INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Spa Location: Improper installation may result in equipment damage and will void the warranty. Your spa must be placed on a solid, flat, level surface. The space you choose to install your spa is a very important decision, you should consider all of the listed suggestions. Check your local code office for understanding of building, fencing, gates, electrical, plumbing and enclosure required codes. A location should be selected to compliment your lifestyle, the view from your house and the ability to supervise the spa. Position the spa in relation to the surroundings of trees, sunlight exposure, wind, bathroom location, landscaping and evening lighting. A spa filled with water is very heavy, if the spa is placed on flooring or decking, be sure the structure is strong enough to support the weight. The necessary support should be at least 75 pounds per square foot. Install your spa, in a way that will allow easy access to the equipment door. Storage area for maintenance equipment and chemicals (storing chemicals inside your spa cabinet will void the warranty). Indoor Considerations: The interior of your home where the spa is located must be able to withstand high humidity. The spa chemicals may have some corrosive effect. Floor drain is needed to carry off splashed water from the spa. It is strongly advised NOT to locate a spa on second story location that may be above finished living space. 5

FILLING YOUR SPA WITH WATER THROUGH THE FILTER CHAMBER Spa unions may loosen during shipping. Prior to spa operation, make sure plumbing fittings on pump & control pack are tight. There are FOUR unions that may require hand tightening prior to operation of your spa; SIX unions if your spa has 2 pumps. When filling the spa with water, keep observing these fittings for any slight water drips. If a drip is observed, just hand tighten until dripping ceases. Make sure all gate valves are in the UP position (and white plastic clips are inserted), also make sure all pump & heater unions and black drain cap are tight. Be sure to check that blue ball valve on drain is turned to the off position (counter-clockwise) with cap installed. 6

FILLING YOUR SPA THROUGH THE FILTER CHAMBER (cont.) Remove filter as shown below. Then place the hose into the filter hole as shown. This will ensure that air bubbles are removed from the lines while you fill the system. It is important that you fill your spa with water to the proper level. The water level must be between 1-2 above the highest jet, not counting rollover neck/shoulder jets. REMOVING AND/OR REPLACING THE FILTER FIGURE 1 FIGURE 2 FIGURE 3 FIGURE 4 To remove the filter in your spa you must first reach into the filter chamber, then turn the weir counterclockwise until you hear the cover unlock (FIGURE 1). Lift out the weir (FIGURE 2) and remove the filter basket (FIGURE 3). Then lift out the filter (FIGURE 4). Reverse the order to replace with a new filter. 7

ELECTRICAL - WIRING DIAGRAM It is recommended that a licensed electrician install the power to your spa, in accordance with the National Electric Code and/or any local electrical codes in effect at the time of installation. Power supply installation must include a properly rated GFCI circuit breaker. The circuit must be dedicated and should not be shared with any other appliances. It should be labeled and easily accessible to users. The power supply must be hard wired into the power pack. A hole may be drilled through the resin cabinet near the electrical pack to accommodate wiring. Foam insulation may be sprayed around the hole to fill any gaps between the cabinet and the wiring. 220V THREE WIRE & GROUND N L1 L2 GRND THESE WIRES GO TO THE PC BOARD CONTROL CIRCUIT Your wiring should look like this. 13 REMOVING AN AIR LOCK NOTE: See Union Adjustment Information before operating spa. Before starting up your spa, make sure you have read and understand all of the previous instructions. Make sure the spa has been installed correctly, including the electrical wiring connections as specified. Spa s water is at the correct level Ensure all gate valves are opened with clip installed. See page 6. The circuit breaker on the control panel has automatic functions that operate upon start up and normal operation to protect the system. Upon power up, PR will appear for 2 minutes while system is in purge mode and then normal operation will resume. Approximately six minutes after the system has been powered up the first filtration cycle will begin to operate. Any time after the start up, you will be able to change the filter cycle and reset your temperature set point. Upon startup, the pump may sound sluggish and the flow from the jets will be minimal, this indicates you have an air lock in the pump. To release the air from the pump, simply open the highest union (or upper union) to release the air trapped in the water lines, or gently, using a 17mm or 18mm wrench (varies on pump size) slowly loosen the black plastic hex head bolt in front of pump. You will hear air being pushed out the union or bolt, once the air stops and water starts to come out, the pump will pick up speed and the jets flow will increase. Carefully tighten the union or bolt until the water does not leak from the union or bolt. Be careful not to overtighten the black hex head bolt this may cause the bolt to strip or you may pinch the gasket. Strong recommends that you loosen the upper union to relieve the air from the lines since this method lessens the chance of stripping the hex bolts. 13

Spa Water Quality Maintenance As the owner of a Strong Spa, it is important that you maintain your spa water and keep your spa equipment in excellent condition. To do so, you must first balance your spa water. If your spa is equipped with an ozone generator it will automatically produce ozone, but it cannot be used as the sole means of maintaining safe spa water. You must select and use a spa chemical system in addition to your ozone generator. The ozone generator is a wearable, non-warranty item and it needs to be replaced approximately every two years. Ozone Ozone is a natural purifier. Chemically known as O3, it is produced from simple oxygen molecules in our atmosphere. Ozone is produced in nature from lightning during electrical storms and from ultraviolet rays from the sun. It forms our protective ozone layer. Your spa s ozone generator is designed to duplicate this natural sanitizer. Ozone breaks down and oxidizes oils, suntan lotions, sweat, urea, etc. from spa water more effectively than commercial oxidizers. Ozone works with chlorine or bromine systems in your spa to destroy bacteria and viruses and will do so more effectively. Ozone only leaves simple oxygen in the water as a by-product. Filtering Cycle The filtering cycle of your spa should be operated at least two hours or more a day (whether or not the heater is heating) to remove impurities and to prevent disposition of contaminants in your spa. The filtering system works automatically. Keep the spa covered when not in use to reduce the loss of heat and to keep debris from settling in the water. Important: STRONG POOLS & SPAS does hereby claim no responsibility or liability for use of and quantities of the chemicals used. Follow instructions and dosages recommended by chemical manufacturers and use only spa chemicals in your spa. Do not mix chemicals or add chemicals while bathers are using your spa! Do not use salt-based systems in your spa! Damage caused by salt-based systems will not be covered under your warranty. Do not use soaps or detergents of any kind in your spa! Damage caused by soaps and detergents will not be covered under your warranty. Changing Spa Water Spa water should be changed periodically, depending upon frequency of use and other conditions that may affect water suitability. Typically 60 to 90 days is a satisfactory interval under normal conditions. With heavy usage, the interval between water changing should be less. Spa Filter Cartridge Clean filter cartridge every 2 to 4 weeks depending on the frequency of use. Rinse the filter cartridge with a pressure hose and reinstall. When changing spa water it is good practice to soak the filter cartridge in filter cleaner. The filter cleaner is specially made to remove accumulation of oils and other contaminates, ensuring sanitary water and extending filter cartridge life. Adding Chemicals Add to the center of the spa with the pump running. Make sure the water is heated. Never add chemicals to cold water, as this will effect chemical action. Also, never add chemicals directly into the skimmer. Store all chemicals in a cool, dry place and in such a way as to prevent children and pets from contacting. Balanced Water Balanced water is important for the safety of bathers. It also protects your spa components from corrosion and your spa surfaces from scale deposits that will reduce the efficiency of your spa equipment. Important: Poor water chemistry can result in premature failure of parts and components and may void your warranty. Balanced water is achieved by correctly adjusting chemical components in the water... ph, total alkalinity and calcium hardness. ph ph is measured on a scale that runs from ph indicates whether water is neutral, acidic, or basic. A ph equal to 7.0 is neutral. A ph below this point is acidic and a ph above this point is basic. Since the water capacity of your spa is far less than that of a swimming pool, the chemical reaction caused by the presence of one or more persons in the spa is more rapid and pronounced. In other words, it is much more difficult to maintain the proper ph balance in a spa than in a swimming pool. For these reasons, it is important to check frequently, the total alkalinity of the water, the ph level, and the sanitize level, then add prescribed chemicals as necessary to maintain the proper chemical balance. 16

Spa Water Quality Maintenance cont. Test ph weekly IDEAL ph RANGE BETWEEN 7.2 and ACIDIC NEUTRAL BASIC Recommended Range to 7.8 If the ph is too low it can If the ph is too high it can 1. Corrode metal surfaces. 1. Deposit scale on surfaces. 2. Cause a need for excessive sanitizer. 2. Contribute to cloudy water. 3. Irritate skin and eyes. 3. Cause eye irritation. 4. Reduce sanitizer efficiency Adjusting ph If you need to raise ph, add a granular ph increaser (sodium carbonate) at the rate recommended on the container. Should you need to lower ph, add a granular ph decreaser (sodium bisulfate) at the rate recommended on the container. After the initial application, allow water to circulate approximately 15 minutes at high speed. Test ph again and reapply, if necessary to adjust your ph to the proper level. Total Alkalinity Minerals in your spa water can act as buffering agents. Total alkalinity is the measurement of these alkaline materials that help prevent corrosion and staining. The correct amount of alkalinity in your spa water will keep the water s ph consistent while allowing for ph adjustment as needed. At low total alkalinity levels, your spa water s ph easily drifts, making frequent, expensive ph adjustments necessary. However, a high total alkalinity level keeps the water s ph rigidly fixed. If ph adjustment is needed, excessively high amounts of chemicals will be required to change the ph. Recommended Range: 80 to 120 Parts Per Million (PPM) Possible Problems: 1. The ph is difficult to maintain. If total alkalinity is too low, ph will drift. 2. Corrosive tendencies. If total alkalinity is too high: ph difficult to adjust (it remains fixed.) Cloudy water. Potential for scaling. High ph and low sanitizer efficiency. Testing Weekly Adjusting Total Alkalinity Total Alkalinity can be raised with alkalinity increaser (sodium bicarbonate) at the manufacturer s recommended dose. Calcium Hardness Calcium hardness is the amount of dissolved calcium in your spa water. Too little calcium in the water will etch plastic surfaces and too much will leave deposits on spa surfaces and equipment. Recommended Range:

Spa Water Quality Maintenance cont. Possible Problems: Calcium Hardness Too High: Scaling of surface, piping and equipment May contribute to cloudy water. Calcium Hardness Too Low: Equipment corrosion. Some surfaces may be etched. Adjusting Calcium Hardness Raise hardness by the addition of calcium chloride. Decrease calcium hardness by draining spa and replacing with water containing lower levels of calcium hardness. Disinfectant Granular chlorine, granular bromine and brominating tablets are popular disinfectants designed to work well with your spa s ozone system, and to function well in water with elevated temperatures. Granular chlorine (dichlor dihydrate, lithium hypochlorite), dissolves quickly, completely and provides a steady source of available chlorine to control the growth of algae, kill bacteria and destroy organic contaminants. Maintain a chlorine residual of between 1.0 and 3.0 ppm. Non-chlorine type shock will oxidize or destroy most of the organic contaminants that result from bathers. It is a fastacting oxidizing shock treatment that works almost immediately to improve water quality and eliminate odors and irritants. However, it is designed to be a shock treatment only, and is not a disinfectant. Brominating tablets and granular bromine are effective as a spa water sanitizer and disinfectant. Follow manufacturer s recommendations for correct amounts and usage. Maintain an active bromine residual of 2.0 to 4.0 ppm. Shock Treatment with Granular Disinfectant Adding granular chlorine or bromine disinfectant to the water in unusually high amounts is called shocking the spa and should not be confused with non-chlorine shock. An occasional shock treatment destroys algae, bacteria, and chloramines. After shocking your spa, do not allow bathers to enter the spa until disinfectant levels drop to normal. Causes of Loss of Disinfectant Algae consumes large amounts of disinfectant. With an algae problem, the use of an algaecide in addition to disinfectant may be required. The amount of disinfectant needed is directly affected by the number of people using your spa. A high ph above 7.8 substantially retards disinfecting. Keep the ph between 7.2 and 7.8. The sun s ultraviolet (UV) rays quickly dissipate disinfectant levels. High water temperature accelerates the loss of disinfectant. Rain and wind can deposit contaminants into your spa. Maintain: ph 7.2 to 7.8 Total alkalinity 80 to 120 ppm If using brominating tablets the proper level in dispenser Maintain granular chlorine residual level at 1.0 to 3.0 ppm Maintain bromine residual level at 2.0 to 4.0 Calcium hardness Non-chlorine shock weekly or as needed based on spa use Test ph, total alkalinity and calcium hardness weekly Test disinfectant daily with a spa test kit, available through your spa dealer. 19 Cleaning and Care Instructions Resin and Acrylic Spa Surfaces For normal care and cleaning, use a soft cloth or sponge with soap and water. Rinse well and dry with a soft, clean cloth. Before using any household cleaner on an acrylic surface, make sure it is recommended for use on acrylic by the manufacturer. Remove dust and dry dirt with a soft, clean, damp cloth. Clean grease, oil, paint and ink stains with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Rinse well and dry with a soft, clean cloth. Never use abrasive cleaners. Do not allow your surface to come into contact with nail polish, nail polish remover, wintergreen oil (methyl salicylate), dry cleaning solution, lacquer thinners, gasoline, pine oil, etc. Avoid placing razorblades or other sharp instruments on this surface as they may scratch it. Small scratches can be removed by buffing lightly with a clean cloth and using either an automotive polishing liquid or a toothpaste containing a fine polishing ingredient. For deeper scratches, sand the surface lightly with 400 grit wet or dry paper and buff with fine-grit buffing compound. Spa Pillow Attachment and Removal To attach Insert ball pin into receptacle in spa wall. To remove Gently pull pillow ball pin out of receptacle (if ball pin is pulled out of receptacle in pillow, it can be reinserted) Cleaning and Care Pillows can be cleaned with soap and water, mild household cleaners. 19

Spa Winterization Procedure Questions? Call Damage caused by improper winterization is not covered under the Strong Spas Warranty. Strong Spas invites you to enjoy your spa year-round, but should you choose to close up your spa for the winter, please follow proper winterization procedures. If you have any questions, please call Strong Spas Technical Support department at You may also wish to contact a professional to perform these services for you. 1. Turn off power at the GFCI circuit breaker before draining or servicing your spa. 2. Open access door, or remove exterior panels by inserting a flathead screwdriver at the bottom edge of the panel and prying out. (Figure 1). 3. Attach a garden hose to the drain and open the blue ball valve (Figure 2). Water will start to drain. You may have some water left in the spa shell that did not drain. Remove it with a wet-vac or by hand with a small cup. 4. Loosen all unions from heater and pump(s) to let excess water drain from the lines (Figure 3). Your spa may have more than one pump. Be sure to follow winterization procedures for each pump and all unions. 5. Remove lowest drain plug on front of each pump (Figure 4). Drain out any water in pump(s). 20

Spa Winterization Procedure (cont.) Questions? Call After the spa has drained, you MUST also use a wet-vac to remove the water from the lines by vacuum/ suction. Water left in the lines and jets will freeze and damage them. To adequately clean out the lines, place the wet-vac for seconds over: each drain (Figure 5); each union (Figures 6 and 7); each jet face (Figure 8); each suction (Figure 9); and the filter cavity (Figure 10). See your manual for filter removal procedure. 7. After all the water is removed from the spa, jets, and plumbing, re-insert drain plug into each pump (Figure 4). Tighten all unions and make sure all gate valves are open with clips installed (Figure 3). 8. Pour a gallon of spa antifreeze into the top of each pump (Figure 11) and a gallon into the filter cavity (Figure 12). 9. Replace all exterior panels. 10. Close your spa cover. To reverse the winterization procedure, fill the spa s footwell with water, then drain the spa to clear the antifreeze out of the spa. Important: Damage caused by improper winterization is not covered under the Strong Spas Warranty. If you have any questions, please call Strong Spas Technical Support department at You may also wish to contact a professional to perform these services for you. 21

Spa Controls AIR CONTROLS & WATERFALL Turning the air control knobs will adjust the amount of air flow coming out of the jets. You can adjust them from MINIMAL to FULL power. Turn off air when not in use to prevent evaporation and heat loss. WATERFALL FLOW ADJUSTMENT JET TYPES 2 STAINLESS FIXED 2 STAINLESS ADJUSTABLE DIRECTIONAL 3 STAINLESS ADJUSTABLE DIRECTIONAL SUCTION 22

TROUBLESHOOTING No power to spa: 1. Check proper connection to the pack 2. Check fuse in pack. (30 AMP Slow Blow) 3. Must have very good ground connection. If none, call tech support. 4. Check that light on cord is on. Trips Breaker: 1. Make sure your spa is on a dedicated line. 2. Check breaker to make sure it is wired properly. See pages First, take note as to how the pump runs before it trips. Trips instantly: 1. Mis-wired. Check electrical wiring. See pages Breaker replacement. 3. Short in ozone. Unhook to check. Call tech support. 4. Short in pumps. Unhook to check. Call tech support. Poor Water Flow: 1. Clean filter. 2. Check to see if all adjustable jets are open. 3. May have air lock. Prime pump by loosening top pump union. See page If gate valves are present, make sure they are all the way open and clips are installed. 5. If none of this works, possible line obstruction or impeller loose on pump drive shaft. No water or air flow to jet: 1. If adjustable jets, probably in off position. (At times the jets can lock into position. May require some effort.) 2. Pinched line, cutting off flow before reaching spa. 3. Water diverter valve, if present, may be closed. Replacing or fixing a jet: This is done by holding the silver facing of the jet in the palm of your hand and turning counter-clockwise past the stop of the jet. Once past the stop of the jet pull out on the jet. Turn the jets on at the control panel and make sure you are getting proper flow from the housing. Keep in mind that since there is no jet facing to concentrate the flow of water, the flow will be diminished. If the flow is good, hold the jet with the white part of the jet facing you. You will notice a raised rectangular-shaped bump on the black plastic part of the jet. Find the corresponding groove on the jet housing (still in the spa). Re-insert the jet, lining the raised rectangle with the groove, and smack the jet into place with your hand. This should solve a low flow/no flow jet problem. Air controls not working: 1. Remove cap on air valve, (with flat head screw driver) and make sure internals are not broken or improperly aligned. 2. If internals are broken, call tech support. Jets only have one speed: 1. Programming error: call tech support. 2. Button not responding: call tech support. Heat not working: 1. Make sure the desired temperature is higher than current temperature. 2. Make sure spa is in Standard mode. If in Economy or Sleep modes, the heater will only heat during filter cycle. If problem persists contact tech support. 23

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q: Why is my spa not heating? A: Check which mode you are in; standard, sleep, or economy. See page 11. The spa MUST be in STANDARD mode for continuous heating. If problem persists, please contact tech support. Q: Why does the system power input fuse (30 A) keep blowing? A: Chances are the control box is improperly wired or is connected to an insufficient power source. Check all wires to GFCI Breaker, and check all wires from GFCI to your control box. Make sure to replace any blown fuses with a fuse of the exact same type and rating. You may also have a faulty pump, ozonator, or element. Please contact tech support. Q: Why does the control panel display OH? A: 1. Overheat protection may occur if the pump is set to operate for extended filter cycles. 2. In extremely hot weather, check for proper cabinet ventilation. 3. Check gate valves. Make sure that they are open with clips installed. See page Check for blockage in the filter cartridge, skimmer basket and pump intake fittings. If problem persist please call tech support. Q: Why isn t the system maintaining the set temperature of the water? A: Make sure that the water temperature displayed on the topside panel is at least 1 degree below the heaters set temperature, and set the control to (standard mode). Q: The system is receiving proper voltage, why doesn t anything function? A: 1. Check for blown fuses, burn marks or signs of tampering in the box. 2. Power down the spa, and reset the GFCI. If problem persists contact tech support. Q: Why does the GFCI trip immediately upon power up? A: 1. If this is a new installation, make sure GFCI breaker is wired correctly. Refer to pages Disconnect all the components (pumps, ozonator, and plug them back in one at a time to verify which component is causing the GFCI to trip. 3. Check for any loose connections or cut wires in the box. If problem persist contact tech support. Q: Why is my spa running all the time? A: Check your filtration settings, you might be in continues filtration mode Filc or just set in a high filtration. Factory setting is F2 or Fil 2 which means your spa will filtrate 2 hours out of every 12 hours...twice a day. If problem persists contact tech support. Q: What the ozonator does: (The ozonator located inside your spa may either be a white or black box. See page 3.) A: An ozonator purifies naturally. It reduces the need for high chemical doses, helps destroy bacteria, viruses, algae and yeasts and oxidizes other contaminants to prolong equipment life. An ozonator reduces maintenance time and cost. Q: Why shouldn t I solely use an ozonator for water purification? A: Ozone dissipates very quickly and cannot be measured over time. High ozone concentration is not good for the spa s gaskets and seals. An ozonator used along with your favorite chemical system reduces the amount of chemicals needed. Q: How do I know if my ozonator is working? A: During a filter cycle, a green LED light on the ozonator will light and bubbles will move through the clear water line that connects to the ozonator. 24
