5 INTRODUCTION FLASH SUR LES PODIUMS A l arrivée du mois d août, une pensée effleure forcément l esprit de chacun: «La fin de l été approche, il me faut profiter au mieux des derniers rayons de soleil.» Ne serait-ce pas le moment de s offrir un séjour à Ibiza, Saint-Tropez, Figari ou Larnaca? Adrien Besson et Daniel Zamarbide, deux des associés, s expriment sur les projets expérimentaux du collectif. On y trouve notamment la collection «Lotus», dont les pièces se composent d une pierre brillante, embrassée par des branches de tsavorites, de saphirs roses et de diamants. La créatrice allemande dévoile également son amour pour le turquoise, la couleur de la pierre «paraiba», qu elle habille subtilement d autres pierres précieuses. Paraiyba is a recent arrival to Geneva s luxury market and this jewellery store mostly stocks pieces by designer Elke Berr. The Lotus collection features jewellery with a single, sparkling gem surrounded by tendrils of tsavorites, pink sapphires and diamonds. 12 RADAR RESTAURANT BASQUE! Il y a un peu de Biarritz au cœur du village de Veyrier. Issu d une famille de restaurateurs basques, Patrick Laporte est parti à la découverte, a fréquenté l Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne, s est formé lors d un tour de France (Alain Chapel notamment), a secondé Jean Oberson au Café de la Place (Plan-les-Ouates), avant de reprendre celui de la Réunion à Veyrier. La carte change toutes les cinq semaines. On admire la langoustine rôtie en kadaïff, accompagnée de gaspacho à la fraise, version carbonique, ou le Saint-Pierre saisi à la plancha, petits violets et févettes parfumées à la marjolaine. Vous avez remarqué? Le Pays basque oui, mais par touches, discrètes. Car le chef, tout en évoquant le pays, concentre sa cuisine principalement sur le produit, qu il cherche à bonifier, exhausser, valoriser. Au point de proposer, plusieurs fois par an, des menus thématiques. Qu il s agisse du poivre, des fleurs, d un vigneron, d une vallée, de la tomate, du miel ou des produits non traités, l approche du chef est d abord curieuse et inventive. Au final, un très grand plaisir, fait de découvertes, de surprises, qui se déguste soit en salle, soit sur la belle terrasse calme et ombragée. LA RÉUNION Chemin Sous-Balme Veyrier T Fermé samedi et dimanche The village of Vernier is the place to go for a taste of Biarritz. Patrick Laporte comes from a family of Basque restaurateurs and travelled to develop his craft. He went to the Lausanne Hotel School, trained with various chefs around France and seconded Jean Oberson at Café de la Place (Plan-les-Ouates) before taking over La Réunion at Veyrier. The menu changes every five weeks. Outstanding dishes include kadaïff-roasted langoustine served with fizzy strawberry gazpacho as well as John Dory a la plancha with marjoram-scented violets and miniature beans. Noticed the discreet dashes of Basque flavours yet? That s because the chef concentrates on bringing out the best in the fine produce he uses to create dishes which reflect touches of his Basque origins as well. Laporte goes so far as to feature themed menus several times a year. The chef s approach is both curious and inventive. He offers surprising taste sensations and new flavours to tickle every palate, served in the dining room or on the restaurant s quiet and shady terrace. 10

16 RADAR MUSIQUE UNE ROUSSE AU VERT On ne pouvait faire l impasse sur la lumineuse incursion en musique du mannequin anglais Karen Elson dans ce numéro spécial mode. La belle rousse, au visage aristocratiquement pâle et aux pommettes hautes, partage la vie de Jack White, le leader des White Stripes et de The Dead Weather. Mais elle ne l a pas attendu pour s intéresser au rock. La passion habite la Mancunienne établie à Nashville depuis ses débuts de mannequin à Paris où elle assistait religieusement aux concerts des corbeaux Nick Cave et PJ Harvey. Elle a également chanté par le passé avec des artistes comme Robert Plant ou Cat Power. Son premier album solo, produit par son mari également à la batterie, sent néanmoins moins la cave que la campagne, celle brumeuse de son Angleterre natale et celle ensoleillée du sud des Etats-Unis. Les guitares slide et l orgue apportent une touche défraîchie originale à cet album qui oscille entre ballades folk, ambiance de saloon et pointes électriques tandis que la voix touchante de Karen Elson fait chavirer les cœurs. Pas de révolution du rock en vue, mais un album savoureux et sincère. KAREN ELSON, «THE GHOST WHO WALKS» XL Recordings BabooTime s fashion issue wouldn t be complete without mentioning British fashion model Karen Elson s promising new musical career. The ginger-haired beauty, known in the fashion buiness for her aristocratic pallor and high cheekbones, is married to White Stripes and The Dead Weather leader, Jack White. But Elson s interest in rock music started long before her relationship with White began. Elson is from Manchester, but as soon as she began modelling in Paris she moved to Nashville so that she could faithfully attend concerts by moody rockers Nick Cave and PJ Harvey. She also gained experience singing with musical legends like Robert Plant and Cat Power. Elson s first solo album was produced by her husband, who plays drums on it as well. Despite her taste for rock s dark side, the album has more of a country feel a mixture of her native England s misty countryside and America s sun-drenched Southern states. Slide guitars and organs bring a unique retro sound to the album which features a combination of ballads and Southern honky-tonk accented by electrical elements and Elson s heartfelt vocals. Although it can t be classified as a revolutionary rock album, Elson s music is genuinely delightful. 14

18 RADAR UGC Production CINÉMA NOTRE JOUR VIENDRA En deux clips vidéo, Romain Gavras, fils de Costa, a campé un univers extrêmement dérangeant, où règne violence gratuite ou totalitaire. Ces deux formats courts pour Justice il y a deux ans, et pour M.I.A. cette année, ont créé d interminables polémiques en raison de leur absence de point de vue moral et d empathie pour les victimes. Bruts, mais léchés, les clips ressemblaient à de petits films, où la musique faisait davantage office de BO que d élément central. On s attendait donc à un passage au cinéma. C est chose faite avec «Notre Jour viendra». L immanquable Vincent Cassel, toujours présent dans les productions françaises glauques et ultra-violentes, et Olivier Barthélémy interprètent dans ce road-movie en Angleterre deux roux sans dieux ni maîtres en quête hallucinée de l Irlande. «NOTRE JOUR VIENDRA» De Romain Gavras, avec Vincent Cassel Sortie le 15 septembre 2010 With just two music videos, Romain Gavras, son of the renowned Costa, managed to create an extremely disturbing world where random violence and totalitarianism prevail. The two short videos the first for Justice two years ago and the second for M.I.A. this year have led to endless discussion due to their absence of both moral standards and sympathy for the victims. The brutal yet slick videos are more like mini-films, where the music is more characteristic of an original soundtrack than a central element. All this led to expectations of a move into filmmaking, and the prophecy has been fulfilled with the upcoming release of Our Day Will Come. Actors Vincent Cassel and Olivier Barthélémy regulars in almost every grungy, ultra-violent French film play the main characters in this road movie set in England. They portray two ginger-haired rebels who answer to neither gods nor masters as they pursue their mad quest to reach Ireland. 16

20 RENCONTRE ARCHITECTES DU RÉEL ARCHITECTS ANCHORED IN REALITY Propos recueillis par Sylvain Menétrey Le bureau d'architectes Group8 est installé à Genève dans des bureaux composés de containers. D une volière camouflée dans le paysage à des locaux de grandes institutions, ses projets parlent de ce qui les entoure. Un morceau de parquet qui donne son thème entièrement boisé au nouvel habillage du hall de Palexpo. Un éboulement de roche à Andermatt qui se prolonge en une maison de pierre. Le bureau d architectes genevois Group8 construit en réfléchissant aux conditions locales. Large structure qui compte neuf associés et une soixantaine d employés, l entreprise vient de fêter ses 10 ans en dévoilant son dernier projet. Une réalisation très personnelle puisqu il s agit de ses propres locaux. Cette impressionnante halle non loin de l aéroport se divise en un open space d une blancheur aussi nacrée que les écrans des Mac flambant neufs qui la peuplent et des salles de réunions surprenantes, installées dans des vieux containers rouillés. Rencontre avec Adrien Besson et Daniel Zamarbide, deux des associés de ce bureau au nom neutre, mais au style pop et affirmé. BabooTime: Vous venez d inaugurer vos nouveaux locaux en containers, d où vient cette idée? Adrien Besson: L idée des containers est un vieux fantasme d architecte qui est de construire quelque chose à partir d objets existants et de l élever au statut d architecture, comme Marcel Duchamp et ses ready-made. Daniel Zamarbide: Ces dernières années, notre studio d architecture s est transformé en une véritable entreprise. Nous manquions cruellement de place dans nos anciens locaux. Le bureau était scindé en deux. Il fallait donc prendre un espace plus grand pour nous regrouper. La question de base était quel type d image nous voulons donner. A bit of parquet flooring was the catalyst for a completely wood theme used to transform the hall at Palexpo. A rockslide at Andermatt served as inspiration for creating a stone house. Geneva s Group8 architecture firm takes local conditions into account when it creates new spaces. It s a substantial company that includes nine associates and some 60 employees. Its latest project was unveiled to celebrate the firm s 10 th anniversary, a project that was particularly dear to the group as it was the inauguration of Group8 s new offices. The impressive structure is located near the airport, with a splendid hall which is just as pearly white as the rows of brand new Macs it houses. Rusty freight containers were transformed to become the firm s conference rooms. In an interview, two of the company s associates, Adrien Besson and Daniel Zamarbide, reveal how Group8 s ambiguous name belies itsdecidedly pop style. BabooTime: You just opened your new offices in freight containers. Why? Adrien Besson: Because we like freight containers! Daniel Zamarbide: Our architecture studio has become a real company over the past few years and we didn t have enough room in our previous location. The offices were scattered all over the place and we wanted to find a space that could accommodate the entire staff. The essential issue centred on the type of image we wanted to project. We wanted to contrast two concepts within the space; a big open area a factory of sorts acting as a link to the freight containers, which evoke travelling and industrial activities from a bygone era. The concept of using freight containers is the perfect example of an 18

Vous réalisez régulièrement des espaces de bureaux et d administration, vos locaux vont-ils servir de tests? DZ: Oui, c est une boîte à idées. L espace est évolutif. Nous avons par exemple défini un container comme une cellule de concours, mais il pourrait devenir autre chose. Nous travaillons avec une société d ameublement avec laquelle nous allons faire des expériences. L important est qu il se crée des espaces de mise en réseaux informels entre les collaborateurs. Nous aimons quand l architecture suggère des comportements comme à Palexpo, où le fait de recouvrir de bois une rampe et des escaliers où personne ne s arrêtait auparavant a donné envie aux visiteurs de se l approprier. C est l un de vos grands projets du moment où vous avez témoigné de votre goût pour l ornement, notamment à travers de très beaux plafonds. AB: Palexpo souffrait d un manque de qualification de l espace. On pouvait passer d une halle à l autre et avoir l impression de ne pas avancer. Pour les rénovations du hall d entrée et du centre de congrès, nous avons donc joué sur des habillages différents, avec une salle au plafond composé d une résille de néons dont le dessin reprend le motif du mathématicien Voronoï. Le restaurant est illuminé de longs tubes ondulants. L idée n est pas de faire de la pure décoration, mais d utiliser une forme d ornementation figurative pour qualifier les espaces. DZ: Au sortir de nos études, nous avions en commun chez Group8 un rejet de la culture minimaliste dominante en architecture. Nous aimons la culture pop et le fait que l architecture soit compréhensible par le plus grand nombre. Nous disons oui à Madonna et non à Boulez! Mais attention, la Madonna de l époque «Music» quand la pop montrait qu elle pouvait aussi toucher un certain degré d intelligence. N est-ce qu un parallèle méthodologique ou est-ce qu il vous arrive de faire des citations pop dans votre travail? AB: Les deux. Nous avons par exemple été nominés aux bourses fédérales d architecture en Nous avons produit pour l occasion un projet qui s inspirait de la typographie de l enseigne d Hollywood. C était une façon de rendre hommage à ce marqueur urbanistique qui est plus qu une enseigne dans une ville sans signe. architect s recurrent fantasy that of taking existing objects and transforming them into bona fide architecture, just as Marcel Duchamp did with his ready-mades. You regularly design offices and administrative spaces. Are your new offices some kind of testing ground? DZ: Yes, it s a think tank. The space can evolve with the company. For example, we used a freight container as the defining parameter for a competition space, but the units can also be used for other purposes. We work with a furniture company that we re going to try some new things with as well. What s important to us is creating spaces for our staff to network freely. We like it when architecture encourages different types of behaviour, like at Palexpo. For example, by simply installing a wooden ramp and stairs in an area the public used to just walk straight through, we created an inviting space that now incites people to stop and sit down. Palexpo is one of your largest current projects and underscores your taste for decoration mainly in the facility s ornamental ceilings and spaghetti neon lighting. AB: Palexpo s problem was that the spaces weren t clearly defined. Going from one hall to the next didn t give people a sense of moving forward. That s why we played with various styles of dressing the spaces when we renovated the entrance area and convention hall, like using a neon grid designed to echo the motif applied by the mathematician Voronoï on part of the ceiling. The restaurant is lit by long tubes that we too refer to as spaghetti. The concept isn t based on simply decorating a space, but more about using figurative styles of furnishing to define various spaces. DZ: When we finished our studies, what we had in common was the impulse to reject the minimalist trend in architecture which was prevalent at that time. We like pop culture and making architecture something everyone can understand. We re more into Madonna than Boulez! But let s make it clear that we re talking about Madonna s Music period, when pop implied a certain level of intelligence. Is that simply a methodological parallel or do you sometimes make references to pop culture in your work? AB: Both. We were nominated for the Bourses fédérales d architecture in That project was based on the typeface used for the Hollywood sign. It was a way of paying tribute to that iconic urban symbol which is more than simply a sign in a city with no real sense of identity. 20
