2 Overview of IAGU IAGU is an international NGO specialized in research & development, technical support, training and information. Established in 1987, the Executive Secretariat of IAGU is based in Dakar, Senegal. Support the West and Central African municipalities and local authorities to extend their planning and management capacities in order to improve local governance, promote sustainable management of the environment and combat poverty. This mission is executed through IAGU s three (3) poles Partners IDRC, UN-Habitat, UNEP, UNDP, World Bank, RUAF Foundation, CIDA, FAO, European Union (EU), International Centre for Sustainable Cities (ICSC), BIOAZUL, CADAK/CAR, Municipalities and other institutions involved in urban management Poles - Strategic planning and environment This pole has for vocation to drive participative planning processes and to elaborate local plans of sustainable development. - Urban agriculture The charge of this pole is to improve the knowledge and to strengthen capacities to increase the contribution of urban agriculture for the sustainable development of African cities. - Waste The key mission of the waste pole is to support African cities in the implementation of sustainable and integrated waste management strategies. 3 Waste Pole As a leading institution in the management of hazardous and household solid wastes in western and central Africa, the Institut Africain de Gestion Urbaine (IAGU) capitalized a lot of experiences in this area during the last twenty years. The Waste Pole strengthens the capacities of municipalities and other institutions in charge of the management of wastes and puts at their disposal technical tools for sustainable management of these wastes. Specialized in research development, the key mission of the waste pole is to support African cities to implement sustainable waste management strategies promoting recovery. 4 Urban Agriculture Pole IAGU proceeded to the opening of an Urban Agriculture Office (IAGU-BAU) in early 2009 located in Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina Faso).The opening of this Office dedicated exclusively to urban agriculture is the renewed expression of the will and engagement of IAGU to anchor urban agricultural activities in the municipal development policies. The role of the Urban Agriculture Office of IAGU is to improve knowledge and reinforce capacities in order to increase the contribution of urban agriculture in the sustainable development of African cities. Activities Research and development according to a participative process for better clarifying the decision-making and thus operate relevant and concerted choices Implementation of Multi-Stakeholders Process for Policy Design and Action Planning (MPAP) in urban agriculture Training and capacitiy building of the various actors engaged in the promotion of urban agriculture Technical support and the monitoring of initiatives regarding urban agriculture Realization of feasibility studies and evaluation of socio-economic and environmental impacts of urban agriculture initiatives Mobilization and the continuous share of information through suitable channels Support to the installation of efficient urban producers organizations Initiatives Coordination of the activities of RUAF Foundation (Resource centre on Urban Agriculture and Food Security) in French-speaking West Africa Coordination of the implementation of the Initiative «From Seed to Table» (FStT) within the framework of the activities of RUAF Foundation. The FStT initiative targets Porto Novo (Benin) and Bobo Dioulasso (Burkina Faso) in French-speaking West Africa Coordination of the French-speaking Network for Urban Agriculture in Central and West Africa (RFAU/AOC). 5 Strategic Planning and Environment Pole By setting the Strategic Planning and Environment Pole in January 2009, IAGU seeks to capitalize experience gathered for over close to twenty years in the field of participatory strategic planning. IAGU conducted several planning processes, such as the Environmental Planning and Management Process (EPM) and the local Agendas 21 in several Senegalese and African cities, in general, as well as in extremely diverse areas of the urban field. The Pole aims to assist, support and strengthen the capacities of West and Central African municipalities in strategic planning, for sustainable urban management and the improvement of the populations living conditions. 7 Présentation générale de l IAGU L Institut Africain de Gestion Urbaine (IAGU) est une ONG internationale spécialisée dans la recherche-action, l appui technique, la formation et l information. Créé en 1987, l IAGU a son Secrétariat Exécutif basé à Dakar, Sénégal. Appuyer les municipalités et les villes de l Afrique de l Ouest et du Centre à renforcer leurs capacités de planification et de gestion pour améliorer la gouvernance locale, promouvoir une gestion durable de l environnement et lutter contre la pauvreté. Cette mission est assurée par les trois (3) pôles de l IAGU Partenaires CRDI, UN-Habitat, PNUE, PNUD, Banque Mondiale, Fondation RUAF, ACDI, FAO, Union Européenne (UE), Centre International des Villes Durables (CIVD ), BIOAZUL, Entente CADAK/CAR, Municipalités et autres institutions intervenant dans la gestion urbaine Pôles - Planification stratégique et environnement Ce pôle a pour vocation la conduite de processus participatifs de planification et l élaboration de plans locaux de développement. - Agriculture urbaine Ce pôle a pour mission d améliorer les connaissances et de renforcer les capacités en vue d accroître la contribution de l agriculture urbaine au développement durable des villes africaines. - Déchets La principale mission du pôle déchet est d accompagner les villes africaines dans la mise en place de stratégies durables de gestion intégrée des déchets. 8 Pôle Déchet Institut leader dans la gestion des déchets dangereux et des déchets solides ménagers en Afrique de l Ouest et du Centre, l Institut Africain de Gestion Urbaine a capitalisé une expérience solide dans ce domaine au cours des vingt dernières années. Le Pôle Déchet renforce les capacités des municipalités et autres institutions en charge de la gestion des déchets et met à leur disposition des outils techniques pour une gestion durable de ces déchets. Spécialisé dans la recherche développement, la principale mission du pôle déchet est d accompagner les villes africaines dans la mise en place de stratégies durables de gestion des déchets favorisant la valorisation. 9 Pôle Agriculture Urbaine L IAGU a procédé au début de l année 2009 à l ouverture d un Bureau Agriculture Urbaine (IAGU-BAU) basé à Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina Faso). L ouverture de cette entité exclusivement dédiée à l agriculture urbaine est l expression renouvelée de la volonté et de l engagement de l IAGU à œuvrer pour ancrer les activités agricoles urbaines dans les politiques municipales de développement. L IAGU-BAU a pour mission d améliorer les connaissances et de renforcer les capacités en vue d accroître la contribution de l agriculture urbaine au développement durable des villes africaines. 10 Pôle Planification Stratégique et Environnement Le Pôle Planification Stratégique et Environnement a été créé en janvier L Institut Africain de Gestion Urbaine (IAGU) ambitionne ainsi de capitaliser une expérience d une vingtaine d années dans le domaine de la planification stratégique participative, à travers la conduite de Processus de Planification et de Gestion de l Environnement (PGE) et d Agendas 21 locaux dans plusieurs villes sénégalaises et africaines en général. La mission du Pôle Planification Stratégique et Environnement est principalement d assister, d accompagner et de renforcer les capacités des municipalités d Afrique de l Ouest et du Centre dans la planification stratégique en vue d une gestion urbaine durable et d une amélioration des conditions de vie des populations.
