A SUMMARY OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS, QUALITY INSURANCE AND ACCREDITATION AGENCIES, AND PROFESSIONAL BODIES FOR THE EURO-AGES PROGRAM COUNTRY SUMMARY BELGIUM Through the Geological Survey of Belgium 1
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY OF THIS SURVEY The HEI s in Belgium have basically the same framework for their geological education. They are all organized according to the Bologna process since september 2004, where the education in geology is based on a three-leveled scale; Bachelor (3 years), Master (2 years), and PhD-level (3 years). Every degree has a fixed number of credits and a full year of studies equals 60 ECTs. In total 20 to 50 graduates in Geology are produced by the Belgian Universities/year. 1.- INTRODUCTION The universities in Belgium adapted their education towards the Bologna process since 2004. The aims for this were primarily to simplify the movements between different universities both on a national and international level. The goal was of course also to increase the job opportunities after graduation. All countries in Europe are going to have the same structure of education on three levels; Bachelor- Master and PhD degrees. 2.- IMPLEMENTATION OF THE BOLOGNA PROCESS Since the constitutional reforms of 1989, education is no longer organized or subsidized by the state, but is administered by the education ministries of each of the three linguistic communities. The implementation of a Bologna-compliant two cycle structure started in 2004/05, with the gradual phasing out of the old structure by 2011. 2.1 Creation of two major courses in place of candidatures and licenses: - A cycle of three years minimum to become Bachelor - A second cycle (one or two years) called Master. In the case of the master, all studies lasting 4 or 5 years except medicine and veterinary medicine. As for the former 3rd cycles, they are cast in the master system in two years. Then, a postgraduate degree leading to Doctor (PhD) exists after specific training and a thesis. 180 credits in addition to 300 degree of Master. 2
2.2. Changes for the students: - The education programs are now presented in credits (hours of lectures, courses, surveys, assignments, exams) and one year of study corresponds to 60 credits). - The tests provided in January will exempt students with additional opportunities in June and September. - The threshold for success in a course is 10/20 but graduating needs an overall average of 12/20. - Years are divided into semesters. 2.3. Universities synergies In Belgium, three academies were created around the UCL, ULB and Ulg universities including other smaller universities to organize the research. These same universities combined with high schools and colleges will form clusters in order to make offer a comprehensive training, organizing complementarities, economies of scale and prepare themselves to compete with the European mega-universities, grouping several thousand students. In the French Community, the UMH (Université Mons-Hainaut) has been associated with the FPMs (Faculté Polytechnique de Mons); ULg with FUSAGX (Facultés Universitaire agronomiques de Gembloux) ; UCL with FUNDP (Facultés Universitaires Notre-Dame de la Paix, Namur), FUSL (Facultés Universitaires Saint-Louis) and FUCAM (Facultés Universitaires Catholiques de Mons) 3.- THE EDUCATION IN GEOLOGY 3.1. The structure of the education in Geology Geology studies are organized into three cycles as other education. The undergraduate and graduate studies correspond to the base. The undergraduate (1st cycle) leads to the academic degree of bachelor. Its duration is three years (180 credits). It validates a basic training necessary to address the second cycle. 3
The graduate degree (2nd cycle) leads to the academic degrees of master (two years (120 credits). These studies include a 'specialized' education and the presentation of a thesis study. Graduate degree is 120 credits or more, and include at least a choice of 30 specific credits from one of the following orientations: The teaching objective : which includes teacher training in specific application of the decree of February 8, 2001 defining the initial training for qualified upper secondary education or the decree of May 17, 1999 on higher education. It is organized for academic degrees relevant to the qualifications required for this occupation. The research focus : prepare scientific research and includes both depth study in a particular discipline and general training in the research profession. This option is only provided for the academic fields of study referred to in Article 31 of that decree. The specialization : in a particular discipline of the field which is connected the curriculum designed for professional or artistic skills special. Universities organize one or more orientations, possibly several different specializations. The postgraduate studies include : doctoral education (60 credits) leading to a certificate of training in research work to preparing a doctoral thesis (corresponding to at least 180 credits), which leads to the academic degree of doctor after defending the thesis This training is acquired after an initial training of at least 300 credits resulting in an academic degree of master. Among them, 60 doctoral credits can be acquired during doctoral training stated above. 3.2. Universities offering geological Programs in the Country 4 universities issue academic bachelor, master and doctoral degrees in geology : * Universiteit Gent, Ghent * Katholieke Universiteit Leuven * Université de Liège, Liège * Université Libre de Bruxelles, Brussels 2 university issues academic bachelor degree in geology : 4

Number of freshman students and graduates in the country In total 20 to 50 graduates in Geology are produced by the Belgian Universities/year. 4.- LEARNING OUTCOMES 4.1.Definition of learning outcomes There is no definition on the national level of a qualification framework in the field of Geology. It is entirely the responsibility of the individual HEI to define its own learning outcomes for Geology programmes. 4.2. Academic and professional learning outcomes/competence profiles for study programs in geology Elaborated learning outcomes for Geology programmes are not available. 5

5.- PROFESSIONAL PRE-REQUISITES There are no professional bodies which define additional pre requisites. However the institution board at each HEI bases the learning outcomes partly on expectations of national stake holders. 6.- ACCREDITATION SYSTEMS For the flemish community, a special accreditation body known as the Nederlands-Vlaams Accreditatie Orgaan (www.nvao.net) has been established in close cooperation with the Netherlands. The certifications of the Dutch and Flemish qualifications framework have been published on the Bologna- and ENIC-NARIC Internet sites. 12
