3 SUJET ETUDE DEA Phase equilibria for the system «Carbon dioxide - Water» in a large range of temperature (20 to 270 C) in presence of dissolved salts. by François-Xavier CAMMAS STATMENT OF THE PROBLEM The WAO process (Wet Air Oxidation) consist in making easier the contact between the molecular oxygen and the organic pollution. In order to have a rapid reaction, the temperature must be high (250 to 325 C). It allow to accelerate the oxidation, and to oxide the organic charge in water and. carbon dioxide who can stay in aqueous phase or can pass in gaseous phase with the conditions of temperature and pressure. If we want to maintain the liquid state, we have to work under high pressure (50 to 200 bar).during the oxidation reaction, a lot of water and carbon dioxide are produce, water and carbon dioxide are the ultimates compounds of the degradation. Then it s very important for fixing the dimensions of oxidation reactors to know the solubility of the carbon dioxide in the aqueous phase, but also to show the influance of the temperature and the composing of the aqueous phase (addition of dissolved salts). The solutions we have to treat contains very often dissolved salts, we must then study the influence of this dissolved salts. SIGNIFICANCE The solubility of gas in liquids is in first approximation directly proportional to the partial pressure of the solute, moreover, the variation of total pressure also modify the chemical potential of the solute (in consequence his solubility) by the intermediate of the partial molar volume of the gas in the solution. On the other hand, the importance of the temperature upon the solubility of gas is very important. It s then necessary to define a system able to deal with the influence in the same time of the pressure and the tempreature, in order to cover the conditions where we have to know the solubility of gas. The liquid and gas phases equilibria is the thermodinamic start point for the system description. In order to describe the phases equilibria, the equality of fugacities is used : Solvant : Solute :

4 Where : We used the Peng-Robinson equation of state to describe the behaviour of the vapor phase and then to determine the fugacity coefficients and the compressibility factors. Finaly, we have a system with twelve equations with twelve unknows, which can be easyly resolved. The presence of dissolved salts is included in the expressions of the molar fractions in liquid phase. If in water the activity coefficient of the carbon dioxide is equal to one, it become upper to one with solutions of dissolved salts. With the experimental resolve of the variation of this coefficient g2 we have represented the evolution with both temperature and the nature of the liquid phase of a apparent Henry s constant which is define by : H 21 = g2 H21. This apparent constant allow to obtain the solubility of the carbon dioxide in brine. 5 ACHIVED RESULTS First, we have studied the system H2O-CO2 in a large range of temperature (20 to 270 C). We have obtained a maximum of the Henry s constant near 150 C, then a minimum of solubility. It s also important to notice that the value of the constant for temperatures upper 250 C is lower than the constant at temperature near 20 C. The influence of temperature is very important for exemple, the constant at 100 C is three times more important than the constant at 20 C. The error due to the system of treatment used uppon the Henry s constant is near 2-3% with the temperature of study. We have modeled the evolution of the constant with the temperature, we have used a polynomial regression (degree 5). After the study of the system carbon dioxide - pure water and the obtaining of the model, we have studied some solutions of dissolved salts (Na2SO4, K2SO4, NaHCO3 for this work). All this solutions give an increase of the apparent Henry s constant. Moreover, we have noticied that when the concentration of the solution increase, the apparent Henry s constant increase to. We have shown that we could make the following classification with the effect of the salt uppon the solubility of the CO2. The salt who have less effect for a fixed concentration is K2SO4 then Na2SO4 who have a similar effect with NaHCO3. We can in consequence say that the effect of Na+ uppon the solubility of CO2 (decrease of solubility) is more important than the effect of K+. The following graphic gives the summary of this study. Variation with temperature of the apparent Henry s constant in presence of dissolved salts Finaly, this study has shown that on the one hand, the effect of the temperature is very important uppon the solubility of the carbon dioxide, we have a small error with our system of treatment (2-3%). On the other hand, we have sudied solutions of brine who decrease the solubility, this effect increase when the concentration of the solution increase and depends on the nature of the salt.
