1 LEÇON 34 Cultural Commentary Une leçon de conduite When the weather permits, French people enjoy washing and cleaning their cars, typically on the weekends. Jérôme s car is la Deux Chevaux (la 2 CV). The car was designed by Citroën in 1939 but was not marketed until after World War II ( ). The Deux Chevaux was first introduced at the Salon de l Automobile in The company stopped production on this model in 1988, but it is still a very popular used car with French young people. André Citroën ( ) was the founder of the privately-owned Citroën company. Other cars manufactured by the company are Peugeot and Talbot. In 1985, France ranked fourth in the world (after Japan, the United States and Germany) in the production of passenger cars. It ranked third (after Japan and the United States) in the manufacture of commercial vehicles. Jérôme s Deux Chevaux features a toit rabattable (sun roof). French law requires drivers and passengers to use seatbelts (une ceinture de sécurité). The two chevrons on Jérôme s keychain represent the Citroën company logo. Jérôme and Pierre are heading south towards Chavoire and Veyrier-du-Lac, small towns on the eastern shore of the lake.
