On behalf of the students, faculty, administrative and technical teams, I would like to welcome you to the School. This document is intended to help you make the most of all the opportunities EnsAD has to offer. It includes information on the academic year and its highlights, as well as details of optional classes, the allocation of ECTS credits, etc., to help you organise your study programme and provide the answers to any questions you might have. It also contains a wealth of practical information such as contacts and addresses to help facilitate your move to Paris. Mrs. Frédérique Bruelle, Head of international relations, is also at your disposal should you need to consult her. École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs The École nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (EnsAD), founded in 1766, is a public higher education institution under the authority of the Ministry of Culture and Communication. The school fosters intellectual, creative and artistic excellence, inspired by the principles of multidisciplinarity, partnership and innovation, under the direction of Geneviève Gallot, General Inspector of Artistic Creation and Education. In common with its peers in the English-speaking world, EnsAD offers its students ten departments of specialisation: Interior Design, Animation, Spatial Art, Multimedia / Graphic Design, Product Design, Textile and Texture Design, Fashion Design, Printed Images, Photo/ Video, Stage Design. The five-year course complies with European harmonisation of degree courses (LMD) requirements. Admission is by competitive entrance examination only, in the 1st, 2nd and 4th years. The school awards a diploma with Master s status, with a specialisation in one of the ten sectors on offer. The first year is a foundation year common to all students, introducing the fundamental concepts of space, object and image history of art, drawing, painting, sculpture, silkscreen printing, engraving, perspective, volume, colour, typography as well as photography, video, sound, animation and IT. The 2nd year is the first year of specialisation, which is pursued in the 3rd year. The 4th year marks the beginning of the project phase of the course, accompanied by a mandatory professional internship in France or abroad, possibly by a study programme at an overseas school or university, and by the production of a dissertation. The 5th year is dedicated to the Senior Project, the final stage leading to the award of the diploma. The School is actively engaged in numerous partnerships with companies (Badoit, Ikea, Cacharel, IFF, Tarkett, etc.), with professional organisations (VIA), prestigious schools such as Sciences-Po, the Centre de Formation des Journalistes, the Conservatoire national supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, the Ecole des Mines, and with cultural institutions such as the Centre Pompidou, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and the musée du Quai Branly. In addition, EnsAD has extensive international links with leading schools of art and design and with numerous universities. Located in the heart of Paris on the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, the School provides its students with 18 technical studios in which to put their academic theory into practice and learn to appreciate the constraints of project execution as they bring their ideas to life. The school also offers a research, creation and innovation programme (EnsadLab), designed as a research laboratory focusing on two areas: theoretical reflection in sociological, anthropological and artistic terms, and a design/execution component. This programme is open to EnsAD graduates and external candidates holding a Master s degree or equivalent. Plus: regular Encounter Studio Thursday meetings for a friendly get-together and sharing of ideas. Guest speakers, all leading figures in the cultural domain, share their experiences. A wide variety of guests have attended in the past: Pierre Etaix, Toni Negri, Jean-Claude Carrière, François Cheval, Nicolas Frize, Paul Ardenne, Yann Kersalé, Konstantin Grcic, etc.

The diploma of the Ecole nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs is an internal diploma awarded by the Director of the school in the name of the State. The diploma will enjoy Master s status with effect from 2012. It is awarded to students having obtained the total course credits (300 ECTS) and having successfully defended their dissertation and senior project before a jury whose composition is determined by the Director of the School. Under the terms of Chapter VI, article 53 of the school s internal regulations, overseas students on a study programme at the school, either as part of an exchange agreement or as part of the Erasmus programme, may not sit for the entrance examinations to the 2nd and 4th year, nor claim entitlement to the school s diploma.

Overseas student handbook Page 7 Since EnsAD does not award a University diploma, overseas students attending courses are not eligible for the EnsAD diploma. They will, however, be issued with a certificate of ECTS credits obtained. Overseas students are accepted for a full semester and are generally admitted into the 4th year. Exceptions may be made in certain cases, however, and a student may be accepted for a second semester at the discretion of the Director of Studies and Department Coordinator. The maximum length of study programme available to any overseas student is one year. Overseas students accepted into the school are required to attend every course in the sector to which they have been accepted. Students will be issued with the course programme and internal regulations of the school when completing administrative registration formalities. 2. Course presentation The course is organised over five years: the first year is a foundation year common to all students at the school; this is followed by four years of specialisation in one of the ten sectors offered by the School: Interior Architecture, Spatial Art, Animation, Product Design, Multimedia / Graphic Design, Textile and Texture Design, Fashion Design, Printed Images, Photo/Video, Stage Design The foundation year and each specialisation department are coordinated by a faculty member elected by colleagues. The Director and the Director of Studies set the teaching guidelines following discussions with the college of coordinators, consultation with the Studies and Research Council and approval by the school s Board of Administration. The aim of the course is to prepare students for the creative professions, provide opportunities for real academic progress open to the issues of modern society, and enable each student to make his or her mark as a creative designer in a perpetually changing professional world. EnsAD has constructed its curriculum to offer a perfect symbiosis between the specialist department subjects and the crosscutting subjects. In addition, the School encourages relations between the disciplines and with external partners, professional, institutional and academic. Academic year and ECTS validation (see Appendix 4) 1st semester 15 weeks of classes, from the first Monday in October to the third Friday in January. Christmas vacation: last two weeks of December. Issue of marks: the last Friday at the end of the 1st semester of courses for which you are enrolled. At the end of this handbook, you will find a copy of the assessment form that you should have completed and signed by the course teacher at the end of each semester (see Appendix 1). A course certificate will be issued based on the assessment forms you submit to Frédérique Bruelle, Head of International Relations.

Page 8 Overseas student handbook This certificate will list all the courses you have attended and the number of credits obtained during your study programme at EnsAD. You should allow 15 days for this certificate to be issued at the end of your programme. Between the end of the 1st semester and the beginning of the 2nd, there is an intermediate week set aside for the school Open Days and assessment commissions. 2nd semester 15 weeks of classes from the last Monday in January to the end of the last week in May. Winter vacation : 1 week at the end of February Spring vacation : 3rd week in April Registration : 4th week in January Issue of marks : during the 3rd week in May Issue of marks : at the end of the 2nd semester of courses for which you are enrolled. At the end of this handbook, you will find a copy of the assessment form that you should have completed and signed by the course teacher at the end of each semester (see Appendix 1). Assessment methods and ECTS validation EnsAD offers its students a course structured according to the ECTS system. Subjects are organised into teaching units, to which a given number of credits is assigned. The academic unit is the semester. A semester carries 30 credits. An academic year consists of two semesters and thus carries 60 credits. The average mark obtained by the student for each course unit determines the credits obtained. Credits are assigned to the various components or teaching unit. The number of credits reflects the student s overall work classroom hours and volume of personal work. Students aptitudes and knowledge are checked by means of continuous assessment of written, oral and practical work. 4. First day of term and enrolment The first day of term will be the first Monday in October of the academic year. Student reception will be followed by visits to the technical studios, IT department and library. Classes begin on the first Tuesday in October. All documents relating to your Erasmus exchange (Learning Agreement and arrival sheet) will be approved by Frédérique Bruelle, Head of International Relations, when you enrol. Admission into the 4th year Overseas students are generally admitted into the 4th year. The 4th year timetable is generally organised as follows: Monday : classes specific to the specialist sector, Tuesday : classes specific to the specialist sector, Wednesday : classes specific to the specialist sector in the morning, afternoon free, Thursday : history of art and open studios (plastic expression studios), Friday : open studios (plastic expression studios). These studios are generally attended by 2nd and 3rd year students, but special exceptions are made for overseas students.

Overseas student handbook Page 9 5. Enrolment in optional courses A meeting will be held on the first Tuesday in October to provide information on these two optional classes. Plastic expression studios Attending plastic expression studios carries 2 credits per semester. Studios are held: Monday from 9 am to 12 pm and from 1 pm to 4 pm; Thursday from 3 pm to 6 pm; Friday from 9 am to 12 pm and from 1 pm to 7 pm. Studio timetables will be handed out at enrolment. Students should register for each studio directly with the teacher concerned. Students are admitted to these classes by the teacher on the basis of motivation and abilities. Studios available : Drawing Painting Silkscreen printing Mosaic/wall art Sculpture Engraving 3D CGI animation Photo History of Art course The History of Art course carries two credits per semester. The course offers a choice of three lectures every Thursday for a semester, at 9 am, 11 am or 1 pm. To enrol, from the second Monday in October (first semester) or from end January (second semester), students should enter their name on the lists available on the tables outside the Student Affairs offices (1st floor, office 1.16) and on the History of Art notice boards. 6. Mandatory enrolment in French classes for overseas students These classes are mandatory for all overseas students admitted onto a study programme. The French class carries one credit per semester. Mrs. Véronique Teyssandier teaches French as a foreign language (Français langue étrangère, FLE). At the beginning of the semester, students should enrol with Mrs. Véronique Teyssandier and have their level of French tested. Classes are available at two levels. Classes are held twice a week in room 222, on Monday and Wednesday from 5.30 pm to 8.30 pm. French as a foreign language level 1 This class is for beginners who have already had a limited introduction to French. It aims to consolidate and develop basic grasp of grammar and to familiarise the student with certain aspects of French society. Points of grammar addressed: verbs in the present indicative, past (imperfect, perfect), articles, possessives, direct and indirect pronouns, different forms of the negative, interrogative.

Page 10 Overseas student handbook French as a foreign language level 2 This class is for intermediate-level students who have acquired a certain ease in speaking. It deepens students knowledge of grammar in order to improve oral and written expression. It also seeks to provide students with further information to help them understand the society of the country they are living in for a few months, particularly through articles from the press. Artistic and cultural themes related to the sectors of specialisation within the school will also be addressed. 7. Administrative registration Administrative registration takes place on the Monday and Tuesday of the last week of September. Each overseas student accepted on a study programme is sent an acceptance letter and an agreement. Before arriving in Paris, each overseas student should: 1. Return a signed copy of the agreement and send (by e-mail) an identity photo (format jpeg 480 x 640 pixels) and a photocopy of their health and personal accident insurance and their Social Security number to the following address : Frédérique Bruelle, Head of International Relations 31, rue d Ulm 75240 cedex 05, frederique.bruelle@ensad.fr 2. Where necessary, complete the application form for overseas student admission (see the application form available on the website: Ensad.fr > studies > teaching > international relations > enrolment procedures (see Appendix 2). Registration fees The following are not required to pay registration fees: students of ENSAD partner schools in Europe and students accepted on exchange programmes between institutions. These students should nevertheless ensure that they are enrolled with their establishment of origin. All other overseas students not enrolled in an ENSAD partner institution will be asked to pay registration fees of 360. A statement of financial details is issued to every overseas student required to pay registration fees. A student card is issued, valid for one semester. The validity of the card will be extended if the study programme is extended beyond one semester. E-mail address Once your administrative registration and academic enrolment formalities are completed, your e-mail address and home page will be created for you automatically (you will then need to activate your password). Your e-mail address will be made up as follows: firstname.lastname@ensad.fr The School will use your e-mail address to send you the school newsletter, which provides full information on the life of the school and announcements of forthcoming events or lectures, in particular for the regular Thursday Encounter Studio at 6 pm, as well as information on external competitions, exhibitions, etc. Intranet and Internet Students should also regularly consult the school website (www.ensad.fr) and Intranet (intranet.ensad.fr) : notices of examinations are posted here. The Intranet provides information in the student space on course content, internship and job offers.

You can consult your e-mails from outside the school using the following link: http://webmail.ensad.fr. Overseas student card Once your administrative registration and academic enrolment formalities are completed, please see Martine Nicot, IT Service (Erasme, M-03), for the issue of your overseas student card for one of the 10 sectors. The card bears your registration number, the duration of your study programme and the year of studies. The EnsAD student card allows you access to the various studios and to the library. As an EnsAD student, you are entitled to free access to Paris museums and national monuments, as well as special student reductions on temporary exhibitions and in cinemas. 8. Internships EnsAD is unable to provide overseas students with the requisite agreements covering internships with companies. Only the student s establishment of origin may issue such a document. 9. Practical information The school - Floor plans (see Appendix 3) - Ground floor Bachelier and Rodin lecture theatres - First floor - The library is open every day from Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 6 pm, except on the first and third Monday of each month, when it opens at 11 am. The library remains open during vacations, except during the one month closure in August and over the Christmas period. Library rules are included in the EnsAD internal regulations, Appendix 7, issued to each student on joining the school. - Equipment loan: please contact the loans department (Ulm 1-20) for the loan of cameras or video cameras. - Second floor Printing department: purchase your photocopying card (rechargeable) at the entrance to the department, room 2.08. - Courtyard The Pavillon Vissol is located in the courtyard and houses: - the cafeteria - the Student Committee (BDE), on the 3rd floor of the Pavillon Vissol (e-mail address: bde@ensad.fr, tel. + 33 (0) 1 42 34 97 42) The Student Committee is elected each year. - the Alumni Association (Association des Anciens Élèves) (the President of the Association des Anciens Élèves is Laurent Marty de Montereau). Page 12 Overseas student handbook Staying in Paris To simplify procedures for overseas students, the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris student halls of residence and the City of Paris have created a structure specifically for newly arrived students that brings together in one place all the necessary public agencies, so that all the requisite formalities can be handled on the spot. From early September through to the beginning of December, overseas students can thus complete all the necessary administrative formalities at a single location. The department is staffed by a multilingual team (French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Bulgarian, Hindi, Russian, Chinese, Arabic). Reception officers provide students with information and advice on all practical issues relating to their move to Paris. You can also obtain advice from the unit online, by logging on to the website: www.ciup.fr//service d accueil des étudiants étrangers. We strongly recommend that, as soon as you receive confirmation of your acceptance at EnsAD, you sign up online to start making preparations for your stay in Paris, to consult all the information available regarding your stay (particularly on the subject of accommodation) and get answers to all the practical questions relating to your move to Paris. - Health insurance Non-European nationals under the age of 28 on study programmes of over 3 months and who are unable to provide proof of adequate health insurance cover must register with the student Social Security system on enrolment (189 hrs). - Registration Students register with the Social Security system when they enrol at EnsAD with Frédérique Bruelle, Head of International Relations. The accompanying contribution must be paid at the beginning of the academic year at the same time as the registration fees. - Reimbursements Reimbursements of medical expenses are made by the Social Security centre chosen by the student on registration, either LMDE or SMEREP. If you are aged over 28 and do not hold a French government grant, you should take out personal health insurance with the Caisse Primaire d Assurance Maladie.
