Close all programs and background tasks, including virus scanners. Insert the Re-Mission DVD (or disc 1 if you are installing the CD version) into the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive. NOTE: If the autorun menu does not automatically appear, left-click the Windows START button from the Windows Taskbar and select Run. Then type d:\setup.exe in the Run dialogue box, then left-click OK (substitute the correct letter of your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive if it is something other than D: ). Select NEXT when the welcome window for Re-Mission InstallShield appears. You can now read the Re-Mission License Agreement, which details the Epilepsy Warning and the Disclaimer of Warranty. You must read the License Agreement and choose the selection for I accept the terms of the license agreement. Once selected, the NEXT button will become available. Select NEXT to proceed. The minimum and recommended system specifications are now listed, detailing necessary hardware and software. Select NEXT to proceed. A system check is then performed to determine if your computer is capable of running Re-Mission. Select CLOSE on the System Configuration screen if all of the boxes appear check-marked in green. NOTE: If a box is red, you may close the System Configuration screen and continue the install, however, that aspect of the application is below specifications and may not function properly. 4 5

5 Select a destination path for the game, or use the default path, and select NEXT. Select either Complete, Custom, Minimum or Normal install (DVD only).» Complete: Installs the complete application (Recommended).» Custom: Select the components you wish to install (Expert only).» Minimum: Installs only the application. The resources will read from the DVD as you play.» Normal: Installs everything except the movies. The movies will be accessed from the DVD as you play. We recommend the Complete install if there is sufficient space on your hard drive. This will give Re-Mission the best performance. Select NEXT to continue. NOTE: The CD version of Re-Mission can only install a complete version of the game. Be sure to place each disc into the CD-ROM as prompted. Select INSTALL and the installation will begin. After the install is completed, the final screen will ask if you want a shortcut on the desktop and if you d like to view the readme file. A shortcut on the desktop will make it easier to start the game. Please view the readme for any last minute changes to the game and to get information on troubleshooting. You can also view the readme file at any time by going to the Windows taskbar and selecting Start\Programs\HopeLab\Re-Mission\Read Me. Left-click the button marked FINISHED and remove the Re-Mission disc when the InstallShield is done. The disc is not required if a complete install has been done. Uninstalling/Reinstalling the Game To Uninstall Re-Mission: Left-click the Windows START button from the Windows Taskbar and select Programs\HopeLab\Re-Mission\Uninstall. When the InstallShield screen appears, select Remove and leftclick the NEXT button. Left-click YES to confirm you wish to remove the application and all its features. At the prompt Do you want to delete Save files? make your choice to keep your old game profiles or delete them. Left-click the button marked FINISHED when the InstallShield is done. To Reinstall Re-Mission: When reinstalling the game, be sure to uninstall the game first as described above. Then follow the installation instructions under the section Installing the Game. If you originally created a Minimum, Normal or Custom installation of the DVD version of the game, additional components can be installed on your hard drive. Place the Re-Mission disc into the drive. Left-click the Windows START button from the Windows Taskbar and select Run. Type d:\setup.exe in the Run dialogue box, then left-click OK (substitute the correct letter of your DVD-ROM drive if it is something other than D: ). When the InstallShield screen appears, select Modify and left-click NEXT. Check-mark the components you wish to add to your hard drive and left-click NEXT. 6 7

6 History of the Project By the year 2024, nanotechnology had evolved as a practical means for gene therapy and drug induction. Revolutions in nano-circuitry and artificial intelligence had led to the creation of miniscule robots, capable of autonomous operation from both pre-programmed and acquired knowledge. Dr. West applied this technology to health science by creating the Nanotech Chronic Illness Treatment Program. Her creations were self-aware, A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) nanobots capable of fighting illness at a cellular level. In 2025, the SMT 100 was the first generation of nanobots tested in humans with cancer. They met with moderate success. In 2027, the technology evolved to its current prototype, the RX5-E class. RX5-E Roxxi Design: RX Nanotech humanoid robot Size: 510 nanometers (510 X 10-9 m) A.I. Generation: 5 Self-aware, learning Class: E Endotropic combat chassis Purpose: Chronic illness fighter On-Board Advisor: S M T 100 Weaponry: Multi-purpose med blaster Protocol: Injected into people with cancer, this nanobot is designed to fight cancer and infections at a cellular level, monitor patient health, and report symptoms with the aim of helping patients conquer their disease. Starting the Game The game can be started by either double-clicking on the Re-Mission icon on the desktop or by going to the Taskbar and selecting Start\ Programs\HopeLab\Re-Mission\Re-Mission. After the game loads, select one of the three languages: English, French or Spanish. Following the introductory animations, the Login/Quit screen will appear. NOTE: If the game is left idle for several seconds, a demonstration of scenes in the game will be shown. Click the mouse button or press any key to stop the animation. Select LOGIN to go to the Login screen. Select NEW to go to the Enter Profile Name screen. Create a Profile Name, and enter its characters by selecting them on the grid with the left mouse button. Delete characters by pressing the right mouse button or Backspace key. Select ACCEPT when finished. The Tutorials screen will appear. Select Lesson 1: Basic Movement first. We recommend playing through all three tutorial lessons before beginning the missions. When you are ready, select Main Menu. Next time, when you select your saved profile, you will be taken directly to the Main Menu. However, you can always go back to the Tutorials by selecting it from the Main Menu. NOTE: The ESC key will take the user to the previous screen. During gameplay the ESC key will pause the game. Holographic Guidance 8 Holographic Guidance is provided by an S M T 100 Mentor Unit. An A.I. chip from this retired nanobot model is embedded into Roxxi to act as a learned guide and simulated holographic companion. The advisor is removed from view during combat, but will continue to provide audio suggestions and occasional guidance through a holographic navigational arrow. 9

7 Starting a Mission From the Main Menu, select Start Mission. The Patient Location screen will appear with a map of the United States. Only one state will be available in the beginning. This state will appear in green. Other states will become available as missions are completed. Select California and a list of patients will appear. The first patient is John Davies. Another patient will become available after each successful mission. Left-click on the patient s name and the Patient History screen will appear. Left-click on the arrow(s) to view the following screens: Patient History: A brief medical history of the patient including diagnosis. Mission Briefing: Dr. West gives you a briefing of your assignment. Objectives: A list of objectives that needs to be completed in order to be successful in the mission. When ready, left-click on Launch. The mission will begin to load. When loading is complete, click the left mouse button or Enter key to continue. An animation will appear, giving you important information about your mission. When the game begins, you will play as Roxxi, a Nanotech Humanoid Robot inside the patient s body. A HUD (Heads Up Display) will aid you as you move through the patient. (See pages for more information on the HUD.) The main HUD systems are: Radar: Displays an overhead scan of the local region of the body. Navigation Arrow: Directs Roxxi to the nearest objective, if not on radar. Energy Level: Displays Roxxi s current energy level. Patient Stats: Displays the patient s heart rate, temperature, or nausea level. Med Levels: Displays the available medicine and the amount of available ammo. Use the keyboard/mouse controls listed under Controls on the following pages to move Roxxi, and the mouse buttons to fire weapons. Be on the lookout for objects that give Roxxi energy, additional ammo, and new weapons. They are activated by moving through them or by using the Use key (Spacebar)

Default Keyboard and Mouse Controls Friendly Characters B Cells and Dendritic Cells These friendly cells in Re-Mission are found in the bloodstream and lymphatic system. They can collide with Roxxi, changing her trajectory. The player should not destroy friendly cells since they fight off infections. Definition: B cells and dendritic cells are part of the immune system. B cells secrete antibodies into the body fluid while dendritic cells help regulate the immune system by presenting foreign proteins and activating other immune cells. Together, they help to fight foreign substances that cause infections, disease, or poisoning. Pause Dodge Left Alternate Weapon Spin Target Lock Move Left Reverse Accelerate Move Up Dodge Right Move Right Turn 180º Move Down Use Macrophage and T Cells Using a marker gun, Roxxi is able to mark specific bacteria for the macrophage or T cells to attack and devour. Definition: Macrophage and T cells are also part of the immune system. Macrophages engulf and destroy foreign material such as bacteria in the body, while T cells help activate and stimulate different parts of the immune system. 9 Platelets In Re-Mission, platelets will not affect Roxxi s movement through the blood stream. Definition: Platelets are blood cells that help the blood to clot. They prevent abnormal or excessive bleeding and hemorrhaging by traveling to the site in the body that is cut or injured and plugging up the damage. Platelets are produced in the bone marrow. Red Blood Cells Red blood cells in Re-Mission will slow Roxxi s movement through the blood stream if she bumps into them. Definition: Red blood cells are produced by stem cells in the bone marrow. They travel through the blood stream carrying oxygen throughout the body. Having low red blood cells is called anemia and makes you feel tired without enough energy from oxygen. Enemy Characters Bacteria In Re-Mission, there are a variety of bacteria that can harm Roxxi. Some will cling to the tissue wall and attack Roxxi. Others will fire projectiles, or leech energy from her whenever they make contact. Definition: Bacteria are one-celled microscopic organisms that may cause disease. Many bacteria are harmless, and several are even beneficial. In immunocompromised patients, however, bacteria can be quite deadly. Brain Tumor Cancer Cell A brain tumor cancer cell in Re-Mission can move throughout the level and breed subordinate brain tumor masses. A brain tumor mass can clamp onto surrounding tissue and fire duplicates of itself at Roxxi while clamped. Other brain tumor cells are free-floating and can fire at Roxxi while in mid-air. Definition: A brain tumor cancer cell is an abnormal growth in the brain. It will clone itself and metastasize (spread) by breaking off, traveling through the body, and taking up residence at a new site. Fat Globule Fat globules are only in the bone marrow and will impede Roxxi s movement. Leukemia Cells In Re-Mission, leukemia cells stay together in groups and will divide to increase their numbers. Most leukemia cells will attack Roxxi when she approaches, while some have the ability to hurl other leukemia cells in her direction. A slightly larger and faster leukemia cell is more resistant to Roxxi s weapons, and will rapidly spawn new leukemia cells as it moves. Definition: Leukemia cells are young cells that proliferate by cloning and cannot stop, crowding out and killing the normal cells in the bone marrow. They metastasize (spread) by breaking away, traveling through the body, and taking up residence at a new site

10 Lymphoma Cells In Re-Mission, lymphoma cells stay together in colonies and divide quickly. If Roxxi enters their attack range, the lymphoma cells will dash toward her, causing injury. Certain lymphoma cells are more aggressive while others are more resistant to Roxxi s chemo attacks. Definition: Lymphoma cells are found in both Hodgkin s disease and non-hodgkin s lymphoma. The lymphoma cells will break off, travel through the body and take up residence at a new site. They originally come from lymph nodes. Mouth Sores In Re-Mission, mouth sores within the throat will cause damage to Roxxi if she fails to avoid them. They also spout out mucus that can damage Roxxi. Definition: Mouth sores are an inflammation of the soft tissues in the mouth. Mucous Drops and Mucous Sludge In Re-Mission, mucous drops and mucous sludge are fluids expelled by bacterial infections. A mucous drop is falling mucus that can hit Roxxi, reducing her energy level. Mucous sludge clings to the mucous membrane, causing Roxxi damage if she runs into them. Neuronal Impulses In Re-Mission, neuronal impulses are electrical impulses that flare up within the brain and spine due to stress, and are capable of damaging Roxxi. Some impulses are stationary while others cycle through patterns of opening and closing. Nerve impulse flares are sometimes generated between neuronal arches. These flares can be lowered through activation of the proper relax tap. Definition: Neurons carry electrical signals and transmit signals to adjacent neurons by secreting specific chemicals called neuro-transmitters. Osteosarcoma Cells In Re-Mission, the osteosarcoma cells move in groups and tend to attack in pairs. Some osteosarcoma cells hide in the osteoid pools while others cluster inside bone dome structures. These types of osteosarcoma cells will damage Roxxi by throwing volleys of osteoid at her. Definition: Osteosarcoma cells proliferate by cloning themselves. They metastasize (spread) by breaking away, traveling through the body, and taking up residence at a new site. Osteoblasts are bone-building cells running out of control. They make a gooey muck called osteum that, under normal circumstances, would harden into bone

11 Stool Jag A stool jag is a hardened stool pile resembling a jagged, stalagmite-shaped protrusion rising from the stool in the colon. The stool jags are able to puncture the lining of the colon allowing for a bacterial infection. Broken fragments from the destruction of the stool jag can injure Roxxi and cause stool to adhere to her armor, slowing her down. Definition: A stool jag is a jagged, sharp, rock-like chunk of the stool. Heads Up Display (HUD) Tactical View Screen VIEW: The view of the world is a computer-generated approximation of the inside of the patient s body the surroundings, cells, and body chemistry. The view is exaggerated to easily identify enemy cells and medicines. RADAR NAVIGATION ARROW PATIENT STATS Reed-Sternberg Cell In Re-Mission, Reed-Sternberg cells are frequently surrounded by a shield of dead T cells, making it difficult for Roxxi to get a clear shot. The dead T cells need to be destroyed first before Roxxi can harm the Reed-Sternberg cell. The Reed-Sternberg cell can also throw dead T cells or protoplasm at Roxxi. Definition: A Reed-Sternberg cell is an abnormal type of cell found only in Hodgkin s disease (but never in non-hodgkin s lymphoma). It metastasizes by breaking away, traveling through the body, and taking up residence at a new site. ENERGY MED LEVELS Radar The radar in the upper left part of the screen displays an overhead scan of the local region of the body based on sensor readings. current position and facing cancer or bacteria cells friendly cells and currents objective direction ammo or communication taps 18 19

12 Energy Level Navigation Arrow This arrow points to the nearest objective if it is off the radar. The arrow s color will vary depending on the type of objective. For example, red for a group of enemies, and yellow for a communication tap (see Communication Taps on page 24). The meter in the lower left corner of the screen represents Roxxi s energy level. Patient Stats The gauge in the top right corner of the screen represents a patient s stats relevant to the current mission. BPM PULSE METER: The patient s heart-rate is measured in beats per minute (bpm). Stress, anxiety, and nausea all impact the heart-rate. ENERGY METER: The Energy Meter is used to gauge Roxxi s energy level. If the energy meter is depleted, Roxxi will power down and will be unable to continue with her mission. DEFENSE SHIELD METER: When the Defensive Shield is activated, the Defense Shield Meter surrounds the Energy Meter with a glowing green field. The glowing green field will drop in level as it absorbs hits from the enemy. FEVER METER: This meter reflects the patient s temperature in infection missions. Spreading bacteria will increase the fever. When the fever spikes, the mission fails. NAUSEA METER: This meter shows how close the patient is to vomiting. As nausea is controlled, the meter will go down

13 Med Levels The icon in the lower right corner of the screen represents the available medicines. These meds are the ammunition for Roxxi s multi-purpose blaster. There are a variety of med types, each associated with a different trigger button. By default these are Fire Weapon 1 and Fire Weapon 2. CHEMO BLASTER: This is your available chemo blaster ammo. This is the very first type of ammo Roxxi will have available to her in the game. Chemo Ammunition = Fire Weapon 1 to Fire BACTO BLASTER: This is your available antibiotic ammo. Some missions require two types of ammo. If two types of ammo are used, the second fire button will become available for use. Antibiotic Ammunition = Fire Weapon 2 to Fire Power-Ups ENERGY POWER-UPS: Roxxi s energy is restored by absorbing some of the nutrients from the patient s dietary intake. When a patient eats, more energy is available. These power-ups can vary in size, giving Roxxi different amounts of energy. AMMO POWER-UPS: Refills Roxxi s weapon. These power-ups can also vary in size, giving Roxxi different amounts of ammo. ROCKET POWER-UPS: Arms Roxxi with either Chemo or Antibiotic Rockets. Use the Alternate Weapon command to toggle between Rockets and Roxxi s basic weapon. DEFENSIVE SHIELD POWER-UPS: Pick up this item to activate the Defensive Shield. It will give Roxxi a boost of energy which creates a Defensive Shield that can absorb damage. ROCKETS: Some weapons have rocket-like projectiles that pack a bigger punch and explode on impact, damaging nearby targets. To access these, when available, press the Alternate Weapon button. Press the Alternate Weapon button again to toggle them off. Rocket Weaponry = Alternate Weapon to Toggle 22 23

14 Communication Taps Roxxi transmits and receives information with the outside world through microscopic relay devices strategically planted in the patient called communication taps. These taps have a wireless connection to a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) carried by the patient or doctor. Each tap serves a unique function. Taps surrounded by enemy cells cannot be activated until the surrounding cells are destroyed. MED TAP: This tap reminds a patient to take medication, such as chemo and antibiotics, and generates ammo for Roxxi. ENERGY TAP: This tap requests that the patient eat food, which provides energy for Roxxi. RELAX TAP: This tap advises the patient to relax to manage nausea, anxiety, or pain. This, in turn, makes it easier for Roxxi to travel through the body. RADIATION TAP: Activating this tap calls for a radiation beam in the immediate vicinity. The RX5-E can be equipped for radiation therapy. Roxxi s small size and unique perspective make her a perfect partner in targeting tumors and individual cells with radiation. The task requires coordination with doctors on the outside using communication taps planted specifically to call for a radiation beam. REPORT TAP: This tap reports symptoms to the patient and doctors and may initiate treatment

15 Weapons Chemo Weapons CHEMO BLASTER: This is the default chemo weapon. Antibiotic Weapons BACTO BLASTER: This default antibiotic weapon fires a spread of medicine. UPGRADED CHEMO BLASTER: This upgraded chemo weapon fires rapid bursts. UPGRADED BACTO BLASTER: This upgraded antibiotic blaster fires faster, narrower, and farther. CHEMO ROCKETS: This chemo projectile explodes on impact and destroys more cells. ANTIBIOTIC ROCKETS: These explosive projectiles merge onto the target to damage multiple bacteria. UPGRADED CHEMO ROCKETS: More limited in number and speed, these rockets maximize chemo damage. UPGRADED ANTIBIOTIC ROCKETS: These upgraded rockets have wide and significant impact. CHEMO CACHE: These highly compressed canisters of chemo are strategically placed in some patients and triggered with a simple chemo blast. CHEMO PACK: These act like bombs that the RX5-E must plant at designated blast points. BACTO-MARKER: This ingenuous device tags bacteria with a chemical to coordinate attacks with white blood cells. Other Weapons STOOLSOFT GUN: This weapon applies stool softener to hardened stool jags. PAIN MED APPLICATOR: This weapon soothes sores with pain medication
