5 Case study : RTA project ( ; 1,2M CAN$) The aluminium industry Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) considers biomass as a source of renewable energy and coke to reduce its fossils consumption and have impacts on the host community Difficulty to secure the supply of forest biomass and residues despite its abundance in the area Why not producing their own biomass by producing algae using its own wastewater? 24/07/2015 BioFuelNet Canada 5

10 Salient results of RT-Algae process Achieving an algae biomass of 20% siccity only in one process Despite the cold episodes of Quebec, we can maintain all the production at minimum 20 o C during all the year with the energy waste of the smelter 36% of the algae biomass is converted to biocrude by HTL (lab scale only) 24/07/2015 BioFuelNet Canada 10

11 Economics and facts of RT-Algae process Preliminary data on CAPEX Under batch mode with Alga-Fuel tanks having 440 m 3 work volume each, 250 tanks are needed to produce T/yr! CAPEX 100M CAN$! Manpower = 11 % of total cost Having less tanks to operate, continously, can reduce the cost Nutrients = 10 % of total cost Impossible to secure enough cheap nutrient sources in the area of the smelter Must use raw sugars while cellulosic sugars could be used, but there are more costly at this time Other nutrients were surprisingly costly (P & Fe) 24/07/2015 BioFuelNet Canada 12

16 Lessons to remember If we colocate and conduct Predominantly-heterotrophic mixotrophic production in open tanks, the waste nutrients supplied by the industrial plant shall contain A lot of nutrients! Local cheap nutrients may be difficult to secure in a short range High valuable coproducts are required, mostly when low value products such as biofuels are targeted Sounds obvious, but many factors can influenced the amount of the desired coproduct(s) 24/07/2015 BioFuelNet Canada 16
