OFFICE HOURS PLACEMENT TEST: Freshmen and transfer students: If you have ever taken any high school French but have had no subsequent coursework in French at UIUC, you MUST take the French Placement Examination in order to be sure that you are placed in the correct course. The Placement Exam must be taken within the first ten days of the semester. You can arrange to take the exam by asking for an authorization form in the French Department Office (2090 FLB). Continuing students: If this is your first French class at UIUC and you have not taken the placement exam, you should contact your instructor to be sure that you are placed in the correct course. You may earn up to 1000 points over the course of the semester, based on your completion and performance on the required assignment of the course. 2 Unless your instructor gives you the authorization, late assignments will not be accepted and no assignments may be turned in outside of class. Furthermore, you must be present for the entire class period in order to turn in an assignment unless otherwise discussed with your TA. Please read the note on Academic Dishonesty very carefully: PREPARATION / HOMEWORK CHECKS: Your instructor may give frequent short quizzes and/or check all or part of your homework at the beginning of class to verify that you have prepared the assigned reading and/or material before coming to class. Please note that the pages assigned on a particular date are to be read ahead of class and you are to come to class with the workbook and lab manual pages, as noted on the syllabus, completed and checked in a different colored ink in order to receive full credit. HOMEWORK AND COMPOSITIONS: Your written assignments are listed on the course syllabus on the date they are due. Additional homework may also be assigned throughout the semester. Missed homework assignments will receive a grade of 0. WORKBOOK: Note that most exercises in the workbook and lab manual are self-correcting. In order to receive credit for the workbook, workbook assignments must be completely (all sections assigned must be done), and corrected in ink of another color ink. The number of mistakes you make does not influence your grade as long as you have corrected them. Please note that your instructor receives the right to deny credit for any or all workbook and/or lab manual assignments if he or she believes that the student has merely copied the answers out of the back of the workbook and/or not made a serious effort to complete the exercises correctly. Please ask for help if you do not understand any part of workbook or lab manual assignments. You will be required to complete oral activities for every chapter covered. The audio files to be used in conjunction with your workbook are available on the audio CDs provided with the textbook package. ATTENDANCE: Daily attendance in class is necessary and expected. If you have to miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out what material was covered during your absence. If you miss class and fail to provide any written documentation accounting for your absence from a third party, (for example: a doctor s note, a jury duty notice, etc.) you will NOT be allowed to turn in any work that was due in class on that day (you may not turn it in outside of class), and any assignments done in class (compositions, tests, quizzes) may not be made up. You will have 7 days from the time of the unexcused absence to provide documentation. TRAVEL PLANS: Please note that leaving early for vacations is NOT an acceptable excuse and no credit will be given for missed class days or assignments as the result of a student s travel plans. Please make any travel plans according to the official university academic calendar. INTERNET: Four of your regularly-scheduled class meetings will be taking place in the computer lab (see your syllabus for the dates/times of these meetings). During these lab meetings, you will be engaging in different internet activities including checking your understanding of French grammar through completing self-correcting exercises, and visiting selected areas of French Web space to gather information you will submit for a grade (e.g., sending your instructor an e-postcard from a French Website). Your instructor, in conjunction with the FR104 course coordinator, may choose to cancel any internet days and to hold class in the regular classroom. Any changes will be announced in class. TESTS/QUIZZES: The dates of all quizzes and tests (Unit Tests and Oral Exam) are included on the syllabus. ABSENCE FROM TESTS AND QUIZZES WILL BE EXCUSED ONLY IN THE PRESENCE OF DOCUMENTATION ATTESTING TO THE NATURE OF YOUR ABSENCE. INSTRUCTORS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO GIVE MAKE-UP TESTS OR QUIZZES. If you know ahead of time that you will have to miss a test, you must notify your instructor and make appropriate arrangements. The arrangements are at the discretion of your instructor. There will be ONE oral test at the end of the semester. This oral exam is given by appointment in your instructor s office. If you are unable to keep your appointment, you must notify your instructor IN ADVANCE and reschedule the interview. Missed appointments will be rescheduled at the instructor s discretion.

3 COMMUNICATION: Because a very important course goal in French 104 is the development of speaking and listening skills, a portion of your course grade will be based on your achievement in these areas. Oral tests will serve as the basis for evaluation of your performance, as will listening sections on Unit Tests. In order to benefit maximally from the course, you will need to listen to the audio files and practice seriously in both the laboratory, the classroom, and in other small-group conversational activities provided by your instructor. WRITING: You will also be given ample opportunity to improve your writing skills in French. Short compositions will be a part of each Unit Test. In addition, there are two compositions, with two versions each. Writing assignments are structured to emphasize grammatical and thematic materials found in your text. ACADEMIC HONESTY/CHEATING: Acceptable resources for preparing assignments in this course are limited to the following: course textbooks, dictionaries, and instructor-approved grammar references, as well as help from the instructor. Students may seek help from tutors and others outside of class to practice and improve their fluency in French. However, with the exception of help from the student's instructor and/or in-class activities, OUTSIDE ASSISTANCE IS NOT ALLOWED ON GRADED ASSIGNMENTS in this course and is considered cheating. These include: The consultation of tutors, friends, native speakers, etc. Any use of computer-assisted translators or online translating programs Use of a spell check / grammar check program As in all cases of cheating, if it is found or suspected that a student has used any outside assistance, the penalties, as outlined in the Code of Policies and Regulations Applying to All Students ( will include no credit for the assignment, and the possibility of a written notice of warning sent to the student with a copy to the student s file in the office of the college in which the student is enrolled and to the Senate Committee on Student Discipline. In severe cases, this may result in failure of the course and/or academic discipline. ABOUT THE USE OF TRANSLATION PROGRAMS: The use of computer or online translation programs is NOT permitted for writing assignments in this course and is considered cheating. Unlike dictionaries and grammar references, these programs simply provide ONE translation, rather than allowing you to choose among various words/tenses, etc. to come up with the best word or phrase on your own. Moreover, translation programs very often produce inaccurate, incorrect translations, and are easy to identify. Students will learn far more by doing their own work and will avoid risking serious academic consequences.
