2 En ce moment de conclusion, de joie et de réalisation, je pense aux moments difficiles et confus qui ont aussi marqué le chemin jusqu ici. Je remercie sincèrement tous ceux qui étaient à mes cotés dans tout ce parcours, de manière particulière à Daniel Pinson, à mes parents et à mon mari Manuel. Je remercie aussi l architecte Joana Vieira da Silva qui a collaboré avec moi dans cette recherche en y apportant beaucoup, à l architecte Rogério Cavaca et aux familles qui m on ouvert la porte de leurs maisons. Je dédie ce travail et ces années de ma vie à Francisco, Maria Luísa et Duarte, mes enfants.

3 LES NON-DITS DE L ESPACE DOMESTIQUE Résumé Cette recherche sur l'espace domestique est conduite sur un ensemble de maisons individuelles en bande situées à la périphérie de Matosinhos, au Nord du Portugal. Ces maisons ont été bâties dans les années 80 à l'initiative de la coopérative d'habitation économique CHE "O Lar do Trabalhador" et à partir du projet d'architecture de l'architecte Rogério Cavaca. Le questionnement énoncé concerne la capacité de l'espace domestique à intégrer une diversité de situations familiales et sociales dans la durée. Il s'agit de comprendre comment l'espace de la maison peut être conçu comme un outil pour la construction familiale, en considérant l'inévitabilité de la standardisation des espaces en contexte urbain et en considérant l'inévitabilité de l'éclatement des pratiques dans un contexte d'une société individualisée (Singly, 2005) et plurielle (Lahire, 1998). Le travail de l enquête cherche à saisir la réalité des maisons étudiées à partir de différents instruments. Ainsi, les espaces domestiques ont été observés à travers une démarche particulière qui consiste en l utilisation combinée de l'analyse du discours des familles recueilli en entretien et de l'interprétation des espaces au moyen de leur représentation graphique et photographique, ce qu on désigne par une approche "ethno-architecturale" (Pinson, 1988; 1992). Deux dimensions ont étudiées. D'un coté, la capacité de la maison à répondre aujourd'hui à des besoins différents de ceux pour lesquels elle a été conçue, d'un autre, la capacité de la maison à répondre à la grande variété des besoins et des attentes des familles contemporaines. DIALOGUES Domestic space and families throughout time Abstract This research on domestic space is conducted on a group of row houses located at the periphery of Matosinhos, in the North of Portugal. These houses were built in the Eighties on the initiative of the economic cooperative of dwelling CHE O Lar do Trabalhador and by the project of the architect Rogério Cavaca. The stated questioning relates to the capacity of domestic space to integrate the diversity of families and social conditions during an interval of time. It is a question of understanding how the domestic space can be conceived like a tool for family construction, by considering the inevitability of spaces standardization in urban context and considering the inevitability of the diversity of the practices in a context of an individualized (Singly, 2005) and plural (Lahire, 1998) society. The field work seeks to seize the reality of the studied houses from various instruments. Thus, domestic spaces were observed through a particular method which consists on the combined use of the family speech analysis and the interpretation of spaces by means of their graphic and photographic survey, which indicates an ethno-architectural approach (Pinson, 1988; 1992).

4 Two dimensions are in study. On one side, the capacity of the domestic space to meet today different needs from those for which it was conceived, of another, the capacity of the house to meet the large variety of the needs and expectations of the contemporary families.
