String Railway An imagination-stretching game by Hisashi Hayashi 2 5 players Ages 8 and up ompete against other railway tycoons by randomly drawing station cards and astutely putting them into play. e prepared to cope with mountainous terrain and cross a river as you create twisting, turning tracks with the aim of winning points and creating the most profitable railroad! ontents - 1 black string with red and white marks (the playing area) - 1 light blue string (the river) - 1 brown string (the mountain) - 20 short strings in five different colors (short tracks) - 5 long strings in five different colors (long tracks) - 5 Starting Stations in five different colors - 35 station tiles - 20 trains in five different colors - 50 victory point tokens According to the number of players, place the black string as follows: With 2 or 4 players: Form a square using the white marks. With 3 players: Form a triangle using the white marks (two must touch). With 5 players: Form a pentagon using the red marks. Place the river (represented by the light blue string) inside the playing area. Lay it out in a random manner without allowing the string to cross itself. One end may extend outside of the black string. Place the mountain (represented by the brown string) inside the playing area, giving it the layout you want without allowing the string to cross itself. Rules of the Game Goal of the Game Win the most points by creating the most profitable railway network. Setup Each player chooses a color. They receive a Starting Station, five strings and four trains of their color. They place one of their trains on the Starting Station and obtain 3 points (PTS). With 2 players: Each chooses two colors, which will be played alternately. With 5 players: Each returns the shortest string to the box. Shuffle the station tiles and place them face down in a pile. Place your station at a corner of the playing area (next to a red or white mark). With 2 players: Place your two starting stations in opposite corners. 2 3
A D The player then places the station(s) they drew inside the playing area according to the following rules: A station must not touch any strings. A station must not touch any other stations. Example of a game with 4 players: A) Each white mark corresponds to a corner of the playing area. ) The Starting Stations touch the corners of the playing area. ) The mountain is inside the playing area. D) Only one end of the river goes outside the playing area. Game Play Randomly determine the first player During their turn, each player performs the following three actions: 1. Draw and place a station tile. 2. Place a railway track (a string of their color). 3. Score victory points (PTS). After a player completes all three actions, the game continues clockwise. 1. Draw and place a station tile The player draws a station tile. If it is a ountryside station, they immediately draw a second tile. However, they never get more than two cards (even if both are ountryside stations). Exception: In the first round, the first player draws and places two tiles (three if one of them is a ountryside station). 2. Place a railway track The player chooses one of their strings (either short or long) and places it in the playing area. The string should be placed according to the following rules: oth ends of the string must touch a station. One end of the string must touch the player s Starting Station or a station already reached by one of the players strings. The station s limit must be respected. All stations have a limit on the number of players who may touch them. Example: a Suburban station [limit 2] can only accept strings from two players. The string cannot cross itself. A string may cross over another string (the player s own or an opponent s, the river or the mountain) with a penalty. A string may cross over a string in a station without penalty. If the player is the first to reach a Town or Transfer station, they place one of their trains on it to indicate that they own it. It is advantageous to cross several stations along the way, as long as the rules above are followed. 3. Score victory points The player scores victory points (PTS) according to the following rules: Each new station that a player s string touches earns them X PTS (where X is the number indicated on the station card). They cannot earn points from stations 4 5
they have already touched, except for a Junction (see Description of the Stations). If the string touches a town or a Transfer station, the owner of the station gains or loses PTS (see Description of the Stations). Each time the string crosses another string (the player s own, that of another player, the river or the mountain) they suffer a penalty of -1 PTS. There is no penalty if a string crosses over another string in a station. haotic Variant The playing area may have any shape (potato-shaped, round, the shape of a country, etc.). eware: This can increase the difficulty of the game. Description of the Stations Legend of Symbols 3 PTS Points that the station earns the players. A The station belongs to the first player to enter it. The player puts one of their trains on that space. 3 PTS Points that the owner gets by placing their train on that space. (They don t get the points of the station.) -1 PT Penalty for the owner of the station if an opponent touches it. END / FIN Only the end of a string can be placed on this station. A) No penalty (the strings cross in a train station) ) -1 point for each string crossed (opponent s string, mountain, river) ) The two ends of a string must end in a station. One of these stations must either be the player s Starting Station or a station they ve already touched. +1 Draw one more station (at most one extra per turn). +1 PT Points that a player gets every time one of their strings touch this station. 5 Player limit on a station. End of the Game When all players have placed their strings (five turns/four turns with 5 players) the player with the most victory points wins. If there is a tie, the players share the victory. If there is a tie in a 2-player game, the players add the points of their two colors to determine the winner.
