5 #BEGEO A geospatial society in the making A recent United Nations study, the United Nations Initiative on Global Geospatial Information Management, has once again unmistakably hit it home: the use of geospatial information is on the rise. There is a growing awareness that pertinent location data are a vital element of the decisionmaking process. Many technological breakthroughs will have a huge impact in coming years. At the same time, the amount of data with a location component is growing rapidly and the number of potential applications for such data is constantly increasing. We must not underestimate the direct and indirect economic impact of geo services. The consultancy firm OXERA recently calculated that the use of GPS can cut time spent travelling by 1.1 billion hours every year. Belgium s strong GEO-ICT sector is ready to offer services with considerable added value. According to recent statistics from Agoria, GEO-ICT companies (of which there are currently around 70) have created over 2,000 high-value jobs and generate an annual turnover of 304 million. Er is een groeiend besef dat relevante locatiegegevens een essentiële component vormen van het besluitvormingsproces. Heel wat technologische doorbraken zullen in de komende jaren een grote impact hebben. Tegelijk neemt de hoeveelheid gegevens met een locatiecomponent hand over hand toe en worden de mogelijke toepassingen steeds talrijker. De directe en indirecte economische impact van GEO-diensten is niet te onderschatten. OXERA consultancybureau heeft onlangs berekend dat dankzij het gebruik van GPS jaarlijks 1,1 miljard reisuren kan worden bespaard. In België staat een sterke GEO-ICT sector klaar om u diensten met hoge toegevoegde waarde te bieden. Volgens recente cijfers van Agoria hebben de GEO-ICT bedrijven een 70-tal op dit ogenblik - meer dan 2000 hoogwaardige jobs gecreëerd en realiseren ze een jaarlijkse omzet van 304 miljoen.
