used as indirect objects, they answer the question to whom? ( to whom do they speak? ). Therefore, the verb determines whether they are direct or indirect objects. b) In French, verbs that take an indirect object are always followed by the preposition à (parler à, téléphoner à, donner à); those taking a direct object are not followed by à (voir, aimer, aider). In English, we often omit the preposition to before the indirect object: He gives me a gift = He gives a gift to me. c) The word order is the same as for the objects le, la, l, les, lui, leur as learned earlier. 3, ISBN: 9781554098071 www.tralco.com www.lingofun.com 5
